Chapter Sixty-Nine: The Arrow is on the String, It Must Be Released
The phone was still on speaker mode, and Liu Fangfei could hear every word from the Editor-in-Chief clearly. She looked at her father with anticipation, hoping he could step in to save the News Agency. After all, she felt a deep sense of responsibility for the crisis facing the News Agency.
After listening to the Editor-in-Chief, Liu Father did not hesitate to say, "I deeply appreciate your help to my daughter, and I sympathize with your situation. However, I cannot assist you with your request. If there are objections to how things are being handled, you may resort to legal means; I believe there will be a fair resolution."
"Ha ha, I understand." The Editor-in-Chief suddenly sneered and said, "You let me publish the report, and when something goes wrong, you all distance yourselves from it. I really misjudged you." With his last hope shattered, he slammed the phone down in anger, causing it to shatter into pieces. The Editor-in-Chief slumped in his chair, his hands hanging limply at his sides, his vacant eyes staring blankly ahead as he muttered repeatedly, "When the cunning rabbit dies, the hunting dog is cooked..."
The phone suddenly went silent. Liu Father turned in surprise to look at Liu Fangfei and asked, "Fei Fei, did you ask the Editor-in-Chief to publish that report?"
"I didn't." Liu Fangfei cried out in grievance. The Editor-in-Chief's final words pierced her heart like needles. She was unaware that Zhang Qiu had called the Editor-in-Chief, who mistakenly believed it was someone powerful behind Liu Fangfei that had made the call, prompting him to publish the report.
In Liu Fangfei's eyes, the Editor-in-Chief was so noble for helping her out of a sense of justice. Yet she felt deeply guilty for not being able to help him in return. When the Editor-in-Chief made his request, Liu Fangfei realized her father would not agree to help; she understood her father's predicament. In his position, one must tread carefully and avoid giving others any opportunity to exploit the situation.
Liu Father also felt quite uncomfortable; this matter should have been over. Yet somehow it had resurfaced. Although it was the Editor-in-Chief's decision to report it, who could prove that Liu Father had not exerted pressure? Even more strangely, the Editor-in-Chief's words clearly indicated that he had been instructed by Liu Father to publish it. Could it be that someone really wanted to use this incident against him?
Liu Father fell into deep thought and after a while walked straight into his room. Liu Fangfei followed him inside. Liu Father said, "Fei Fei, I'll be with you in a moment; I just need to finish up some work first."
Liu Fangfei nodded; he noticed a subtle change in his father's expression but felt helpless to assist him. Liu Fangfei exited the room and gently closed the door behind him.
On his way back to his room, Liu Fangfei suddenly realized he should tell someone about this news. He ran through the living room back to his room, flopped onto his soft bed, picked up his phone, and dialed a number.
At the East City Barbecue Restaurant across from Beiluan No. 1 High School, six people—Zhang Qiu, Yang Yu, Gao Zhi, Wang Zhengxiang, Zhao Pingchuan, and Yao Yu—were gathered around a large round table. Several large iron plates were placed on the table, filled with various skewers, and the used sticks were scattered haphazardly. A nearby beer bottle still had droplets of water on it.
Zhang Qiu wanted to discuss something important with them. He had also called Yang Yu over, considering that they would inevitably interact frequently in the future, so it was better to get to know each other and deepen their relationships.
Although Yang Yu did not have high hopes for the people Zhang Qiu had chosen, he decided to support him regardless. It had always been this way in the past, and it would continue to be so now.
When Zhang Qiu saw that everyone had eaten enough, he spoke up: "I want to develop my influence at Beiluan No. 1 High School. I called you here because I hope you will join me in this endeavor. What are your thoughts? Feel free to speak your mind without reservation." He observed everyone's reactions.
Wang Zhengxiang was the first to respond, saying, "I'm with you, I support you."
Zhang Qiu nodded and looked at the other three. "You all should share your opinions too; don't hold back."
"Brother Qiu, I think developing our own influence is quite challenging. First of all, Beiluan No. 1 High School is known for its high graduation rates; students are focused on their studies. Even if some are willing to join us, there won't be many. Moreover, a new organization is something the school wouldn't want to see, and existing factions wouldn't want this situation either." Zhao Pingchuan's direct comments hit the nail on the head; he had many friends and understood various aspects. He had heard of someone trying to develop their own influence only to be crushed by both the school and larger student factions.
Zhang Qiu looked at Zhao Pingchuan with approval; he indeed had a deep understanding of things, and bringing him on board was a wise choice. Zhang Qiu continued, "Zhao Pingchuan is right. However, I have my own solutions regarding the school as long as we don't go too far. The other student factions are what we need to pay attention to."
Zhang Qiu had already conducted a thorough analysis of several student factions within the school. First of all, the group of First Year students would definitely not confront the seniors directly; they would likely appear in a supportive role, so this group could be disregarded.
Secondly, while the Sophomore faction might have the guts to confront the seniors directly, Zhang Qiu understood that they had always been at odds with the seniors and would not unite with them against him.
As for the seniors, they were already engaged in conflict with Zeng Fan and Song Weidong's factions. It was unclear whether Song Weidong was genuinely intimidated or had ulterior motives; his attitude was rather ambiguous. After considering everything, Zhang Qiu realized that Zeng Fan posed the greatest obstacle. He had already had an unpleasant encounter with Zeng Fan that escalated to disciplinary action. Without resolving issues with Zeng Fan, Zhang Qiu knew he wouldn't have an easy time over the next couple of months—even for the sake of preparing for college entrance exams.
The current situation was tense; it was time to take action.
