The neighbors around initially wanted to say a few words of advice, but as soon as Xia Muxin spoke, everyone fell silent, casting appreciative glances at her.
This child had both vision and courage. Usually, with the Wu Family causing such a ruckus, who would dare to step forward and say anything? The Wu Family would surely chase you down with a hoe if you did. Besides, family scandals are best kept private, but the Wu Family was different; they were always airing their dirty laundry, making sure everyone knew about their shameful affairs.
Old Man Summer nudged her gently, his wrinkled face filled with worry, but Xia Muxin refused to let go of his arm and led him toward their home.
"Xia, if you go there, don’t come back. We don’t need you," Zhou Yousheng and his brothers panicked at Old Man Summer's compliance with Xia Muxin. After all, their current way of life depended on Old Man Summer. Just then, the Wu Family foolishly shouted at Xia Muxin's retreating figure.
Xia Muxin laughed and immediately turned around, revealing her eight pearly white teeth. "Then thank you! Our family is just waiting for Grandpa to come back together." With that, she pulled Old Man Summer inside and shut the door firmly, cutting off the gaze of the Wu Family outside.
"Hey... this little vixen! Three days without a beating and she really thinks she can act up. Just wait and see how I deal with you today." The Wu Family was infuriated by Xia Muxin's actions; they rolled up their sleeves and grabbed a hoe from their doorstep, heading toward the Xia Family's thatched cottage.
"Dad, how much silver do you think the Wang family will need to treat those people? Will they go bankrupt? Also, if they’re paralyzed, wouldn’t it be better to just die? If Wang Shoucai doesn’t get better, will the Meng Family dig a grave for him?"
The Wu Family was known for their fiery temperament and ruthless nature. Zhou Yousheng and his brothers were very afraid of her; however, they let her be for now. She stopped right at the Xia Family's gate, tossed aside the hoe, spat in her hand, bent down to pick up a few stones, and began throwing them at the dilapidated door of the Xia Family.
"Ah! I poured some poison on these stones today; whoever picks them up might end up itching like crazy." With a loud thud as one hit its mark, Xia Muxin smirked. Just as the Wu Family was about to throw another stone, she spoke up at just the right moment. Suddenly, there was a yelp followed by silence.
Xia Muxin knew that she must have hit her own foot. She then filled a bowl with fish soup for Old Man Summer and said softly, "Grandpa, here’s your soup!"
Old Man Summer held the bowl with misty eyes. In the past, Xia Muxin had been just as obedient, serving him rice and soup. But it seemed like ages ago—so long that those beautiful memories felt like they only existed in dreams. After a long pause, he choked out, "Linzi, I’m sorry for what I’ve done to you and your family!" He spoke through tears.
Father and son had not gathered for a long time. Summer Forest felt a deep ache for his father, and his eyes turned red. However, he was not good with words and could only hoarsely say, "Dad, we are all family. What are you talking about?"
Aunt Xia was also wiping away her tears and said, "Dad, you are getting older. Why don't you just stay home instead of going to Town? Come back and live with us. As long as we have enough water to drink, we won't let you go hungry."
Watching this scene, Xia Muxin felt turmoil in her heart; it was incredibly painful for her. Her efforts to earn money and build a big house were all aimed at providing a comfortable life for her family.
