Summer Forest
They returned just as the sun was setting. As soon as they got home, they handed over the more than forty taels of silver they had earned from selling goods to Xia Muxin. Xia Muxin was so excited that she pulled them to try her creations. After a joyful family dinner, they all went to bed early.
The next morning, Aunt Xia cooked a pot of porridge. After the family had a simple meal, Xia Muxin, along with Summer Forest, took Gynostemma and Crispy Orchid Beans to Town.
Xia Xiaosong continued to catch net fish, while Aunt Xia prepared medicine and cleaned the remaining mushrooms to dry. Xia Tieshu continued to bundle firewood.
Since there was no firewood to sell, Xia Muxin and the others did not pull a cart. Instead, Summer Forest carried the Crispy Orchid Beans on his shoulder while Xia Muxin held the Gynostemma and a bamboo tube of water. By the time they reached Town, it was already bright.
Town was bustling with people. They found an empty spot to set down their goods, but passersby didn’t approach them because of their shabby clothing, let alone inquire about the basket covered with a layer of worn gray cloth.
Xia Muxin wasn’t in a hurry. She bought a scale and wrapped some oil paper around her purchases before sitting down to rest for a while. After quenching her thirst with some water, she finally lifted the gray cloth off the basket and grabbed a handful of Orchid Beans, sitting down to eat.
Since the beans had just been fried and the weather was hot, as soon as she uncovered them, a fragrant aroma wafted through the air. Before long, people began peeking over curiously.
After eating a few beans, Xia Muxin clapped her hands and stood up, calling out loudly, “Come one, come all! Don’t miss out! Exclusive recipe, unique flavor—Crispy Orchid Beans! If you don’t buy them, you’ll regret it!”
Her voice was clear and crisp, like water flowing over parched hearts, bringing an indescribable sense of comfort and tranquility. Moreover, the golden and shiny treats in her basket were unlike anything anyone had seen before. Curiosity piqued, someone finally asked, “Miss, how much are these?”
“This beautiful older sister,” she replied with a smile, “you clearly know how to enjoy life! These Crispy Orchid Beans go through forty-nine processes—soaking, drying, boiling, frying—and as a simple country girl, I won’t charge much. One or two silver coins per pound; for one hundred wen it’s one or two. If you want some, you’d better grab them quickly!”
Xia Muxin flashed her perfect eight-toothed smile while handing two Orchid Beans to the middle-aged woman who had asked the question.
The middle-aged woman, delighted by the little child calling her "big sister," felt a surge of joy inside. Seeing that she could taste the beans before buying them only made her more appreciative of Xia Muxin, and she promptly brought the Orchid Beans to her mouth.
Noticing the woman's eyes widening with surprise and excitement, Xia Muxin cheerfully asked, "Big sister, would you like to buy some?"
"Yes, yes! Please weigh me two pounds," the middle-aged woman exclaimed after finishing two Fava Beans. Her eyes sparkled with an almost greedy light as she stared at the small, plump Fava Beans.
Xia Muxin smiled and said, "Alright!" She took out the scale she had prepared earlier and weighed out exactly two pounds of Orchid Beans, wrapping them in oil paper with great enthusiasm before handing them to the woman. "Here you go, sister. Please take care of it."
The woman paid with silver coins and happily headed home.
"I'll take two taels," another customer chimed in as soon as they saw someone buying. Soon, others followed suit, purchasing two taels or even a pound.
However, those who bought two taels quickly turned back again after just a moment, while those who bought a pound or two returned home. In less than half an hour, all the Orchid Beans were sold out.
