"His Majesty summoned you?" Ye Xiaohan asked in surprise. "Why so soon? You've just revealed your identity as the Flying Dragon General, and the Emperor is far away in the capital. How could he know about your reappearance so quickly?"
In ancient times, communication and transportation were not as swift as they are today. There were no phones or video calls; it took a considerable amount of time for messages to travel back and forth.
Gu Bei frowned and pondered, "I'm afraid someone couldn't wait any longer and is eager to take action."
Ye Xiaohan realized the gravity of the situation. "Could it be Liu Yuan? I initially thought he was behind this, but he's just the son of a county magistrate. How could he easily connect with important missions from the capital?"
"It seems Liu Yuan's background is more profound than we imagined." If it truly was Liu Yuan, then he must have ties with certain individuals in the capital.
There were many things to consider, but Gu Bei had little time to spare; he needed to reach the capital as soon as possible.
"The Emperor's command is difficult to refuse. I must leave now; I entrust everything at home to you. I'm only going to report back, and once everything is settled, I'll return as quickly as I can." Gu Bei handed over the responsibility of their family to Ye Xiaohan. Only by entrusting her could he feel at ease.
Ye Xiaohan accepted without hesitation. If Gu Bei had entrusted her with this task instead of someone else, she would have truly been upset.
Gu Bei gave Ye Xiaohan a deep look before turning to leave. He went on to remind Liu Yang and Liu Qi a few more things, and under the urging of the officials sent from the capital, he hurriedly joined the convoy heading towards the capital.
Liu Yang held Liu Qi's hand outside the city gate, watching the convoy disappear into the distance until it was out of sight.
"Second Brother, will Big Brother come back? He wouldn't lie to us, right?" Liu Qi asked reluctantly, gazing longingly at the spot where the convoy had vanished.
Liu Yang grasped her warm little hand firmly and assured her, "He will definitely come back. Big Brother won't abandon us. Until he returns, Second Brother will take care of you; you don’t need to worry about anything."
"Mm!" Liu Qi nodded. "I can still go play with Sister-in-law and Round; I'm not sad at all."
Liu Yang patted her head affectionately. "Good girl!"
After seeing Gu Bei off, Liu Yang and Liu Qi didn't head straight home but instead went to Dayue Lai Inn.
"Sister-in-law, my brother has already left. You don't need to keep pretending anymore; it's better for you to go home early," Liu Yang said as he noticed Liu Qi clinging to Ye Xiaohan as soon as they entered. He thought his sister was quite clever.
Ye Xiaohan glanced at him. "He's with you? Really, why bother with a child so much?"
"I'm not a child anymore!" The thing that Yang hated the most was that Ye Xiaohan never treated him like an adult. He didn't realize that constantly shouting about his maturity was, in itself, a childish behavior.
Ye Xiaohan casually replied, "Alright, alright, you're an adult now. Adult Yang, help me pack up; we're going home."
She deliberately made a scene to show others. Now that Gu Bei was not around, there was no need to continue the act. With a few elderly and weak people at home, she couldn't feel at ease; it was better to move back.
"Great!" Yang cheered and helped pack up with excitement, eager to finish quickly so his sister-in-law could return home sooner.
The group returned to the Yang family. Ye Xiaohan worried that those people might still be watching, so she informed the Yang family in advance. They all put on an act of having 'argued but reluctantly made up while still not getting along well.'
Aside from Li Yi feeling concerned about this situation, the others seemed to have found something amusing and were enjoying themselves.
In fact, Ye Xiaohan's suspicion was correct; there were indeed people hiding in the shadows. Late at night, after everyone in the Yang family had gone to sleep, several figures moved stealthily across the rooftop before disappearing into the night.
The figures nimbly landed outside a familiar courtyard, skillfully climbing over the wall and knocking on a window of one of the rooms.
"Come in." The voice from inside was also familiar; sitting under the oil lamp was clearly Liu Yuan.
As the figure stepped into the light, it became apparent that he was wearing a uniform night outfit—one of Liu Yuan's Shadow Guards.
"Reporting to you, Young Master, Ye Xiaohan has returned to the Yang family," the Shadow Guard knelt on one knee and reported the information he had gathered.
Liu Yuan's grip on his brush tightened noticeably. He paused for a moment before putting it down.
"Hmph! That bitch knows Gu Bei is a general and still wants to get close; how shameless!" Liu Yuan gritted his teeth and cursed. "It's a pity she won't have much time to daydream; once Gu Bei arrives in the imperial city, there will be a good show to watch!"
Seeing their master so angry, the Shadow Guard quickly flattered him. "It's all thanks to your wisdom and bravery, Young Master; you sent an urgent letter to the imperial city right away, forcing Gu Bei to leave in haste."
It turned out that the letter sent by Liu Yuan's Shadow Guard was actually a secret report delivered to the imperial city.
It seemed that Gu Bei's concerns were not unfounded; Liu Yuan indeed had some close connections with certain individuals in the imperial city. Being able to present a letter directly to the emperor was not something just anyone could accomplish.
Even officials in the Court had to follow protocol, yet he managed to bypass these rules and inform the emperor through some channel.
"Am I really going to let them be so arrogant in front of me?" Liu Yuan thought about how Gu Bei and Ye Xiaohan were so close, while he felt trampled underfoot, and his anger surged within him.
This alone was far from enough; his fury could not be quelled simply by separating them.
"Keep an eye on them. Report any changes immediately," Liu Yuan thought of a venomous snake lurking in his heart, now fixated on Ye Xiaohan, waiting for an opportunity to strike.
"Rest assured, my lord. I will handle this without fail," the Shadow Guard replied obsequiously, though his face was obscured, making it impossible to discern his expression, which sounded somewhat comical.
Liu Yuan waved his hand dismissively. "Go on, and you know what happens if you mess this up."
The Shadow Guard dared not say another word and quickly vanished outside.
Inside the room, Liu Yuan was lost in thought, alternating between a sinister smile and a face full of rage. After a moment, he picked up a brush and began to write furiously.
It wasn't until the sound of the night watchman echoed from deep within the alley that the figure at the window finally paused and set down what they had been holding.
Pushing open the study door, Liu Yuan gazed at the starry sky and suddenly let out a cold laugh before leaving.
The oil lamp continued to burn steadily, but there were no voices around.
Gu Bei had gone to the imperial city, while Ye Xiaohan stayed at home for a few days. Feeling that she couldn't waste any more time, she decided it was essential to seize the moment. With future uncertainties looming, it was better to earn as much as possible while she still could.
She had been observing that this town was relatively prosperous, with a strong economy and high consumer spending power; doing business here seemed quite feasible.
Now, the question is where to start.
Ye Xiaohan took a stroll and, with her business acumen and modern ideas, came up with some preliminary thoughts.
However, she was merely theorizing without any practical experience. Implementing these ideas would still be quite challenging.
At times like this, it was essential to gather everyone's opinions. More people meant more ideas.
She called in Li Yi and 6 Yang. Two others trailed behind them as the family closed the door and began their discussion.
"With that said, I would like to hear everyone's opinions on what kind of business we should pursue," Ye Xiaohan stated, waiting for their suggestions.
6 Yang raised his hand and, before Ye Xiaohan could call on him, eagerly said, "I think we should stick to our original plan and open a skincare store. This was the first idea proposed by my sister-in-law, and no other stores have it. If we offer something unique, our business will surely thrive."
Aside from these objective advantages, he felt a lingering regret over the forced closure of Peach Blossom Studio and had been thinking about making a comeback.
Ye Xiaohan understood his intentions and couldn't help but smile; he was still just a child, sometimes too stubborn. Only children would distinguish right from wrong; adults focused on benefits.
To avoid discouraging him, Ye Xiaohan refrained from directly countering his suggestion and wrote it down on paper.
Then she turned to Li Yi and asked, "Uncle Li, what are your thoughts?"
Li Yi pondered for a moment before responding, "I have a somewhat different perspective."
