"Chen Lan, why did you betray us? Haven't we treated you well enough?" Madam Zhou questioned loudly, losing her usual composure.
"We treated you like our own daughter and entrusted the entire group to you. How could you do this to us?" I scoffed.
"This is your idea of treating Zhou Jinhua well? Forcing him to marry the daughter of his father's murderer?"
"You were able to frame my father back then, and now I can bring you down." The faces of the Zhou couple turned pale, and Zhou's Father pointed at me in terror.
"You are the daughter of the Wang family?"
"Yes, thank you for handing over the the Zhou to me; otherwise, I wouldn't have found evidence to take them down so quickly."
"You took away the thing I cared about most, so I can only repay you in kind." The Zhou couple fell into a dead silence after hearing my words.
Madam Zhou suddenly screamed in a frenzy. "Chen Lan, please spare my son; he truly loves you."
I didn't look back and walked away, leaving Madam Zhou's cries echoing in the prison.
---
I confronted Zhou Jinhua. I told him everything about how the Zhou couple forced my parents to death and my plan for revenge against the the Zhou.
Zhou Jinhua's expression changed repeatedly before he fell into silence. I thought he would lash out at me or cry, but he simply held my hand and pressed his head against my abdomen.
"Lanlan, is it all just scheming between us?" His voice was hoarse as I coldly pushed him away.
"Zhou Jinhua, I have never loved you because I would never fall in love with the son of my enemy."
Zhou Jinhua suddenly pushed me away, his eyes red as he shouted. "Chen Lan, you have been lying to me!"
He took off the ring and threw it at my face before rushing into the pouring rain of the night.
Then I heard a loud crash outside, and Zhou Jinhua lay in a pool of blood. His face was turned towards me, covered in blood, his mouth struggling to open and close.
His lips formed the words. "I love you, Lanlan."
Zhou Jinhua's death was ruled an accident. The truck driver was found fully responsible for driving under the influence. However, due to his intoxication and lack of clarity, he was only sentenced to eight years.
After Zhou Jinhua's death, I began a new life. I ran a company that was thriving. People introduced me to blind dates, but I rejected them all. I found it hard to forget Zhou Jinhua. They all said I was infatuated; such people are the most trustworthy in business.
Eight years later, I stood before his tombstone, gently touching the photo on it. I dreamt of him every day, recalling the past, my heart aching like a knife wound. I mourned his death but also felt grateful for it. If it weren't for his death, I would never have had the chance to destroy the the Zhou.
But I... can never forget the scene of my parents' tragic deaths.
In the middle of the night, I was awakened by a nightmare, cold sweat soaking my back, making my body feel icy.
My adoptive father urged me to let go, but how could I?
He said that everything I have now was given to me by Zhou Jinhua, and I should move on.
But what I wanted was never these things.
What I wanted was for my parents to come back to life!
It was for the the Zhou to pay with blood for their debts!
Now that I have avenged my great grievance, I find no joy in it.
"Zhou Jinhua, thank you."
"Thank you for giving me the opportunity to destroy the the Zhou."
"But I'm also sorry for you; I was insincere and used you."
I crouched in front of the tombstone, whispering softly.
The only response was the howling wind passing by.
"Boss, someone is coming."
The butler said quietly behind me.
I turned to look, and a ragged man stood not far away.
It was the Drunk Man from back then; today was his release day.
I picked up a suitcase and said lightly, "This is the agreed 5 million."
