Xia Muxin brewed some medicine and glanced at the sky before calling for Songzi to gather some firewood. Summer Forest, worried about the two children, decided to accompany them.
By the time they ascended Daimiao Mountain, it was already evening. The sunset painted the entire sky above Daimiao Mountain in vibrant hues, with the light filtering through the dense leaves, casting dappled shadows on the ground. It added a unique beauty to the tranquil mountain.
As Xia Muxin chopped firewood, she surveyed her surroundings, hoping to find something edible.
The trees on Daimiao Mountain were sturdy and aged, towering high above. The leaves formed layers upon layers; despite it being summer, they remained lush and green, indicating ample moisture. It was no wonder that her family could survive on tree bark.
Watching Songzi pick up firewood, she noted that he was already seven years old. Children from well-off families his age were attending school. Songzi was smart and sensible; she felt compelled to find a way to earn money so he could also attend school.
Her brother had feelings for Ermiao, but she was the village chief's daughter. In ancient times, marriages weren't as freely chosen as they are today. Given their family's poor circumstances, even though the village chief was a good man, he might not agree to such a match. After all, no one wanted to see their daughter suffer in a less fortunate household.
Thus, Xia Muxin knew that improving their family's situation was essential for her brother to be worthy of Ermiao.
"Big sister, over there seems to be a rabbit," Summer Forest said as she piled the firewood Songzi had collected onto the cart. Thankfully, she had built a cart earlier; even without an ox, she could still carry some things on her shoulders.
Otherwise, her frail body would only hold her children back. Lost in thought and sighing at her circumstances, she suddenly heard Songzi call out and immediately dropped the firewood to run over.
She remembered catching a rabbit last year that weighed a full four pounds. They couldn't bear to eat it and sold it cheaply in town instead.
The forest was vast, filled with game meat, and many people hunted there. Those who weren't professionals like them usually relied on luck; if they were fortunate, they might catch one or two animals. If luck was against them, they could chase for hours without success and risk injuring themselves in the process. Therefore, under normal circumstances, they avoided reckless behavior, fearing encounters with formidable wild beasts.
There was indeed a precedent for this.
Xia Muxin was still pondering how to make money when she heard Songzi's words. Her eyes suddenly brightened, and she immediately put down the machete in her hand. She tiptoed over and, following the direction pointed by Songzi, spotted a round gray rabbit digging in the dirt nearby.
Xia Muxin waved at Summer Forest and Songzi, then whispered a few words. Seeing their delighted nods, she stealthily moved toward one side.
Songzi, being the youngest, was worried about causing a commotion, so he stayed put. Summer Forest also moved to another side. In this way, the three of them formed a triangle and slowly advanced toward the rabbit under Xia Muxin's guidance.
As they surrounded it from different angles, they could see the distance closing in. If they all pounced at the same time, they would surely catch it. Just as they were about to leap forward, the rabbit suddenly seemed startled. With a powerful kick of its hind legs, it darted into the weeds and vanished without a trace.
The duck that was almost in their grasp had flown away. Xia Muxin stood there for a moment, then shrugged helplessly.
