When I returned to the the Dong Family, they were all absent. The intricately carved iron gate was tightly locked, and I couldn't get in. I tried the old door lock code, but it didn't work. Clearly, no one had informed me that the code had changed. I awkwardly withdrew my hand, preparing to leave.
"Second Young Lady?"
Auntie came back from grocery shopping and recognized me. I nodded slightly as a greeting. As she opened the door, she was overwhelmed with joy and tears, saying, "It's so good to see you back."
"While you were away these past few years, Mr. and Mrs., Young Master, and Miss were all very worried about you." She wanted to notify them.
I stopped her. "I'm tired and want to rest first."
"Alright, I'll prepare your room right away."
I pointed to my old room and said, "No need; I'll just stay there."
Auntie's smile froze as she awkwardly explained, "That's the Miss's dressing room."
I nodded and replied, "Then please help me prepare a guest room."
"It's no trouble at all."
Auntie was very attentive and quickly got the guest room ready. After sitting on a plane for a whole day, I was exhausted and soon fell asleep. When I woke up again, it was already dark outside. The the Dong Family had returned. Dong Chen was showing her parents the new handbag she bought today.
The bright, soft light illuminated their faces as they smiled, their eyes curved in joy and harmony. I stood quietly at the top of the stairs on the second floor, gazing at this scene without envy, only feeling a sense of nostalgia. Such a wonderful family atmosphere, one that I could never truly be a part of.
When I was young, Dong Chen liked to snatch my toys, and Dong Hui would always help me get them back. Dong Chen would angrily complain, "Mom, brother and sister are teaming up to bully me." Mom would then scold Dong Hui, saying, "You are the older brother; why don't you let your sister have her way?" Dong Hui would place his hands on his hips and huff, "I don't want to be the older brother; I want to be the brother of my sister." Dad and Mom would burst into laughter at this.
Dong Chen, frustrated, would stomp her feet and go find Grandma to complain. Grandma would comfort her, saying, "Chen Chen, dear, you are our little princess in the the Dong Family; they all have to give way to you." Later on, Grandma passed away, Dong Hui went abroad for studies, and Dong Chen grew up and no longer complained.
I was no longer a part of the the Dong Family either. The maid noticed me: "Second Young Lady, you're awake?" In the living room on the first floor, the members of the the Dong Family looked up in unison at me. Dong Chen's smile faltered; she appeared awkward and somewhat guilty.
"Dong Lan? When did you come back?"
"Why didn't you say anything?"
I walked down the stairs step by step and stood under the bright light: "My wallet was stolen, and my documents were lost. I had no choice but to come back."
"You child, still so forgetful. How will you ever get married like this?" Mom frowned, her tone revealing her displeasure. The maid immediately came to my defense: "The Second Young Lady must be exhausted..."
As soon as I came back, I saw her at the door, looking pitiful. She must have suffered a lot outside.
Dong Chen affectionately hugged our mother's arm and said, "Mom, it's been so hard for my sister to come back. Let's make it up to her, okay?"
Mom patted her hand gently and replied, "You have such a kind heart."
Dad said, "Dong Lan, you haven't eaten yet, have you? Your brother will be back soon; let's wait for him to eat together."
"Okay."
I walked over to Dong Chen, picked up the bag she was trying out, and admired it closely. "Sister, is this new?"
Dong Chen's expression stiffened for a moment before she nodded.
I picked up another bag. "Is this one new too?"
Dong Chen nodded again.
I put the bags down and said, "Sister, you're so lucky. You receive so many gifts every year on your birthday."
Dong Chen's face turned slightly pale, clearly nervous.
Mom smiled and said, "Your sister is getting engaged; these are all gifts from the groom's side."
"Engaged?"
I pretended to be surprised. "How come I didn't hear about this?"
