Amy and Nick just said goodbye to puppet mother Laura, slowly walked out of the seemingly inconspicuous but could lead to another world door. When the two returned to the real world home, the eerie atmosphere and dim lighting greeted them again.
Back in their real home, Amy and Nick couldn't help but compare the extreme differences between the two worlds before and after.
The small garden in front of the door is neglected, with weeds overgrown. The low-hanging clouds make the light appear dimmer, and the old door creaks, familiar yet sharp in its stimulation. The dim light shines on the dirty floor. All of this contrasts sharply with the impeccable cleanliness and luxury provided by the Puppet family.
"Hi, kids, where have you been?" Jack puts down the newspaper, looking a bit weary. There is a hint of heaviness behind his eyes, as if bearing countless worldly pressures.
"We'll just play nearby, Dad," Amy smiled forcefully, trying to conceal her inner unease.
"Okay, wash your hands before dinner," Jack said.
Laura pushed open the refrigerator door and frowned. "Hmm, it looks like we only have some milk and a few slices of ham left," she rummaged through and finally picked up these ingredients to start preparing dinner.
Jack sat on the sofa flipping through the newspaper, then suddenly looked up and asked, "What's wrong, do we not have enough ingredients?"
"Yes, we need to go to the town to buy some things tomorrow. Let's just make some toast and milk for tonight, it should be enough," Laura said as she placed the ham toast on the plate and poured milk into four cups.
"Amy, Nick, it's dinner time!" she called out.
The two siblings sat at the dining table, looking at the simple food with complex emotions, recalling the luxurious afternoon tea provided by the Puppet family, with its fresh salad and exquisite desserts.
Nick took a bite of toast, then brought the milk to his lips, but then set it down: "What do you think? I feel a bit conflicted."
Amy smiled and said, "Go ahead and eat. No matter what, home is always the best place."
"Oh, by the way, tomorrow Mom and Dad are going to the town to buy groceries. They will be back late, so don't wander around, okay?" Laura turned around with a forced smile on her face and an imperceptible weariness.
Dinner was simple and light - a glass of milk with a slice of ham toast. Compared to the lavishness of the Puppet family, this was hardly worth mentioning. Amy and Nick exchanged a glance, both expressing disappointment and conflict in their eyes.
At night, Amy lay in bed, her heart in turmoil. She kept thinking about the Puppet family, where everything seemed like a dream, so beautiful that one couldn't bear to leave.
Especially puppet mother Laura, her warmth and thoughtfulness make Amy feel like she has found a new home.
Nick gently knocked on Amy's door and then walked in. "Are you still awake?"
"Still awake," Amy sat up and pulled the blanket up to her knees. "What's the matter?"
Nick hesitated. "Do you feel like... that Puppet family is a little different?"
Amy bit her lip. "Of course, but they also make me feel... happy?"
Nick nodded. "I understand, but I always feel like something is off. Especially that Puppet dad, his expression always makes me feel like I'm being manipulated."
"Are you saying you think he's being controlled?" Amy frowned.
Nick shrugged. "Maybe, I'm not sure. But don't you think our home is like a rundown place compared to there?"
Amy nodded slowly. "That's right, so what's your conclusion?"
"So, I think we should go again," Nick's voice was full of determination.
Amy felt a shock in her heart, looking into Nick's eyes and sensing his seriousness. She pondered for a moment and finally nodded, "Okay, let's explore it again tomorrow."
The two of them decided to step through that eerie door once more tomorrow, in search of the truth behind the Puppet family, no matter what astonishing secrets might be hidden behind it. After all, life is an adventure, and they were ready to face the unknown.
Night falls, and Amy and Nick are fast asleep in their respective rooms. At this moment, the shadows of the big tree sway in the moonlight, as if waiting for something, or perhaps, observing the two of them.
The next day, Amy and Nick stood in front of that mysterious little door again.
The door was hidden among the branches of a big tree, seeming like a point of intersection between the natural world and another world. Behind the door was the whereabouts of Puppet Mother Laura and her Puppet family - a fascinating and dreamy world.
"Do we really have to go over there?" Amy turned to look at Nick.
"Of course, why not?" Nick responded with a smile.
Amy took a deep breath, trying to suppress the fear of the unknown in her heart, and turned the ancient doorknob. The door slowly opened, and a sweet fragrance accompanied by a warm feeling rushed towards her. It felt as if she had crossed a threshold leading to another world.
In the blink of an eye, the two of them found themselves in an overly magnificent environment. It was beyond their imagination, like a banquet hall of a noble dynasty. The walls were adorned with golden reliefs, and giant crystal chandeliers swayed gently, exuding a warm glow.
It's amazing that this space seems to extend outward. On one side, there is a small amusement park equipped with a mini roller coaster, a carousel, and even a human-powered flying machine.
"Wow! Look at that slide!" Nick pointed to a huge indoor slide that extends from the second floor to the first floor, with various twists and turns along the way. His eyes were full of excitement and curiosity.
"Come on, Amy, let's play on the slide together!" Nick grabbed Amy's hand and ran towards the slide like a child.
At that moment, Marionette Laura appeared silently in front of them. She was wearing a green silk dress, a magnificent hat, and holding an exquisite porcelain tray with all sorts of afternoon tea snacks on it.
"I'm really glad you came," she said with a smile.
Amy involuntarily stopped in her tracks, feeling a bit uneasy about the sudden appearance of Marionette Laura and Puppet Jack. Nick, on the other hand, didn't mind at all. He turned around, flashing a bright smile.
"Hi, Laura's mother, this place is really cool! How did you manage to do this?"
"Oh, it's all magic, dear," Laura said, a barely noticeable glint in her eyes.
Amy stared at the snacks on the tray, feeling that something was off. The last time she was here, Puppet Mother was just as warm, but Puppet Dad Jack seemed a bit strange.
"What are you trying to give us?" Amy asked cautiously.
"These are all small snacks, like macarons, Vienna Tower, and chocolate cake. These are all kids' favorites," Marionette Laura explained in detail, her voice carrying a hint of temptation.
Nick reached out without hesitation to take a macaron, but was firmly pulled back by Amy.
"Wait a minute, Nick," Amy warned him with her eyes.
Marionette Laura's mother's smile momentarily stiffened, then changed to an even brighter smile.
"Oh, if you have concerns, you don't have to force yourself," she said softly.
At this moment, Nick quickly reached out and grabbed a snack, stuffing it into his mouth.
AmyLooking at all this, unable to stop it in time, she could only sigh.
"Sister, don't worry. Come, let's eat together. It's really delicious!" Nick said, chewing.
Amy's stomach was also growling with hunger at this point, and she had to pick up a snack.
"Mmm, it's really delicious," Amy said with relish and agreement.
Nick smiled and said, "I told you so," with a proud smile.
"Laura's mother, the food you made is really delicious!" Amy responded excitedly.
Laura smiled and extended an invitation: "Would you like to stay for dinner?"
"Of course, yes!" Amy and Nick immediately agreed, both unwilling to return to their own true homes. Because the dinner there was only two slices of ham toast in the fridge, far from the delicious food made by Puppet Mother.
