"Calm down," Yun Tianmo said, glancing at Ouyang Zixin. He noticed her face was pale, her lips devoid of color, and her large eyes were hollow and lifeless. This version of Ouyang Zixin lacked her usual vibrancy, which made him feel a pang of sympathy; it was just a few souls, yet they had frightened her to this extent.
"Don't be afraid, I've dispersed them," he continued. No longer keeping her behind him, Yun Tianmo turned around and pulled Ouyang Zixin into his embrace. To prevent her from seeing the souls again, he bent his arm and pressed her head against his chest, blocking her view.
Holding her close, he heard her mumbling, "Ghosts don't exist, ghosts don't exist..."
Yun Tianmo felt a bit speechless. What ghosts? Was she referring to the souls?
In the Yuhai Continent, the existence of souls was not frightening; even small children wouldn’t feel scared. But why was Ouyang Zixin so terrified? Had she never seen them before?
Thanks to Yun Tianmo's strong aura, the souls were merely drifting in the distance and did not approach, yet they refused to leave. He lowered his head and gently asked, "Are the ghosts you mentioned the souls?"
It was understandable that Ouyang Zixin reacted this way. Although she had lived in the Yuhai Continent for a long time, she had indeed never encountered any souls. First of all, Ouyang Hao had protected her well; how could there be souls in Xuan Shi Mansion? Secondly, the books she read did not mention souls at all, so how could she know that people in Yuhai Continent hardly regarded souls as anything significant?
It should be noted that in the place where she lived in her past life, people would turn pale at the mention of ghosts; unless one was particularly brave, few would not fear them. She often comforted herself by saying that as long as she did no wrong in life, she wouldn't fear ghosts knocking at her door at midnight. But those were just self-comforting words. Whenever she traveled alone and stayed in unfamiliar hotels or walked home at night, she was terrified; thus, she rarely ventured out late.
In truth, she had never really encountered any ghosts before; it was merely fear in her heart. But witnessing them with her own eyes this time truly frightened her. As for Yun Tianmo's question, she didn’t know whether to answer or continue talking to herself. All he heard was her tightly pressing against him as she whispered, "Absolute idealists believe in the existence of ghosts. Absolute materialists do not believe in their existence. I am a materialist. I do not believe in ghosts; what I saw is not a ghost..."
Her words sounded extremely strange to Yun Tianmo; many of the terms were unfamiliar to him, and he couldn’t grasp what she was trying to convey. Given her current state of mind wasn’t suitable for communication, he decided to simply hold her and gently pat her back in an attempt to calm her down.
As for what had happened with Nameless, it seemed they would have to wait until Ouyang Zixin returned to normal before investigating further.
"Whoosh—whoosh—"
The two stood silently in an embrace. The originally warm scene was interrupted by a chilling wind that blew in. Ouyang Zixin suddenly lifted her head to look ahead, her eyes no longer filled with confusion and emptiness, but instead seemed to have transformed into someone else entirely. Her gaze was filled with hostility, sending a chill down Yun Tianmo's spine and raising a sense of foreboding within him.
However, before Yun Tianmo could regain control over Ouyang Zixin, she forcefully shook off his embrace, not sparing him a glance as she rushed toward the souls. As she ran, she muttered something, her voice infused with Mysterious Energy echoing throughout the Underground Palace—
"When a person dies and becomes a ghost, is it certain?
It cannot be definitively stated. All living beings in heaven and earth must die if they are born. From the creation of heaven and earth until now, countless years have passed with endless life; if there were life without death, there would not be enough space in the universe to contain all living beings. Old Friend cannot exist without death; it is the law of nature. Once dead, all become ghosts; thus, there would not be enough space in the universe to contain all ghosts either. Therefore, it is said that when a person dies, they all become ghosts; this is an illusion. However, the changes of the two energies are unpredictable; there may be souls that separate from their bodies but do not disperse completely; this is only temporary and cannot last long. Just as a person gains energy to sustain their body, like fire igniting wood—soul is its flame, body is its ash. When a person dies, their soul returns to energy, just as fire extinguishes; where does its flame go? The Old Friend receives energy to form shape, like pouring the sea into a cup; when it dies and returns to energy, it is like pouring out the cup's water back into the sea—how could it always remain as a ghost?
Her voice sounded distant, repeating phrases that did not seem to come from her mouth but rather echoed from an unknown distance. As she chanted, her form began to waver and flicker, resembling the eerie steps of Sky Treading once again; however, this time it transcended human comprehension.
Yun Tianmo initially intended to stop her but was stunned by the words she uttered. He then watched as her figure gradually became ethereal until she resembled those wandering souls. Without using Mysterious Energy, she was able to float in mid-air, leaving him momentarily at a loss for how to react.
"Hehe..." Upon reaching the souls, Ouyang Zixin suddenly laughed, her tone unsettling. Yun Tianmo frowned as he wondered what she was up to.
The souls had been drifting aimlessly before; earlier, Yun Tianmo's aura had been so strong that they dared not approach and thus did not notice Ouyang Zixin's almost imperceptible presence. Now her aura surged dramatically; although it seemed she had taken many steps forward, in reality, she reached them almost instantaneously, causing them to scatter in all directions.
"Still trying to run?" Ouyang Zixin's expression was enchanting and seductive. Although she usually did not wear makeup, at this moment she resembled a vividly blooming flower, exuding an allure completely different from her usual elegant demeanor.
She licked her blood-red lips with her tongue while one hand curled into a fist and drew one of the souls toward her as if it were a delicious morsel. The soul initially struggled but was soon shattered by her forceful grip and then drawn into her mouth with a powerful inhale.
Devouring souls?
Soul Devourer?
Yun Tianmo was shocked. There had been rumors on the Yuhai Continent about a type of evil cultivation that specialized in consuming souls. In situations where souls were insufficient, it even involved directly killing people. The Soul Devourer was a practice that was not only bloody and cruel but also extremely sinister. This method had long been eradicated, yet what was she witnessing?
Could it be that she...
(To be continued.)
P.S.: Is it okay for the female protagonist to become sinister?
