The duck that was almost in hand flew away, and Xia Muxin paused for a moment before shrugging helplessly.
On the way back, they passed through a bamboo grove. Xia Muxin rolled up her sleeves and cut down two bamboo stalks. Xia Tieshu had injured his leg, but his hands were still capable. Having learned some carpentry skills from Summer Forest earlier, she thought that if she could sketch out a model of a crossbow, perhaps Summer Forest could guide her in making one. She had intended to do it herself, but her body was too weak, and she wasn't accustomed to using the machete. As long as they got it done, she could always refine it later.
Dinner was simple. Xia Muxin cooked using some mushrooms she had gathered while chopping wood, along with a small piece of meat left over from lunch, which she minced. The only bit of oil they had was what had rendered out during lunch's stir-fried meat, which Xia Muxin hesitated to use. Instead, she used the leftover vegetable juice as oil and boiled a large pot of soup. Just before it was ready, she added some freshly picked wild greens. Xia Xiaosong had already been salivating at the smell of the soup.
The staple food consisted of a few buns given by the village chief. The family sat together, sipping the steaming soup and eating the steamed buns, feeling an infinite warmth and happiness.
"Sis, when did you get so good at making soup? I've already had three big bamboo tubes full!" After finishing the last drop from his bamboo tube, Songzi's eyes sparkled with delight as he savored the taste.
Since they didn't have bowls at home, Xia Muxin had brought a bamboo stalk into their thatched cottage and used mud to mark where to cut it. She instructed Xia Tieshu to cut along her markings. This way, five bamboo tubes became their bowls.
However, Xia Muxin boiled them in water first before letting them use them.
"Yes, Muxin, this soup is so delicious! Mom has never tasted such good soup before. And these bamboo tubes are incredibly useful; we won't need to use leaves to eat anymore." Aunt Xia also found today's meal delightful; she drank two bamboo tubes of soup and even ate a large bun.
Though it was just a simple wild vegetable minced meat soup without any oil, the family praised it as if they were feasting on something exquisite.
Perhaps the happiness people chase after is simply being able to sit together as a family and enjoy a hearty meal...
After dinner, darkness enveloped the surroundings. Songzi and their father went to fetch water from the river. Since there was no kerosene for lighting in the house, Xia Muxin started a fire inside and began sketching the model of the crossbow on the ground with a stick. "Brother, take a look at this thing. Do you think we can make it?"
At that moment, Father and Songzi returned with water. The house had no water tank, and the only containers for water were these two wooden buckets. Summer Forest placed the yoke by the door, rubbing his hands together as he asked, "Muxin, why are you starting a fire indoors on such a hot day? This... this..."
Summer Forest was quite puzzled by his daughter's actions. She should have been washing up and preparing to lie down, but when he saw the drawing on the ground, he couldn't help but be taken aback.
"Dad, you're a carpenter. Can you make this?" Xia Muxin asked, her eyes wide with surprise at her father's astonishment. She jumped up and grabbed his arm eagerly.
"I can make this thing, but..."
"Isn't Big Brother your apprentice?"
Xia Muxin understood his concerns and immediately brought up Xia Tieshu. She quickly dashed to the wooden bucket, filled a bamboo tube with some water, and was about to drink when she suddenly exclaimed:
"There are Apple Snails in the river!"
