Nan Gong Yao was still troubled about his son when a commotion suddenly erupted outside the hall. He became annoyed, and a surge of Mysterious Energy burst forth, forcefully slamming the hall doors open. He wanted to see who dared to make such a racket at his doorstep.
The wave of Mysterious Energy knocked several guards outside to the ground, and their cries of distress echoed throughout the Main Hall.
"Your Excellency!" someone outside shouted loudly, seemingly recovering from the effects of the Mysterious Energy at great speed.
Nan Gong Yao squinted and saw that it was none other than the Bai Ethnic Group, who had come early in the morning to seek an audience. They had the audacity to cause a disturbance right outside his doors after being allowed to visit Baike. He snorted coldly, temporarily setting aside the troubles brought by Nangong Tuo, and stood up to look down from above. "What is all this noise?"
The ones still able to stand outside were indeed the Five Elders of the Bai Clan. Even though some guards had recovered, upon seeing the Sovereign's fury, they dared not rise easily and remained trembling on the ground, not daring to lift their heads.
"Your Excellency, we have urgent matters to discuss," the Elder replied loudly.
Nan Gong Yao frowned. If they had urgent matters, why were they causing such a ruckus? Looking again, he noticed that Li Feng was missing and asked, "Where is Li Feng?"
One of the guards at the front shifted forward respectfully and answered, "National Sovereign, Lord Li left the palace early this morning and has not yet returned."
Li Feng actually left the palace?
Perhaps it was due to his anger at Nangong Tuo that Nan Gong Yao couldn't recall whether he had sent Li Feng out himself. He waved his hand, allowing the Five Elders of the Bai Clan to enter.
"Speak," he said directly, as the competition was imminent, and he was too lazy to engage in further banter with them.
"Your Excellency, we wish to take Baike out of the palace..."
"Oh?" Nan Gong Yao looked at the Elder who spoke, seemingly surprised that they would make such a request. "What is it? Is White Maiden uncomfortable staying in my palace?"
First, Bai Zhan came under the pretense of seeking an audience to take someone away; now these five old men were causing a stir wanting to take Baike away. Did they think Leaving the Royal Palace was their Bai Clan's backyard? They brought her in when they needed protection but now wanted to take her away just as the competition approached.
Nan Gong Yao sneered inwardly. Did they really think they could protect her if he let them take her? He did not believe they hadn't heard those rumors about whoever obtained the Legitimate Daughter of the Bai Clan gaining significant advantages during Alien Manifestation. This rumor had only spread in recent days; he wondered who was behind it. Although Nan Gong Yao held a half-believing attitude towards it, that did not mean he would easily agree to let them take her away.
"I absolutely hate being used." Nan Gong Yao's eyes narrowed into a dangerous arc as he scanned the five individuals in the hall.
"Sovereign, you are mistaken. We have offered a price for exchange," the Grand Elder said, still sweating profusely from the earlier encounter with Nan Gong Yao's Mysterious Energy. He felt it was difficult to withstand, and his body swayed slightly. If not for the support of the Second Elder beside him, he might have collapsed under Nan Gong Yao's gaze.
"Price? Hmph." Nan Gong Yao knew exactly what they were referring to—the so-called foundation of that small wooden box. To the Bai Clan, it might be a treasure, but to Nan Gong Yao, it was nothing more than a hot potato; useless in his hands and troublesome if others found out.
"Are you trying to burn the bridge after crossing it?" Elder Five stepped forward forcefully, his booming voice far more imposing than that of the Grand Elder.
Nan Gong Yao shot a glance at Elder Five. He neither acknowledged nor denied it.
"Old Five!" The Grand Elder turned to reprimand him. They were currently in need of assistance; how could they afford such an attitude? Nan Gong Yao was not someone they could easily intimidate. "Sovereign, please do not take offense. Elder Five is just straightforward and means no harm."
"No harm?" Nan Gong Yao laughed heartily, rising from his throne with renewed vigor, his gaze sharp as a hawk's. "It is not I who burns bridges."
The Bai Clan's Five Elders were momentarily stunned, exchanging glances. They had come to the palace with a mindset of merely testing the waters, but now it seemed they had no chance at all—not even half a chance.
"Bai Zhan intends to seize power; it is I who have stopped him. Now tell me, who is truly burning bridges here?" Nan Gong Yao dropped a bombshell that stirred up massive waves in the hearts of the Five Elders.
"What? Bai Zhan? Bai Zhan came to seize power? Then why..."
"Why has Baike not revealed a word?" Nan Gong Yao regarded the five as if they were fools. Did Elder Five's mind contain nothing but straw? After all, they were father and daughter. "In the face of power and profit, there are no absolute enemies or friends. Family ties are no different; how deep is your Bai Ethnic Group's bond? I doubt I need to explain that to you."
The Five Elders were left speechless by Nan Gong Yao's words, their hearts heavy with suffocation.
"This Baike..."
"Enough!" The Grand Elder interrupted Elder Five. Whatever Baike was like should remain in their hearts; there was no need to comment on her in front of Nan Gong Yao. He adjusted his emotions slightly and cupped his hands in respect. "We were reckless. Since that is the case, let Baike remain in Sovereign's palace for now."
"What? Are you not afraid I will burn bridges?" Nan Gong Yao would not let them off so easily; those who dared to provoke him must bear the consequences.
The Grand Elder awkwardly wiped his forehead and forced a smile. "It’s all a misunderstanding. We shall not disturb Sovereign any longer and will take our leave now."
Watching the five figures leave, Nan Gong Yao's eyes flashed with disdain. It was truly laughable that those who should see through things clearly could be so easily deceived.

"Haha... you mean they were chased out by Nan Gong Yao?" Bai Zhan's face lit up with joy upon hearing the report from the servant.
Ever since he had been frightened by Li Feng and had to flee from Leaving the Royal Palace in embarrassment, he had not given up hope. He sent people to monitor all entrances and exits of the palace every day. Since he couldn't rescue Baike, then those five old men couldn't either. If they succeeded, he would lose his chance once again. After waiting for so many days, he finally received good news.
The servant smiled ingratiatingly and replied, "Indeed, they came out looking dejected. You should have seen their miserable state; they looked like lost dogs..."
Bang!
Before the servant could finish his sentence, Bai Zhan's expression suddenly changed. He kicked the servant in the chest, sending him flying and causing him to spit out a mouthful of blood.
"Get lost!"
The servant struggled to prop himself up and crawled away after several attempts, completely unaware of what he had done wrong. How could he have imagined that the situation he described as a lost dog had once also applied to Bai Zhan? So this kick was truly...
A stroke of bad luck; a good thing turned into a bad one. (To be continued.)
