"Yet, why is it that you are the one who isn't poisoned?"
Shen Muhan's every word pierced Xia Muxin's heart like sharp thorns. She was in so much pain that she had lost all feeling, but at this moment, she threw her head back and laughed.
"Shen Muhan, you suspect me."
This was the first time she had called him by his full name since they met. Shen Muhan's gaze narrowed, forcing himself to remain calm as he said coldly:
"Is there still a need for suspicion?"
Indeed, was there still a need for suspicion? Everyone who had eaten this meal, including Shen Muhan, had been poisoned, yet Xia Muxin was the only one unaffected. Wasn't that the best reason?
A faint smile lingered on Xia Muxin's lips, but tears blurred her vision. She could hardly see anything in front of her and couldn't reconcile this man with the uncle she once knew.
Suddenly, she grabbed the bowl that Ouyang Xuan had just used and quickly shoveled in a few mouthfuls of unfinished rice. Shen Muhan watched in horror as this scene unfolded, his voice caught in his throat.
Bang...
Xia Muxin forcefully set down the bowl and coldly stared at Shen Muhan. Suddenly, her brow furrowed as she placed a hand on her abdomen and forced out:
"Are you satisfied now?"
As she spoke, she began to walk away with great difficulty under Shen Muhan's gaze. Ouyang Xuan gritted his teeth and glared at Shen Muhan before grabbing a stick to support himself as he hurried after Xia Muxin.
"Is the show over yet?"
Shen Muhan closed his eyes heavily, waiting until Xia Muxin's figure disappeared from sight before he forcefully pushed the person in his arms away, speaking coldly.
However, the person he pushed did not fall to the ground. Instead, with a swift movement, the frail Qingyue transformed into Ming Lie, whose face was twisted into a sinister smile.
At that moment, several Phantoms appeared, each wielding weapons and glaring menacingly, as if they intended to tear Shen Muhan to pieces.
"Shen Muhan, oh Shen Muhan, your heroic life has been ruined by a woman. Hahaha, just think about it: not only did you abandon her, but you also killed her family. Even if I don't kill you today, can you live peacefully after this?"
"Ming Lie, this is a grudge between us; do not involve outsiders. Besides, the outcome is still uncertain. Who knows who will laugh last?"
Ming Lie, cunning as you are, this time you have touched my bottom line. Today, even if I exhaust my life’s cultivation, I will ensure your death here.
"Hahaha... Shen Muhan, what does it matter if you win? Everyone in Daimiao Village saw you kill Xia Muxin's family."
Ming Lie laughed wildly as a surge of black mist enveloped him. He rose into the air, his cold eyes filled with green threads. His neck twisted around suddenly, and with a swift motion, he struck towards Shen Muhan. With a loud crash, tables and chairs shattered, creating a large pit in the ground. Looking down at Shen Muhan's flying figure from above, he spoke coldly.
"Shen Muhan, if it weren't for you, Qingyue would have long been mine. Her blood is precious; it could help me master divine skills. Without you, I would have already been the ruler of this world instead of living daily in this dark and filthy realm. Only when you are dead can there be peace in this world."
The surrounding black smoke billowed ominously; this smoke was toxic. Ming Yi and the others had already neutralized the poison when Xia Muxin left; now they were nowhere to be found.
Shen Muhan merely drew his sword from his waist and flew far away. At that moment, he gazed at the large pit from a distance, his eyes momentarily frozen in shock. In just a few months' time, Ming Lie's power had increased by half, while he felt no confidence in defeating him.
"Ming Lie, do you dare to practice forbidden techniques? I just saw the green threads densely filling your eyes; have you fallen into madness?"
The martial arts he practiced were indeed forbidden techniques that had been sealed by his master and never revealed until death. Yet Ming Lie was now using moves from those very forbidden techniques. Moreover, such techniques could lead to self-destruction; the only antidote was Qingyue's blood because it contained a secret medicine personally concocted by his master. Drinking it would render one unable to bear children for life.
Qingyue was unaware of everything, and so was Ming Lie. The only ones who knew were him and Qing Ran, which was why Qing Zhan rejected the woman he cherished.
He believed that Qingyue's sacrifice was the greatest. Even if she could not bear children, at the very least, she should be with the person she loved. During his last battle with Ming Lie, his life had been at stake, and it was Qing Zhan who secretly took Qingyue's blood for him.
Thus, he felt a deep sense of debt towards Qingyue.
Beyond romantic feelings, he would do anything to pamper and cherish her because, in his heart, they had always been his closest kin.
“Hahahaha...”
Upon hearing this, Ming Lie suddenly threw his head back and laughed. A black vortex appeared in the palm of his hand, growing larger under his power. In an instant, a Phantoms was drawn into this vortex and pulled toward his palm. Shen Muhan even saw the Phantoms' eyes widen in terror, but before it could struggle, Ming Lie's head appeared at its neck. With a sinister grin revealing his fangs, Ming Lie bit down hard on the Phantoms' neck. Black smoke billowed as the ground trembled violently; the massive black vortex engulfed the entire manor, and within moments, the Phantoms became a lifeless corpse right before Shen Muhan's eyes.
Shen Muhan gathered his energy and soared into the air, surrounding himself with white mist to counter the approaching black smoke.
A chilling wind swept through the area as countless icicles flew like sharp swords in all directions. The black smoke around Ming Lie formed into dark blades that collided with the white icicles in midair, creating sparks that lit up the surroundings with blinding cold light.
Not long after leaving the manor, Xia Muxin and Ouyang Xuan suddenly felt their stomachs no longer hurt; their bodies were filled with warmth but felt particularly cold.
“Miss Muxin, are you cold?”
Ouyang Xuan rubbed his hands together and bounced on the spot a few times. Feeling that his stomach pain had subsided, he exhaled and asked Xia Muxin.
Xia Muxin paused for a moment, glanced at him, then continued on her way.
“Miss Muxin, um... I understand how you feel, but in this vast world, he is not the only one suitable for you. You can broaden your horizons; perhaps you will find someone more fitting.”
Seeing her gloomy face, Ouyang Xuan pressed his lips together, a hint of complexity flashing in his eyes. He stepped forward to stand beside her and spoke softly.
Xia Muxin still ignored him; her mind was a chaotic mess, completely muddled. Yet, fragments of every moment spent at the villa flashed before her eyes. Suddenly, she exclaimed, "No."
Her sudden outburst startled Ouyang Xuan, but he saw Xia Muxin already turning to look toward the mountain peak.
"Ouyang Xuan, don't you have martial arts? Take me to the top of the tree."
However, the entire mountain was undulating, with dense trees and flourishing branches reaching up to the clouds. Given Xia Muxin's small stature, she couldn't see anything at all. Anxiously, she tugged at Ouyang Xuan's sleeve, her expression serious as she said in a low voice.
A strange glint flickered in Ouyang Xuan's eyes as he lightly acknowledged her request. He wrapped one arm around Xia Muxin's slender waist and, with a push of energy from his toes, soared toward the nearest treetop with her.
"I asked you to take me to the top of the tree, not to hold me around the waist."
His intimate gesture caught Xia Muxin off guard. Once they landed on the treetop, she pinched his waist hard and scolded him in a low voice.
Then she pushed aside some branches that obstructed her view and gazed directly at the mountain peak. What she saw left her stunned.
Atop the mountain, two contrasting streams of energy clashed like currents, chasing each other. Each collision sparked dazzling flashes of light accompanied by explosive sounds that echoed clearly even from their distance.
Suddenly, there was movement below the tree. Xia Muxin looked down and saw Ming Yi fighting against the black Phantoms alongside the brothers from earlier while retreating.
Were they coming to protect her?
Xia Muxin felt a tightness in her heart, cursing Shen Muhan silently. Before she could even speak, a cold blade grazed her neck.
Following the glint of the sword, she saw Rong Li standing there with a wicked smile, gazing at her meaningfully.
Out of the corner of her eye, Xia Muxin noticed that Ouyang Xuan also had a knife at his throat, but his was a steel blade, and it left a red mark on Bai Xi's neck that was even more pronounced than hers.
"Min..."
Xia Muxin took several deep breaths. Her memories of Rong Li were limited to the time they had worked together to seize Python Brother, and she had dismissed him then. She couldn't believe he would come for revenge over such a trivial matter.
"It's simple. I've heard that Miss Muxin can create different types of explosives. I personally invite you this time and hope you won't disappoint my goodwill."
Rong Li's handsome face was close enough to see clearly, and his deep, hoarse voice echoed in Xia Muxin's ears. His thin lips seemed to unintentionally brush against her earlobe, while his palm revealed a heart knot.
Xia Muxin inhaled deeply, her anger flaring up. That heart knot was something she had made for Songzi when he went to school, with a blue thread woven into the shape of Songzi in the center. He had been so delighted with it.
Every time he came home, he would say he wore it to bed and couldn't bear to take it off.
Xia Muxin's pupils constricted inexplicably, and the urge to cry out faded away naturally. She glared coldly at the grinning Rong Li and said in a chilling voice:
"You've got some nerve."
