"Miss, how about..."
"Do not tell my parents." Ouyang Zixin interrupted Liu Ying, her gaze coldly sweeping over the two maidservants. "I do not wish to repeat myself. Do you understand?"
Ouyang Zixin spoke slowly, her words carrying a strong sense of intimidation.
"Yes."
Since the young lady arranged for them to undergo additional training, obedience had become Ouyang Zixin's primary requirement of them. Unfortunately, it seemed they had yet to meet that expectation.
Liu Ying and Liu Lu dared not speak further and silently helped Ouyang Zixin change out of her soaked clothes. After serving her a cup of tea, they were dismissed.
The candlelight was extinguished, leaving only a faint moonlight streaming in through the window. Ouyang Zixin lay in bed, feeling slightly cold. It was unclear whether it was due to the sweat she had broken or because of that nightmare...
What did this nightmare mean? Slowly opening her eyes, her dark pupils appeared particularly bright in the soft moonlight, faintly shimmering with a silvery-gray glow—somewhat enchanting and eerie. If anyone were to meet her gaze at that moment, they would surely be captivated by the light in her eyes.
Unfortunately, there was no one else in the room, and Ouyang Zixin herself would be unaware unless there happened to be a mirror above her bed.
The first time she had this nightmare, she did not think much of it. She vaguely remembered it was the day after the Mystical Energy Test or perhaps the third day. Although she found the dream strange, she did not dwell on it.
About ten days later, she experienced the same nightmare again. And tonight, only eight days had passed since the last nightmare...
In the dream, Ouyang Zixin stood alone on a long staircase that seemed endless in both directions, surrounded by white mist. Despite ample light, nothing was visible.
During her first nightmare, Ouyang Zixin could not recall how she had woken up; she only remembered that upon waking, half of her body felt as if it had been burned by fire while the other half felt as though it had been pulled from an icy cave.
In the second nightmare, Ouyang Zixin remembered walking up the stairs but after only a few steps, she noticed that the surrounding white mist gradually emitted a pale blue light. It became increasingly hot until she watched helplessly as pale blue flames erupted from her body, flames that could not be extinguished no matter how hard she tried. After waking up, her skin felt as if it had been scorched by fire—hot and stinging.
Tonight, as she descended the staircase, this time the white mist revealed a bright red glow. She initially thought she would be burned by flames again; however, this red light that should have been searing hot instead radiated an intense chill that felt as if her blood would freeze...
Lost in thought, Ouyang Zixin seemed to feel once more the bone-chilling cold from that nightmare and tightly wrapped herself in the blanket.
It was too strange; this dream seemed selective? It felt reminiscent of a scene from a movie in her past life.
Three nightmares, three different experiences. Was it merely coincidence or was there some deeper meaning?
What will happen if I have another nightmare next time?
A long staircase, where the only options are to go up or down. Besides the first time, which I barely remember, what else is left after I have already made my choice?
Perhaps it was the shock from the dream that left Ouyang Zixin feeling dazed. After all, her body is only five years old, and her energy and stamina are limited. Unable to find a solution to her problem, she fell into a deep sleep.
When Ouyang Zixin woke up, it was already late morning.
After the Mystical Energy Test, aside from that strange dream, Ouyang Zixin's life did not change much. She spent her days in the Study, occasionally going to the backyard to help Madam Ouyang wipe away some sweat.
Oh, right. Ever since the test results indicated that she was not suited for cultivation, Ouyang Zixin had directly crossed physical training off her daily schedule.
Although she missed breakfast, there were always snacks prepared in the small kitchen, so Ouyang Zixin didn't have to worry about going hungry. After having some snacks, she planned to go to the Study to read. However, as soon as she stepped out of her room, she felt a buzzing in her head, and the usually calm air around her seemed to ripple with some disturbance.
Upon closer inspection, it seemed like nothing was amiss.
"Could it be an illusion?" It was strange; Ouyang Zixin muttered to herself as she continued toward the Study.
There seemed to be a book related to dreams in the Study that she had never been interested in before. Today, she was determined to find it and see if it could provide any clues.
"Strange, why can't I find it?" Ouyang Zixin searched for a long time in the Study but could not locate the book about dreams that she remembered.
"Miss, what book are you looking for? I can help you search," Liu Lvy said. She was responsible for organizing the Study and procuring new books.
"I can't remember the title clearly; it's probably a book about dreams. I distinctly remember it being in here; how can it be missing?"
Should I just give up? There's a saying that goes—when you need it, you can't find it; when you stop looking for it, it will naturally appear.
"Miss, are you sure? There has never been a book related to dreams in your Study," Liu Lvy pondered for a while but couldn't recall any book about dreams.
None? Could it really be that she remembered incorrectly?
"Forget it; I'm not looking anymore." It seemed that dream had affected her deeply. "I won't read today; I'll go keep my mother company. You can tidy this place up."
And with that, a certain culprit floated away...
Leaving Liu Lvy alone amidst a room full of books scattered around as if they had been ransacked.
Madam Ouyang was not in the room, and Ouyang Zixin felt frustrated after running all this way, realizing that her mother was definitely not there at this time.
"Slap..." She hit her forehead and secretly regretted it. It was just a dream; how could it have confused her thoughts so much?
However, before Ouyang Zixin could reflect on herself, she suddenly gasped, bent over to rub her forehead, and squatted down, remaining motionless.
The guards in the shadows were puzzled. They could guarantee that the young lady had not been attacked. Just as they hesitated about whether to reveal themselves and check on her, Ouyang Zixin moved...
"Mom, that hurts!"
Uh... After Ouyang Zixin raised her head, the guards finally understood why Miss Bai had been squatting there for so long without moving.
"Fortunately, no one saw me. Otherwise, slapping my own forehead until it hurts would be so embarrassing." Ouyang Zixin looked around to ensure no one had witnessed her blunder before quickly leaving.
"Miss has a handprint on her forehead..." Should they remind her?
"Miss thinks no one saw." To remind her would be equivalent to saying—Miss, we all saw it.
Thus, Ouyang Zixin unknowingly walked around the residence with a handprint on her forehead. Strangely enough, not a single person spoke up to remind her.
Until—
