You Were Born a Nobleman, Chapter 29: The Bird with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
Softy's eyes widened in disbelief as she shook her head, "What are you talking about? Ahei wouldn't kill livestock; it never eats blood. Shu Que Wu Pan."
Aunt Mi's plump finger jabbed harder into Softy's tender skin as she retorted, "Wolves don't eat live prey. Who are you trying to fool? It didn't even leave any bones behind."
The villagers behind Aunt Mi, all hunters by trade and quite fierce, had already grabbed their weapons and moved forward to confront Lang Ye.
Softy pushed Aunt Mi away with all her might and rushed to stand in front of Lang Ye. "Please don't hurt it! It's a very obedient dog; I can guarantee it has done nothing wrong."
Lang Ye nimbly leaped out from behind Softy, his wolf eyes gleaming as he looked at the crowd. "Softy, step back. With these fools, I could take them down in no time."
Watching Lang Ye's fur bristle and hearing the low growl rumbling in his throat made Softy anxious; she feared for both Lang Ye's safety and the villagers' safety, sweat rolling down her forehead.
"Stop it! What are you all doing?" Tang Zisu and Kong Xuan shouted in unison.
Seeing her saviors, Softy immediately burst into tears. "High Priestess, they want to kill Ahei!"
Tang Zisu cleared her throat and tried to appear cool. "You’re making such a ruckus in the Shrine; aren't you afraid of divine retribution?"
Upon seeing Tang Zisu, Aunt Mi naturally quieted down significantly. She pointed at Lang Ye and said, "High Priestess, this wolf sneaked into over a dozen households last night and ate all the chickens, ducks, dogs, pigs, and livestock. If we don't get rid of it soon, it will start attacking people."
Tang Zisu turned to look at Softy, feeling a lingering fear of Lang Ye, unsure if it was indeed responsible for the situation.
Kong Xuan noticed Tang Zisu's hesitation and asked, "Did you see it with your own eyes?"
Aunt Mi hesitated slightly, saying, "Not exactly, but apart from it, where would the fierce beasts come from in our valley?"
"How could there be none? You are already in the mountain valley; the Peacock Mountain Forest is deep and high. How could there not be fierce beasts?"
Lang Ye proudly lifted its head, and Kong Xuan thought, finally, this bird has said something sensible!
A hunter nearby remarked, "Our family has lived here for several hundred years. There is a barrier set by Buddha outside the village; fierce beasts cannot reach the village. This is the first time such an incident has occurred."
Kong Xuan frowned as he looked at Lang Ye, deep in thought. After a moment, he said, "Everyone, although I just arrived in the village, I assure you that this matter was definitely not caused by Ahei. Why don't you take us to have a look? It will provide everyone with an explanation."
Kong Xuan's words seemed to carry an irresistible charm; the villagers lowered their heads and dared not speak loudly. Standing tall and elegant, Kong Xuan continued in a clear voice, "As the saying goes, when hitting a dog, one must look at its owner. Since Ahei is raised by the High Priestess, you should give it a chance to prove its innocence. Rest assured, if it truly was Ahei who did this, the High Priestess will never let it go!"
The villagers exchanged glances and eventually nodded in agreement. Tang Zisu watched Kong Xuan being surrounded by the crowd and couldn't help but furrow her brow. "This Kong Xuan is impressive; he seems to possess an innate regal demeanor that makes one want to kneel and worship him."
Kong Xuan turned back and called out to Tang Zisu, "Tang Zisu, what are you dawdling for? Hurry up!"
Tang Zisu snapped back to reality and replied, bringing Softy and Lang Ye along as they followed him.
Upon arriving at a farmer's house, Kong Xuan did not enter the courtyard. Instead, he found a shaded spot to stand and signaled Lang Ye to go check it out.
Lang Ye shot him a fierce glare. Damn it, the cleanliness-obsessed Birdman couldn't take it.
