"You can't even protect yourself, and you're still thinking about others?" He Jun turned to glance at Liu Hua. "Their matters are internal to our police station. How I handle it is not your concern; you should make other requests."
"I only have this one request," Zhang Qiu said, reaching out to grasp He Jun's hand tightly. "Do not deal with them."
"You should agree to him," Wang Jinghan urged from the side. "Have you forgotten what the doctor said? This is your nephew!"
He Bureau stared intently into Zhang Qiu's eyes. This kid had a good heart, but his actions were reckless. He Jun recalled when he first joined the police force, filled with ideals and passion for serving the country. Back then, he was diligent and never relaxed in his work, eventually becoming the deputy Director at the local police station. But what about Liu Hua and these young people? They were neglecting their duties and doing things that violated principles. What was even more infuriating was that his own nephew wanted him to let them off.
The air seemed to freeze at that moment as the hospital door was pushed open again. Several burly men with dragon and tiger tattoos on their arms appeared in the room, making it feel even smaller. Wang Jinghan and Jiang Xue looked over, and He Jun turned around upon hearing the commotion, frowning as he pointed at them angrily. "Who are you people?"
Liu Hua and another officer quickly stepped between He Jun and the burly men, drawing their stun guns. The police stun guns crackled with electricity, blue sparks jumping between the electrodes as a long-haired man with a scar on his face stepped out from behind the burly men, coldly looking at Liu Hua and the other officers. "What do you want?"
"What do you want?" Liu Hua retorted. These people clearly looked like gang members; they might know Zhang Qiu was here and had come to finish him off. Otherwise, why would so many tattooed men be here?
Scarred Face sneered, "Is it illegal to visit patients in a hospital?"
Liu Hua felt threatened. "You’re probably not here just to see a patient."
"Zhang Qiu!" Zhang Qiu, lying in the hospital bed, shouted, "I know them; let them come over."
"What?" Liu Hua turned back to Zhang Qiu with concern.
"I know them; let them come over," Zhang Qiu repeated. Through the crowd, he spotted Abiao's familiar face.
"Can I come over now?" Abiao asked as he walked directly toward Zhang Qiu. Liu Hua exchanged glances with another officer and stepped aside, but He Jun still blocked the way.
Abiao tried to move to the left but was stopped by He Jun's outstretched hand. Abiao sized up the middle-aged man blocking him: gray short-sleeved shirt on top, black trousers below, and leather shoes on his feet—he looked like an ordinary middle-aged man. However, Abiao sensed an unfriendly aura from him.
"You must be Zhang Qiu's father; everyone calls me Abiao. I'm his friend and came to see him after hearing he was injured."
"I'm his uncle; you seem well-informed," He Bureau said as he stepped aside to let them pass while eyeing those who claimed to be Zhang Qiu's friends meaningfully.
Abiao paused slightly; no wonder he felt awkward standing in front of this middle-aged man—he was Zhang Qiu's uncle. Abiao knew that Zhang Qiu's uncle was Police Chief Wang Guodong, but seeing him now felt quite ordinary; he was nothing like what he had imagined.
In Abiao's mind, Police Chief Wang Guodong should have been broad-faced with a round belly, imposing and dignified, always accompanied by fully armed officers. But He Jun? He wore plain clothes and had a slightly plump figure, looking like an average office worker. The only difference was his sharp eyes.
"Biao Ge, you're here." Zhang Qiu tried to sit up from the bed, but Abiao stepped forward and pressed him down, saying, "Don't move, just lie down."
Jiang Xue brought a chair from the side. Abiao sat down without hesitation, looking at Zhang Qiu and then at He Jun, saying, "I heard you were injured, so I came to see you."
"Thank you."
The atmosphere became a bit awkward as no one spoke, just exchanging glances. He Jun cleared his throat and said, "Zhang Qiu, take care of your injury. Don't cause any more trouble. I'm leaving now. I'll settle the money later; as long as your parents can hold out, that's all that matters. I'm off!"
He Jun turned to leave, and Zhang Qiu quickly shouted, "Uncle, what about Liu Hua's situation?"
"Until the results are out, continue fulfilling your duties!" He Jun left that remark before striding away. Zhang Qiu reflected on his uncle's words and apologetically said to Liu Hua, "I'm sorry for dragging you into this."
Liu Hua shook his head with a smile, "It's nothing. Whether or not there's a formal position is just for show. If it doesn't work out, I can always find something else to do."
"I'll think of another way to convince him." Zhang Qiu lightly bit his lip, knowing that his uncle wasn't easily swayed. He added, "If it comes to that, White Day Fire welcomes you; the salary won't be less than what a Police Officer gets."
Liu Hua smiled in response to Zhang Qiu. Noticing the questioning look in Abiao's eyes, he explained while also introducing: "This comrade is called Liu Hua, responsible for my guard during my hospital stay. He took the risk to let me out to save Jiang Xue, but unfortunately, my uncle found out."
Abiao stood up and extended his hand, saying, "Thank you on behalf of Zhang Qiu."
Liu Hua hesitated about shaking hands; the scar on the other person's face gave an unsettling impression. Considering he might lose his job and possibly end up working at White Day Fire, which could be connected to this person, Liu Hua still shook the offered hand and smiled lightly, saying, "You're welcome; Zhang Qiu is also my friend."
The gratitude towards Liu Hua was brief. Abiao sat back down and looked at Jiang Xue, who was dirty and had messy hair, saying, "You've met a good man."
"Yes, Biao Ge, I'm very happy." Jiang Xue smiled sweetly, her gaze towards Zhang Qiu filled with affection.
Abiao lifted the blanket to check on Zhang Qiu's injuries and said, "You've got some serious wounds; you need to take good care of them. Don't worry; no one will disturb you here. I've brought these people specifically to protect you."
Beside them, Liu Hua wanted to say they were there too but swallowed the words upon seeing the intimidating figures around them. After all, there was no way for Zhang Qiu to escape; having more people around provided extra protection in case someone sought revenge against him.
"Biao Ge, I acted on my own again this time." Zhang Qiu observed his reaction; he still remembered how upset he had been last time when he took matters into his own hands.
"Acting on your own is fine; through this incident, I've seen clearly who you are. You were willing to get caught just to protect your brothers in a crisis—just this alone shows promise. Since I've chosen you, how you handle things is up to you; I won't interfere too much. However, as someone who's been through it all before, I must remind you that times have changed. Out here in the world is all about making money and living well; just don't end up with nothing in the end."
"Alright, I understand, thank you, Brother Biao."
"This is both my intention and Brother Leopard's intention; he asked me to come and check on you first. Brother Leopard is on the floor above; he'll come down shortly."
"What happened to Brother Leopard?"
Abiao smirked, revealing an unpleasant smile, and said, "Don't worry, Brother Leopard is fine. He appreciates you, and you care about him. I really can't figure out the two of you."
Zhang Qiu replied, "He is my mentor."
"A mentor in the underworld?"
"Yes, a mentor in the underworld." Zhang Qiu continued, "So why did Brother Leopard come here?"
"The boss is hospitalized."
Seeing Abiao's calm demeanor, Zhang Qiu asked, "Meng the Boss?"
"Yes, it's Meng the Boss. Meng the Boss is getting old; his health isn't good, and the doctor's outlook isn't optimistic. If something really happens, Beilan County will be thrown into chaos. All stability will be disrupted, so I actually admire your boldness. That Lin Tao guy has been eyeing things for a while; it's time to warn them."
Abiao instinctively pulled out a cigarette and put it in his mouth. The big guy standing behind Abiao leaned down to bring a lighter to his lips, but Abiao put down the cigarette and shook his head with a smile, saying, "Damn it, I almost forgot I'm in a hospital."
Abiao added, "I heard that Rui Rui was also arrested; how is she?"
"She was injured too; she came here before but has now been taken back to the police station."
"What about your uncle?"
"He'll get at least six months." Zhang Qiu recalled his uncle's words about group fighting: at least six months in prison; your life is over.
Abiao asked, "Are you in the same situation?"
"I am too."
"Isn't he going to help you?"
"I understand my uncle's character. He won't waver on such significant issues. However, I really admire him; having Police Chief Wang Guodong is a blessing for everyone in Beilan County."
Abiao disagreed, saying, "It might be our nightmare."
Zhang Qiu shrugged, and Abiao continued, "When you come out, the White Day Fire will still be under your management. And Rui Rui, I'm waiting for you all to return. The reforms you implemented at White Day Fire are highly regarded by Brother Leopard and me; the future belongs to you young people."
Abiao stood up to leave, and Zhang Qiu asked, "Biao Ge, aren't you waiting for Brother Leopard here?"
"I need to go back and keep an eye on things. With the boss in critical condition, when Brother Leopard arrives, Third Brother will come too, and Scorpion will also show up. Almost all the higher-ups of the organization are rushing to the county hospital; this is the weakest moment. It's already bad enough; we can't afford any more mistakes."
"Yang Yu is with the Brothers at White Day Fire."
"Okay, I understand."
Abiao left, and four burly men with dragon and tiger tattoos on their arms stood by the door—two outside and two inside. People passing by avoided them.
