As the Fava Beans changed color, they were scooped out and poured into the Wooden Basin that Xia Tieshu had just prepared. Then, she added her specially mixed seasoning along with a bit of sugar.
After completing this, she used a spatula to spread the Fava Beans out, allowing them to cool.
“Oh my, Muxin, these Fava Beans are golden and beautiful, and the aroma is simply mouthwatering.”
This batch had been fried to about four pounds, now spread out in the Wooden Basin, glistening with a shiny golden hue. Aunt Xia inhaled the fragrant scent, feeling her stomach stir slightly. She swallowed hard and absentmindedly touched her still-flat belly, exclaiming in surprise.
“Mother, these are called Crispy Orchid Beans. They’re still hot; you can eat them once they cool down.” Xia Muxin was confident in her cooking skills but remembered that Aunt Xia was expecting and shouldn’t eat anything too hot. She chuckled as she spoke.
Aunt Xia felt her face flush at Muxin's words. Seeing her daughter so eager to eat despite being so grown-up would surely make the villagers laugh.
Xia Muxin ran to grab two Bamboo Baskets that had been washed and dried outside, placing them next to the Wooden Basin before starting on the second batch of Orchid Beans.
Once the second batch was done frying, she poured the first batch into one basket and then added the second batch to the Wooden Basin to cool. This process continued for a total of five rounds until all the beans were fried.
Fortunately, everything had been prepared in advance, and Aunt Xia managed the fire well, so everything went smoothly without taking much time.
“Mother, give it a try and see how it tastes!”
The two had been so busy earlier that they completely forgot about tasting their creation. Now, wiping the fine sweat from her forehead, Xia Muxin took a handful of already-cooled Orchid Beans and offered some to Aunt Xia while popping a few into her own mouth.
The Orchid Beans were fragrant and crispy, crumbling at the first bite, with a hint of light sweetness, and they didn't even need to be peeled. Aunt Xia took one and exclaimed, "Muxin, this... this is incredible! I can't believe such delicious Fava Beans exist in the world."
"Hehe..." Xia Muxin also ate a few and found them delightful. She then dashed to the back of the Thatched Cottage, where her brother was still bundling firewood. Approaching him playfully, she said, "Brother, close your eyes and open your mouth."
Xia Tieshu was taken aback by his sister's mischievous tone but eventually smiled indulgently and complied. Xia Muxin stifled a laugh as she placed a Fava Bean into her brother's mouth. Moments later, he frowned slightly, moved his mouth a few times, then opened his eyes and asked, "Muxin, what did you just make me eat?"
"Was it good?" Seeing her brother's expressive reaction, Xia Muxin playfully refused to give him a straight answer.
Xia Tieshu nodded vigorously, repeatedly saying, "Delicious! It's fragrant and crispy with a light sweetness that lingers in your mouth."
Hearing this made Xia Muxin feel satisfied. She spread her hands open to reveal several shiny golden Orchid Beans resting in her palms.
"This... this is what you call Orchid Beans."
With just one glance, Xia Tieshu confirmed it and soon both siblings burst into joyful laughter.
They returned from Summer Forest just as the sun was setting. Upon arriving home, they handed over the more than forty taels of silver they had earned from selling goods to Xia Muxin. Excitedly, she pulled them along to taste her results. After enjoying a harmonious family dinner together, they all went to rest early.
