Chapter 3: Reeds and Rushes
People continued to enter the conference room in waves, and the interviews lasted for over two hours.
Zhou Xuanyu stepped out once but did not return. As a new official, he needed to let the employees see his integration into the company, which meant getting involved in these details. This was part of Zhou Group's corporate culture, a "rule" that his elder brother had repeatedly emphasized.
“Knock, knock!” The office door was rapped upon.
He set down the coffee cup in his hand and glanced back. “Come in.”
The door opened, and Galen walked in.
Galen was the Human Resources Manager and Assistant to the President at Hengfu Group. He had been diligent in his work for ten years and was well-trusted and liked by the previous president, Zhou Xuan Yong.
“Mr. Zhou. The interviews have concluded.”
Zhou Xuanyu nodded. “How did it go? Were there any candidates that caught Manager Gao's eye?”
Galen looked anxious. “Mr. Zhou, you jest; that question should be directed at you.”
Zhou Xuanyu took a sip of coffee and remained silent. The office was quiet, and as he shifted slightly, he could still hear that gentle English phrase echoing in his ears.
"On a hill is a tree, on a tree are boughs. My heart for the lord, but he never knows."
The Mountain Has Trees No branches, Junxi You do not know...
"Mr. Zhou, I have a question for you," Galen suddenly spoke up.
"Ask."
"Do you know the girl named Wen Junxi?"
Zhou Xuanyu frowned.
Galen felt anxious again and quickly stopped himself from pursuing the topic further. "I was just asking casually; it's fine if you don't want to answer."
Yes, she was just curious. Among so many candidates interviewed earlier, Zhou Xuanyu had not paid attention to anyone except that girl who posed a challenge after introducing herself.
Asking someone to translate an ancient poem into English had already exceeded their set difficulty limit. Fortunately, that girl had a solid foundation in English and was quick-witted.
When her fluent English flowed slowly from her rosy lips, the air in the conference room seemed to freeze. Her enunciation was clear yet not stiff, her tone resonant yet tinged with a hint of gentleness...
Galen intended to hire that girl, but before that, she needed to clarify whether the challenge posed by the president was indeed meant to be difficult. No matter how much she admired Wen Junxi, she could not let her personal preferences overshadow her responsibilities to her superior.
"Whether I know her or not does not affect the outcome of the interview."
Zhou Xuanyu turned away, gazing out at the towering buildings outside, his voice calm and unruffled.
Galen let out a sigh of relief.
"I understand. Then I will report on the admission matters after the personnel decisions are made."
"No need to report. You decide."
"Understood. If there's nothing else, I'll take my leave."
As Galen spoke, she began to retreat toward the door, but suddenly remembered something.
"Mr. Zhou, today is Zhou Ziyan's birthday. He borrowed your Yatian villa for his birthday party. I've already sent the gift you mentioned. I was wondering if you would like to attend this evening? If so, I can move tonight's meeting to tomorrow morning..."
"Move it."
"Yes."
