Then, the Golden Python took her to its cave and communicated through its gaze, suggesting that she could come visit anytime she wanted. Of course, this was all just Xia Muxin's speculation. After a playful exchange between the girl and the snake, Xia Muxin reluctantly left.
Ming Yi watched as the frail figure gradually disappeared, his head drooping in disappointment. The Golden Python certainly knew how to take credit; it was clearly instructed by its master to prepare some game meat for Xia Muxin as soon as she arrived, without letting her know. However, the girl would likely never understand the effort behind it.
And how would he explain this to his master? With that thought, he shot a sharp glare at the Golden Python, which seemed quite pleased with itself. It snorted through its nose and flicked its tail as it curled up in its cave to take a nap.
Since it was still early, Xia Muxin decided to accompany Songzi and her father to town to sell firewood and game meat. She carefully hid the game meat inside the firewood; unless someone looked closely, it would be nearly invisible. She carried a wild chicken and a wild rabbit, seeing her father and Songzi off at the road's exit before heading back.
On her way home, she noticed some villagers starting to harvest early rice, so she ran to check her own fields. She decided to finish the business with Su before returning to harvest.
When she got home, Xia Tieshu and Aunt Xia were already cutting fava beans.
The purpose of cutting fava beans was to allow moisture to escape from the pods so they wouldn't splatter when fried and would absorb more flavor.
This first batch of fava beans weighed around twenty pounds. Cutting them one by one was indeed time-consuming, especially since there were no machines in this era. Seeing how much time it took, Xia Muxin chided herself for not buying a few more pairs of scissors. With no other choice, she picked up a knife and joined in.
"Muxin, you're not used to that knife; you should use scissors instead. I can manage with the knife," Xia Tieshu said when he noticed her clumsily slicing the fava beans. He handed her the scissors.
Xia Muxin took the scissors and found them much easier to use. Seeing this, Aunt Xia brought over a machete but was quickly stopped by Xia Tieshu, who took it away from her.
The three of them chatted casually as they worked on their task, taking a full hour to finish preparing the fava beans.
Immediately, Xia Muxin soaked the cut Fava Beans in clean water again while she began preparing the ingredients.
Aunt Xia and Xia Tieshu, seeing that they couldn't be of much help, each found something else to occupy themselves with.
After about half an hour, Xia Muxin started to scoop out the soaked Fava Beans from the bucket and placed them on a plate to drain. While draining, she went to the stove to start a fire, wash the pot, and boil water. Once the water boiled, she poured it over the Fava Beans and after about two minutes, she scooped them up again to continue draining.
Then she washed the pot again, heated oil, and when the oil started bubbling, she added the drained Fava Beans.
“Muxin, do you need any help?” Aunt Xia had gone outside for a moment, probably worried about the newly planted vegetables. Now, brushing off the dirt from her hands, she asked as she saw Xia Muxin busy at work.
“Mom, please wash your hands first and then come help me with the fire,” Xia Muxin replied while stirring the Fava Beans in the pot to ensure they cooked evenly.
Aunt Xia quickly washed her hands and came over to help with the fire. Meanwhile, Xia Muxin kept stirring the Fava Beans in the pot until they changed color. She then scooped them out and poured them into a Wooden Basin that Xia Tieshu had just prepared. After that, she added her specially mixed seasoning along with some sugar.
