Imperial Guard, Commander's Office.
Dinner time.
Deputy Commander Ren Yuan and three senior military officers were having dinner, discussing some trivial matters within the military.
Currently serving as the personal chef for Commander's Office, Lu Huiyun brought out a large plate of Mouthwatering Chicken, which is Ren Yuan's favorite dish.
“Li Jiang, Dao Cheng, you all should try this. How does the taste of this Mouthwatering Chicken compare to that from Fragrant Pavilion?”
Before putting a piece of the reddish, oily Mouthwatering Chicken into his mouth, Ren Yuan encouraged his subordinates to taste Lu Huiyun's cooking.
After serving the dishes, Lu Huiyun did not leave; she seemed to be waiting for compliments from the officers.
The officer referred to as Li Jiang was a rare sight among the Imperial Guard, being a plump general.
He was not particularly tall, just over 1.7 meters, but weighed at least a hundred kilograms.
Sitting at the table, he resembled a large barrel, with bulging eyes and an oily face, looking every bit like a gluttonous warrior.
Ren Yuan enjoyed watching Li Jiang eat; this guy's voracious appetite was quite appetizing to behold.
As Ren Yuan encouraged him to try the dish, Li Jiang, salivating, boldly grabbed a large piece of the reddish-brown chicken and stuffed it into his mouth.
Immediately, a strong and spicy flavor burst in his mouth, mixed with a tangy aroma that filled his cheeks with saliva.
He couldn't care less about conversation as he wolfed down the tender meat and quickly reached for another piece.
Next to him, female officer Xiao Taili, eager to get in before Li Jiang could grab another piece, snatched a piece of chicken for herself. While chewing and enjoying it, she teased Li Jiang: “Hey Li, can you slow down? This is Commander Yuan's favorite dish; don’t eat it all yourself!”
"Ha ha, delicious! So delicious!"
Li Jiang was enjoying the food and didn't care about anything else. He shouted that it was tasty and grabbed a large piece of chicken to indulge in.
Sitting across from Li Jiang was the Deputy Commander of the Imperial Guard, Ma Daocheng, who took a bite of the tender and spicy chicken. He praised Lu Huiyun, saying, "Chef Lu, your skills are truly remarkable! This Mouthwatering Chicken could be served as a signature dish at the Fragrant Pavilion. The fresh and spicy flavor is just like what Chef Zhao Zhiqiang makes at the Fragrant Pavilion."
"Not at all, not at all," Lu Huiyun said with a smile, waving her hand in modesty while pushing the credit to Ren Yuan. "If it weren't for Sister Two providing me with top-notch fragrant chili oil, how could I possibly make such delicious Mouthwatering Chicken?"
Xiao Taili chimed in, flattering Ren Yuan, "Commander Yuan, you are amazing! If you were to open a kitchen at Tangling, those Dining Halls would probably go out of business."
Ren Yuan smiled happily and replied, "Stop flattering me. This chili oil is something I learned from Chef Zhao Zhiqiang; it's not my own creation."
Ren Yuan continued, "While this oil is great, the most important thing is still our chef's skills. The way she measured the ingredients and controlled the heat for this dish is just perfect, which is why it has such a wonderful taste."
Turning to Lu Huiyun, he praised her again, saying, "Chef, if I eat your Mouthwatering Chicken a few more times, I might forget all about the Fragrant Pavilion."
"Sister Two, you flatter me. I'm still far from Chef Zhao at the Fragrant Pavilion," Lu Huiyun replied.
Although she said this, Lu Huiyun didn't feel that she was much inferior to Zhao Zhiqiang.
The officers were enjoying their meal when suddenly a messenger burst into the Dining Hall.
Standing at attention, he reported to Ren Yuan, "Report, Commander! Li Xiliang has returned with Seventh Sister and that chef. Should I have them wait outside or bring them in?"
"So that chef really came back?" Ren Yuan chuckled and wiped his mouth clean with a cloth. He ordered the messenger, "Bring them in. It’s just right to let this so-called 'number one' Gourmet Chef add some dishes for us; I want to see how good his skills really are."
Li Jiang and the other two officers had never heard of Chen Zao.
At that moment, when Ren Yuan mentioned "the top Gourmet Chef," Li Jiang's eyes lit up. He wiped the red oil from the Mouthwatering Chicken off his mouth with his hand and excitedly said, "Yuan, you have quite the connections! To invite the top Gourmet Chef is impressive! Which Dining Hall does this Gourmet Chef belong to? Or did he come from Panglong Stronghold?"
Lu Huiyun, who was nearby, scoffed, "What do you mean from Panglong Stronghold? It's just a wild cook that Seventh Sister ran into somewhere. I don't know how he has the audacity to call himself the best."
Ren Yuan smiled lightly and didn't elaborate further.
In fact, she also thought it was too arrogant for someone to claim to be "the best."
However, since this person dared to barge into the Commander's Office, he must have some skills, right?
In reality, Chen Zao never claimed to be the best; it was Ren Xiao who got too angry after being mocked by Ren Yuan and made a boastful statement that Chen Zao was the unparalleled Gourmet Chef in the world.
Ma Daocheng and Xiao Taili noticed a hint of disdain in Ren Yuan's eyes and probably guessed what was going on.
Both were eager to see some entertainment and were holding back their urge to mock this so-called top Gourmet Chef.
Before long, Li Xiliang brought Chen Zao and Ren Xiao into the Dining Hall.
What surprised several officers and Ren Yuan was that this "top" Gourmet Chef turned out to be a tall and robust man!
In their impression, most renowned chefs from Tangling were not particularly skilled in martial arts, so it was rare to see one with a tall physique. They usually focused on culinary arts, resulting in bodies more like Li Jiang's barrel-shaped build.
How could this chef be so strong and imposing?
Looking at this guy's dark and rugged appearance, he didn't seem like a chef at all.
What kind of assassin is this?
Ma Daocheng and the others immediately heightened their vigilance, casting cold glances at Chen Zao, trying to see through his true nature.
The Dining Hall Light Board was equipped with a row of high-wattage Bioluminescent White Light Lamps, illuminating the hall brightly.
The cool-toned light shone on several officers at the dining table, casting a faint glow on their skin, giving it a soft luster.
The sheen on Ren Yuan's face was particularly rosy and striking, indicating that he was the highest-ranking martial artist in the hall, having reached an upper intermediate level.
In contrast, the light reflecting off Chen Zao's dark skin did not exhibit the unique luster typical of an Intermediate Warrior.
Several officers noticed this detail.
This left them somewhat puzzled: who exactly was this guy? Just an ordinary person with a tall stature?
"Sister Two, Chef Chen has arrived!"
Ren Xiao strutted forward with confidence, excitedly reporting to Ren Yuan while greeting the other three officers and introducing Chen Zao.
Xiao Taili realized that Chen Zao was not a peer-level expert and relaxed his demeanor, smirking as he mocked Chen Zao, "This esteemed Gourmet Chef, how did you injure your hand? Did you burn yourself while cooking?"
