This female demon is known as "China's Most Notorious Femme Fatale."
To make money, she harmed 300,000 innocent children in China.
She amassed a fortune of 15 billion through a brand of infant formula, which also turned countless children into "Big-Headed Dolls."
Many young people in China today may remember her advertisements from their childhood. I wonder how many of you have actually consumed her products?
Yet, this very demon, sentenced to life imprisonment, has had her sentence reduced multiple times and is about to be released.
What has become of the children who were turned into "Big-Headed Dolls" by her actions?
This female demon is named Tian Wenhua.
Born in 1942 in a small mountain village in Hebei Zhengding County, she graduated from Zhangjiakou Agricultural School in 1966 and began working as a veterinarian at Shijiazhuang Dairy Farm. Coming from a poor family, she understood the value of opportunity and was exceptionally capable.
Through her hard work, she became the deputy director of the Shijiazhuang Dairy Factory by 1983.
After the retirement of the old factory director in 1987, 45-year-old Tian Wenhua took over as the head of the factory. Shortly after assuming her position, she transformed the dairy factory into Sanlu Group.
Around 1993, Sanlu successfully developed a formula for infant formula that mimicked breast milk and priced it at 18 yuan per bag.
Compared to the imported milk powder from abroad, Sanlu's products were much cheaper, leading many people to call Sanlu a "conscientious enterprise." Its market share increased year by year, and it maintained the top sales position in the national milk powder market for 15 consecutive years.
Tian Wenhua was also referred to as the "Queen of China's Dairy Industry," with sales reaching as high as 6 billion in its peak year.
However, as competition in the market intensified, she decided to lower costs to capture more market share. She initiated a model where farmers raised the cows, and the company would then purchase the milk uniformly.
Although this idea seemed good, many unscrupulous dairy farmers diluted the milk with water to increase their profits, severely diluting the protein content in the milk powder.
As a result, the protein content in the milk powder fell significantly below standards. Tian Wenhua then thought of adding Melamine to the milk powder to artificially boost the protein levels, allowing it to pass inspections.
However, Melamine is an industrial chemical typically used to make flame retardants or formaldehyde cleaners. If ingested by humans, it can lead to kidney stones and, in severe cases, cause hydronephrosis or kidney failure.
Yet, for the sake of profit, Tian Wenhua chose to harm others.
In 2004, there was an unfortunate incident in Anhui involving a "Big-Headed Doll" that died, but these negative reports were suppressed by Sanlu Group's public relations efforts.
It wasn't until 2008 that the increasing number of "Big-Headed Doll" cases across the country drew attention.
The cause of all these cases was Sanlu Milk Powder. After doctors tested the milk powder, they discovered that it contained non-edible Melamine at levels exceeding safety standards by 500 times.
Following an immediate national safety incident response, inspections revealed that out of 491 batches from 109 companies, 22 companies and 69 batches tested positive for Melamine.
Subsequent statistics indicated that approximately 300,000 children were victims of this incident, all due to the selfish interests of a few individuals.
On January 22, 2009, 66-year-old Tian Wenhua was sentenced to life imprisonment after a court trial, but she exhibited good behavior while incarcerated and received three reductions in her sentence.
By 2016, Tian Wenhua's sentence was changed to 15 years and three months, and she may be released soon.
People's original intentions can change; the young Tian Wenhua likely never imagined that she would later commit acts that would provoke widespread outrage for the sake of profit.
I wonder if she remembers her childhood self now.
But I think she probably does not. Those who have made mistakes often first think about how things would have been better if they had not acted that way or regret not having done something differently.
Do not overestimate or underestimate human nature.
