"Even so, I can't let them think that I..." Ouyang Zixin pondered, shaking her head, trying to figure out how to make them ask for it themselves, and then she would reluctantly agree.
"One example of Feng Chengxuan is enough," Yun Tianmo naturally understood what those people would think. If Ouyang Zixin took action directly, they would see it as her using them. They likely thought the same when she first acted on Feng Chengxuan; if the outcome hadn't been unexpected, Baike probably wouldn't have shared the secrets she knew.
Since she was willing to speak up, it was clear she had figured out the key point. This was a proactive gesture to show goodwill, and she wanted Ouyang Zixin to demonstrate the Eye Technique on her.
Who wouldn't take advantage of a favor?
Ouyang Zixin realized that with Feng Chengxuan as a precedent, those two white mice would likely be very willing to accept her use of the Eye Technique and see what subconscious memories appeared in the Small Stone Box.
"As the saying goes, behind every successful woman stands a smart man; it's really true," Ouyang Zixin smiled at Yun Tianmo, patting his shoulder with an approving expression.
With Feng Chengxuan's example, not only was Ouyang Zixin much more skilled in implementing it, but even Baike and Zhai Yiqi seemed much more relaxed, as if they no longer worried as much as when they watched Feng Chengxuan being knocked out.
The results soon came in. Most of Baike's subconscious memories were related to the Bai Clan. However, given her identity as the Legitimate Daughter of the Bai Clan, it seemed she didn't know much.
"I didn't expect she wouldn't even know what her father had done and still proudly thought of herself as the Legitimate Daughter of the Bai Clan—a noble existence," Yun Tianying scoffed. The Bai Clan was indeed as he expected. On the surface, they appeared low-key and reclusive, but in reality, they were already decaying from within. He initially thought he could learn something about the poisoning incident from Baike but found this so-called Legitimate Daughter of the Bai Clan utterly useless.
Ouyang Zixin was clearly disappointed as well because she had roughly figured out that her mother Bai Su had some connection with this Bai Clan. Now that her mother had become someone without a family background, it meant that the Bai Clan must have done something behind the scenes to make her mother abandon her family. Instead, she started anew with her father in the Exiled Nation. However, none of these matters appeared in Baike's subconscious. The most important thing in her subconscious was the education she received: she was the Legitimate Daughter of the Bai Clan and how noble she was.
There wasn't even a shred of useful information. What a waste of effort.
Seeing that there were no gains, Ouyang Zixin prepared to withdraw the Eye Technique but unexpectedly found Yun Tianmo, who had been silent all along, suddenly stopping her and asking her to hold on for a little longer.
"Why?"
Yun Tianmo furrowed his brows. His thin lips pressed into a line, and his tone carried a hint of melancholy. This was a rare occurrence for him, which made Ouyang Zixin pay even more attention; he must have discovered something. If even he was uncertain, then it was normal for her not to have noticed anything.
"The image in the mirror is blurry and unclear, with overlaps and changes as time passes." This was the difference that Yun Tianmo had noticed. In Feng Chengxuan's subconscious memory, this had never happened. So why were Baike's subconscious memories not only vague and overlapping but also subtly changing?
After Yun Tianmo mentioned this, Ouyang Zixin took another careful look. The reason she didn't faint this time was likely because Baike didn't possess the same Blood Curse that was within Feng Chengxuan.
"Prison cell, white gauze..." Ouyang Zixin held her breath and quietly spoke of what she had seen.
Yun Tianying and Yun Tianmo frowned upon hearing this and exchanged glances. Could it be?
"Oh my god, that's my mother!" Ouyang Zixin suddenly screamed, leaning forward as if she might dive into the Small Stone Box.
Indeed, the woman appearing in Baike's subconscious memory within the prison cell was Bai Su. However, at that time, Bai Su looked younger than Baike does now, in an empty room with only a piece of white gauze hanging from the beam. Seeing Bai Su's expressionless face, devoid of hope, Ouyang Zixin realized that someone intended for her mother to die in that prison cell.
Yun Tianmo noticed Ouyang Zixin's eyes turning blood-red, her fists clenched tightly until the knuckles turned white. He understood the fear and anger she felt inside and gave Yun Tianying a look. They positioned themselves on either side of her to prevent any dangerous actions.
Yun Tianmo was worried that Ouyang Zixin would hurt herself.
Yun Tianying was concerned that Ouyang Zixin would kill Baike.
The two brothers kept Ouyang Zixin firmly surrounded while also needing to pay attention to her movements and keep an eye on the images in the Mirror Guardian. They both hoped and feared that it might reveal what they wanted to know.
The clarity of the scene was fleeting, and the last glimpse of the male figure flashed through the cell before Baike's subconscious memory vanished completely.
"Why did it disappear? Who was that man? Was it my father? Did he come to save my mother?" Ouyang Zixin could not accept that the image had vanished. Although she knew her mother would not die, seeing that someone had once cruelly tortured her mother, and that it was in Baike's memory, meant that the person who imprisoned her mother and wanted to drive her to death was from the Bai Clan.
This realization made her want to rush to the Bai Clan immediately and ask them how they could treat her mother this way. Wasn't her mother a part of the Bai Clan?
Why should a mere Baike be considered a Legitimate Daughter, so noble and untouchable? What about her mother? Even if she wasn't a Legitimate Daughter, she shouldn't be treated like this.
"Calm down." Yun Tianmo felt slightly relieved when he saw that Ouyang Zixin did not act excessively. He instructed Yun Tianying to move Baike aside while he stepped forward to embrace Ouyang Zixin. One hand gently patted her back as he softly comforted her, "It's all in the past now. Your mother is fine, isn't she?"
Ouyang Zixin clutched tightly at Yun Tianmo's clothing, her voice trembling, "What does the past matter? Can a broken mirror truly be put back together? The scars cannot be erased."
Even now, Ouyang Zixin could still remember when she crossed over to the Yuhai Continent, feeling Bai Su's warm embrace, hearing her caring words and seeing her worried tears. Such a woman, she would not allow anyone to hurt her, not even in the past; she would definitely seek justice for her mother.
"Yun Tianmo, if, if..." Ouyang Zixin dared not think about it. If Bai Su had been harmed by someone from the Bai Clan back then, what would happen now?
Yun Tianmo did not know she was thinking about crossing over; he only assumed she was feeling anxious. If there were no Bai Su, then there would be no Ouyang Zixin in his arms now. Thinking of this made Yun Tianmo feel troubled as well.
"There's no rush; one day, there will come such a day."
"Mm." Ouyang Zixin closed her eyes, tears streaming down uncontrollably. She believed in Yun Tianmo, knowing what he meant by "one day," but right now, she couldn't help but want to cry... (To be continued.)
