Ye Xiaohan had been running alongside Liu Yang for quite a while before they finally managed to catch a bullock cart to the town. It was truly inconvenient to be in ancient times without cars.
Liu Yang was familiar with the town and after asking a few people, he found the apothecary shop.
There were still quite a few people gathered outside. Upon arriving at this place, Ye Xiaohan felt a sense of calm wash over her.
Liu Yang pushed his way inside, while Ye Xiaohan followed slowly behind him.
Once they entered the apothecary, it was a chaotic scene. Four or five burly men surrounded the shop, and in the corner stood Liu Bei, brandishing a large stick and glaring angrily at everyone. The blood on his face had already dried, indicating that both sides had been at a stalemate for quite some time.
Seeing her older brother in such a state made Liu Yang feel anxious and he called out, "Big Brother, are you alright?"
Liu Bei first noticed Liu Yang, then spotted Ye Xiaohan behind him and immediately shouted, "Liu Yang, what are you doing bringing your wife here? Hurry back! I can handle this myself."
The apothecary's boss saw that they had brought two more people and became furious. He shouted at his assistant, "Get these two accomplices and send them all to the government office!"
Hearing that they were going to take Liu Yang and Ye Xiaohan away, Liu Bei rushed out to stand in front of them, ready to fight if necessary.
Ye Xiaohan patted Liu Bei's shoulder, signaling him to relax. "What’s going on? Didn’t you come here to sell the ganoderma?"
"Xiao Han, I did come to sell the ganoderma, but I didn’t expect this boss to swindle me and refuse to pay."
Before Liu Bei could finish explaining, the boss jumped out angrily and said, "Nonsense! You’re just a country bumpkin; how could you have ganoderma? You clearly want to use your mushrooms to swindle our shop. I’ll make sure you meet the officials."
Seeing Liu Bei’s anxious expression as he tried to explain, Ye Xiaohan realized that this was indeed a trick played by the shopkeeper. It seemed Liu Bei had encountered a black market today.
Ye Xiaohan quietly approached Liu Bei and whispered, "Leave it to me; no one can take what belongs to us."
Liu Bei, who had been agitated, felt somewhat reassured by Ye Xiaohan’s words and nodded obediently.
Ye Xiaohan walked up to the shopkeeper and asked, "Boss, let me ask you something. Did you receive mushrooms from Liu Bei instead of the Lingzhi? Would you be willing to show me the mushrooms?"
The shopkeeper sized up Ye Xiaohan with disdain, noting her plump figure and unattractive appearance. He replied loudly, "Of course! Show me!"
Ye Xiaohan took the item handed to her by the shop assistant. It was indeed the bag she used for the Lingzhi, but inside it was no longer Lingzhi; instead, there was a mushroom.
Understanding the situation, Ye Xiaohan returned the item to the shopkeeper and asked seriously, "Boss, let me ask you one more thing. Are you sure Liu Bei didn't bring Lingzhi to sell here but instead replaced it with mushrooms?"
The shopkeeper, full of arrogance, showed no sign of compromise. "Naturally! I am the esteemed Shopkeeper of Ciji Hall. How could I possibly deceive a country bumpkin like you?"
"Alright, let's consider this our mistake today. Liu Yang, come over and give this Shopkeeper a couple of taels of silver as compensation. We'll let this matter go."
Liu Yang looked at Ye Xiaohan in disbelief. He had expected her to have some clever plan, but instead, she was suggesting they pay.
As he hesitated, Ye Xiaohan raised her voice, prompting Liu Yang to reluctantly hand over the money.
Liu Bei was visibly dissatisfied and wanted to resist. Ye Xiaohan stepped forward, grasped his hand gently, and squeezed it lightly.
The previously irritable Liu Bei instantly softened under his wife's tender touch.
The shopkeeper weighed the silver in his hand, looking quite pleased with himself as he watched them.
Just as Ye Xiaohan pulled Liu Bei toward the door of the shop, she suddenly stopped and turned back casually. "Oh right, I almost forgot something. I did indeed find a thirty-year-old Lingzhi yesterday. To prevent anyone from stealing it, I coated it with a deadly poison. Anyone who touches that poison will rot and die within three days. The poison is colorless and odorless; however, if someone licks their tongue where they touched the Lingzhi, they will become paralyzed all over. Liu Bei, do you think the person who stole your Lingzhi will die a terrible death?"
Liu Bei was bewildered by her words and quickly asked, "Xiao Han, what should I do? I touched it too; I won't die as well, will I?"
Ye Xiaohan smiled confidently and said, "Don't worry. Since I applied the poison myself, I naturally have an antidote. However, only I can provide it."
As they were conversing, a figure in the corner stealthily reached out and licked his hand. Suddenly, his expression changed drastically. All of this was witnessed by Ye Xiaohan, who coldly turned around and left with Liu Bei.
This time, however, it was they who were stopped. The figure from the corner suddenly rushed out, collapsing to the ground. He clutched at Ye Xiaohan's pant leg with one hand, mumbling incoherently, "Help, help, help me!"
Before he could finish his words, a large amount of saliva leaked from his mouth.
Ye Xiaohan quickly jumped back to avoid getting splashed. She shouted at the man, "I'm not a doctor; your Shopkeeper is the one who should help you. Call your Shopkeeper for assistance!"
The man desperately lunged forward, but fortunately, Liu Bei blocked him for Ye Xiaohan.
Ye Xiaohan looked up and met the gaze of the Shop Owner, who was trembling uncontrollably, beads of sweat forming on his forehead. Ye Xiaohan suppressed a laugh and maintained a calm expression. "Boss, I see your employee is seriously ill; you should hurry and treat him. Otherwise, if he dies, you'll be in big trouble."
At this point, the shop's Boss completely crumbled.
He hurried forward, pleading with Ye Xiaohan, "Heroine, please spare us! I beg you to save me and this man!"
"Boss, don't be like that. What can I do to save you? If your medical skills are lacking, you should quickly call for a doctor."
Liu Yang watched Ye Xiaohan and noticed the smug look on her face; he realized this situation was entirely her doing. Understanding dawned on him as he obediently stood behind his brother to watch the spectacle.
Hearing Ye Xiaohan's urgency, the Boss began slapping himself while apologizing. "It’s my fault; I was greedy and stole your spirit herb. I hope the heroine can forgive me and provide us with an antidote."
Finally speaking up about the situation caused an uproar among those present. In the corner, a Mysterious Robed Young Master wore an increasingly delighted expression as he fixed his intense gaze on Ye Xiaohan.
"No, we’ll pay for the damages. We’ve been beaten as well; it seems that spirit herb isn’t anything good. We don’t want it anymore. Whoever wishes to take it and risk their life for it can have it."
As she spoke, Ye Xiaohan began to pull Liu Bei away.
The shop owner immediately knelt down, pleading with Ye Xiaohan, "Heroine, we were wrong. I will return your money, tenfold. I will also give you the money for the ganoderma. Please spare our lives."
Having achieved her goal, and not wanting to prolong the situation in front of so many onlookers, Ye Xiaohan replied to the Boss, "I can't trust your words. Who knows if you might deceive me?"
The shop Boss was a clever man; upon hearing Ye Xiaohan's words, he understood her meaning and quickly instructed someone to fetch the money.
"Heroine, here are twenty-five taels of silver for the ganoderma, and another ten taels as compensation for the medical expenses of this brother I injured. Lastly, I will return this one tael as well. I beg you, spare our lives."
Ye Xiaohan looked at the gleaming silver, her heart racing with excitement. She feigned calmness and handed the silver to Yang, instructing the Boss, "Alright, since you are so sincere, as long as you are willing to write me a letter as proof and sign it, I will give you the antidote."
The shop Boss dared not resist; he nodded vigorously and hurried off to write.
He finished writing before it even dried and brought it straight to Ye Xiaohan.
Ye Xiaohan glanced at it and chuckled lightly, "Boss, just wash your hands that touched the ganoderma with hot water. As for your assistant, three cups of hot tea will do him no harm. And regarding the ganoderma, just wrap it in glutinous rice flour for a day and it can be sold again. I merely applied a bit of numbing herbal juice on it."
Realizing he had been tricked, the Boss wore a bitter expression but had no choice but to comply.
Ye Xiaohan triumphantly left with the two brothers from the Liu family, leaving behind a crowd buzzing with excitement over the incident.
In a corner, the Mysterious Robed Young Master slowly stepped out and instructed his servant beside him, "Go take care of what I asked you to do."
