"Run, sister, hurry!" 0

As night fell, Daimiao Village was shrouded in darkness. On the narrow, weed-choked paths of the fields, two figures were running breathlessly. The little boy, no more than six or seven years old, urged his eleven or twelve-year-old sister to keep moving. They glanced back frequently, and with each look, their pupils widened in fear. 0

In just a few days, the early rice harvest would begin. The fields were heavy with ripe grains, their heads bowed low. A gust of warm wind swept through, stirring up waves of golden rice that shimmered under the night sky. 0

Behind them, a group of over ten burly men appeared, brandishing sacks and spitting as they ran. 0

"Damn it! When did the young master of the Wang family need to go to such lengths for a concubine? Muxin, are you tired of living? The Wang family is the landlord here; anyone who enters their household wears gold and silver. If you get pregnant next year, you might just become one of the young master's concubines," one man shouted. 0

The speaker was Liu Mazi, the village bully who lived off exploiting the villagers. A few years ago, when the Wang family settled in the village, he became their gatekeeper. He was full of schemes but only knew how to extort honest folks and abduct beautiful women. Just recently, his gang had crippled Xia Muxin's older brother over a dispute. 0

Xia Muxin was already out of breath from running. The men behind her were all muscular and intimidating. When Liu Mazi shouted like that, her legs went weak, and she fell into the rice field. Being just twelve years old, she was tough but still cried out in pain as the mature rice stalks pricked her skin. 0

Seeing his sister in distress made Xia Xiaosong's eyes turn red with tears. But he couldn't afford to cry; instead, he gritted his teeth and struggled to pull her up. "Sister, we're almost at Daimiao Mountain! We know that place well; we can hide there where they won't find us." 0

Hearing her brother's words snapped Xia Muxin out of her fear and trembling. Without hesitation, she grabbed Xia Xiaosong's hand and started running again. 0

They had no idea how long they had been running when the shouts and threats behind them began to fade away. Finally able to breathe a sigh of relief, Xia Xiaosong placed a hand on his chest and looked back to see if they were still being pursued. 0

"Mom, sis, it's so dark here, where are we?" As he spoke, his stomach growled loudly. In the night, he blinked a few times with moist eyes and lowered his head in frustration. 0

His brother's words caught Xia Muxin off guard. She glanced around but saw nothing but darkness. She could only offer some comfort, "Song'er, we know this place in Daimiao Mountain well enough. It's just dark now; we can't see anything. They probably haven't caught up with us yet. Let's just find a spot to rest." 0

Xia Xiaosong tightened his grip on his sister's hand and softly replied with a hum. 0

The two of them were drenched in sweat from running. As night fell in the mountains, the wind turned chilly, making them shiver. Moreover, they were both so hungry that their stomachs felt like they were touching their backs. With tears welling up in her eyes, Xia Muxin pulled her frail body closer to Xia Xiaosong and groped her way down to sit on the muddy ground. 0

As soon as she sat down, Xia Xiaosong was pushed away quite a distance. He heard Xia Muxin let out a small cry before falling silent. 0
