"Please, you all go get the medicine first. I really need to use the toilet. Could you tell me where it is?"
At that moment, Wang Shoucai's stomach was cramping painfully. He bent over, his face contorted in discomfort, gritting his teeth as he weakly asked for directions.
"Over there, over there..."
A little girl could no longer hold it in and ran outside to vomit. After she finished, feeling faint and pale, she heard Wang Shoucai's voice as she entered. Her heart lifted, and she hurriedly pointed him in the right direction, but as soon as she did, she covered her mouth in horror.
Miss Muxin was still in the restroom; what if she got scared and fell into the pit?
"Uh... you all wait..."
But before she could say anything to rectify the situation, it was too late. Two strong men had already helped Wang Shoucai around the corner of the hallway. The girl looked at Old Hussy with tears in her eyes. Old Hussy was anxious too but couldn't follow them to the restroom, especially since there were still many patients waiting for medicine in the small room.
And now another prescription had come in; it was truly overwhelming!
The main issue was that this clinic had strict rules regarding rewards and punishments. Patients came first, and if Sister Tang found out that personal matters delayed getting medicine for patients, there would be serious consequences.
Moreover, Muxin was not a child anymore; she should have come out immediately upon hearing voices. Besides, if the restroom door was closed, no one would force their way in.
In the restroom, Xia Muxin hadn't intended to use it but ended up relieving herself anyway. The restroom was dimly lit; locking the door felt no different from being in complete darkness at night. Perhaps due to the number of patients, it was designed conservatively, with even the only ventilation window opening towards the ceiling.
On the side of the restroom hung several pieces of pure white coarse cloth, next to a basin containing a black substance resembling medicinal liquid. Just as Xia Muxin finished washing her hands, she heard a voice urging her: "Hurry up! I can't hold it any longer!"
The urgency startled her greatly. However, there was no way out now, and no place to hide either. She had anticipated Wang Shoucai's predicament; if they were back in the village, she wouldn't be afraid. But this was someone else's territory.
Moreover, he had several strong men around him. Having suffered such a significant loss, Wang Shoucai would not let her off easily. If things turned violent, it would only be her who suffered since her family needed her now.
Thinking quickly, she tore off a piece of white cloth and dipped her fingers into the basin of black liquid before shifting her body to hide behind the restroom door.
"Alright, alright! You all wait outside!"
Just as she squatted down, Wang Shoucai was helped into the restroom. She saw a hand covered in bubbles propping up the doorframe; his entire weight leaned against it. Xia Muxin held her breath and furrowed her brow in pain—was he trying to squash her into a meat patty?
Emma could hear the sound of bones cracking.
"Master, are you alright?"
Wang Shoucai leaned against the doorframe, unfastening his trousers. Hearing Liu Mazi's words, he waved his hand, indicating that he was fine.
He was covered in nauseating bubbles, those things were everywhere, and for the past few days, he hadn't been able to get it up. How could he let them see him like this?
Seeing this, Liu Mazi and the others didn’t press further and retreated a few meters outside the door. They turned their backs to Wang Shoucai and vomited violently, nearly emptying their stomachs.
After a while, Wang Shoucai finally squatted over the latrine. Just as he let out a long fart, the door suddenly moved. He had forgotten to close it, but it didn’t matter; Liu Mazi and the others were guarding outside. However, what was that pair of dark hands?
Moreover... those fingers could move.
Suddenly, Wang Shoucai felt a chill run down his spine. The Tang Family Medical Hall had always been heavy with yin energy; it was filled with sick people or those on the brink of death.
"I... die... so... tragically!"
Suddenly, a head without a face emerged. The long black hair nearly touched the ground. This ghost still had a body, but its white snow-like clothing had a hole in the middle of its chest. Its voice was eerie and carried a bloody malice.
The nails on those ten fingers were as black as ink. Suddenly, a drop of blood oozed from the hole in the white clothing, and both hands reached out toward him.
"Ah... someone come quickly! A ghost! A ghost..."
Wang Shoucai's eyes widened in terror, but all he heard was the door slamming shut with a bang. The fierce ghost revealed its true appearance; there were bloodstains at its eyes, mouth, and nose—its visage was simply horrifying.
"Hehehe, scapegoat, I've finally found you."
The ghost suddenly licked the blood from the corner of its mouth, revealing a sinister and terrifying smile. Its voice was hoarse and low, almost only audible to Wang Shoucai.
As he watched those hands reach for his neck, Wang Shoucai's pupils dilated, and his body leaned back instinctively. Suddenly, there was a splash as Wang Shoucai fell into the latrine.
Xia Muxin blinked her eyes and stifled her laughter as she quickly hid in the corner by the door. A commotion followed as someone forcefully kicked open the door. Then they heard Wang Shoucai splashing around at the bottom of the latrine:
“Ah... I don’t want to die, I don’t want to die, there are ghosts, ghosts…”
“Sir, sir!”
Liu Mazi and the others sighed helplessly at the scene. The acid in their stomachs was rising again, but they had already emptied it out; these days had been exhausting enough.
They quickly found a Bamboo Pole from outside to pull Wang Shoucai up. “Sir, over here, over here, hold on tight!” Each of them pinched their noses. Fortunately, the light in the toilet was dim, so they couldn’t see the disgusting excrement clearly.
At that moment, the two were bent over with their backs high in the air, speaking with a stuffy voice while pinching their noses. When Wang Shoucai grabbed hold of the Bamboo Pole, they began to pull him up.
Xia Muxin was knocked dizzy by a door plank that had been kicked over, her head buzzing. Finally coming to her senses, she saw Wang Shoucai about to be pulled up and charged forward with all her strength, kicking Liu Mazi and the other person right in their behinds. Instantly, there were three loud splashes.
Liu Mazi and the other person fell into the cesspit, splattering filth everywhere...
Xia Muxin ran out immediately, taking off the white cloth she wore and wiping her nose, eyes, and mouth.
What a damn misfortune! Wang Shoucai was as fat as a pig; when he leaned against the door plank, it hit her nose and blood gushed out. Fortunately, she was quick-witted enough to smear the blood on her eyes and mouth and let it drip onto her chest. She took off her headband and tied her messy hair in front of her face to cover it up. With a few fierce expressions added for good measure, it would have been hard to pass unnoticed otherwise.
However, Wang Shoucai was too easily frightened; he just fell into the cesspit like that...
The main issue was that Sister Tang’s toilet was designed like a haunted house, complete with howling winds from above. If it were night, she wouldn’t dare come here alone.
But today had been worth it; kicking those people into the cesspit was quite amusing...
Yet this wasn’t a place to linger. Xia Muxin tossed the black-and-red-stained white cloth onto the Bamboo Pole outside and hastily tied her disheveled hair back with a rope. Then she rushed to the counter. Seeing that Wang Shoucai’s group wasn’t there yet, she quickly pulled Old Hussy aside and asked for prices before handing over two ten-tael silver notes.
Old Hussy was still looking for change when she saw Xia Muxin struggling to carry a bag toward the door.
“Miss, I still need to give you change; you look…”
“Old Hussy, consider the rest compensation for your losses; don’t follow me!”
Before Old Hussy could finish her sentence, Xia Muxin’s hurried breathing echoed back. Though she struggled under the weight of the bag, she felt as if evil spirits were chasing her from behind and didn’t care if she twisted her ankle.
Old Hussy shook her head, suddenly reminded of Xia Muxin's disheveled appearance, and a chill ran down her spine. Could it be that she had been bullied?
Just as Xia Muxin's petite figure disappeared into the crowd, two burly men approached from a small room. One of them glanced towards the corridor and muttered to himself, "Could the old man have fallen into the latrine? How could it take him so long just to use the restroom?"
Next to the Tang Family Pharmacy was a small room filled with chairs specifically prepared for patients. Moreover, they preferred not to be disturbed while preparing medicine. Sister Tang was highly skilled in medicine and had a good reputation, so everyone trusted her and willingly waited in the small room.
Although they had arrived late, they avoided seeing Wang Shoucai, whose lack of focus had led to decreased efficiency. Old Hussy instructed a few people to prepare their medicine first, which amounted to ten large bags—quite expensive at nearly ten taels each.
"Guests, your medicine is ready!" Old Hussy called out as she packaged the medicine in a medium-sized sack. Seeing them approach, she reminded them.
"Hey, wait here for a moment. I'm going to check why he hasn't come back yet."
Upon hearing this, one burly man nudged his companion and whispered before heading towards the corridor.
As soon as he turned the corner of the corridor, a strong stench of excrement assaulted his nostrils. The burly man frowned, an expression of disgust crossing his face. He pinched his nose tightly and took several large strides forward. When he looked up, he saw three people slumped at the entrance of the latrine, covered in yellowish goo.
Beneath them lay a disgusting mess of excrement. As he recognized the three individuals, he felt a jolt of shock and almost thought he was hallucinating. After a long pause, he finally called out softly:
"Old man, Brother Ma, you... what happened to you?"
