My voice choked, and my eyes were filled with disappointment.
When Zhou Jinhua saw me, his eyes lit up, but then he quickly looked guilty. I slowly walked down the stairs and placed the book in his hands. "This is the Go Game Anthology you gave me. I'm returning it to you. I will never trust you again."
Zhou Jinhua held the book, looking anxious. "A Lan..."
He wanted to explain, but I turned and went back upstairs. The butler stopped him, and he could only stand downstairs, watching helplessly as I left.
After that, I remained cold and indifferent towards him. Sometimes I didn't see him at all, and when I did, I would ignore him. One day, he came to my house again.
Foster Mother received him: "Zhou Young Master, A Lan is going abroad and won't be coming back."
"What?" Zhou Jinhua looked shocked.
His lips moved, but in the end, he said nothing and left. Foster Mother walked over to me and softly said, "A Lan, that boy Zhou Jinhua likes you."
I closed the book and replied calmly, "I know."
Foster Mother sighed, "Then you..."
I smiled lightly, the corners of my mouth lifting. The news of my upcoming trip abroad acted as a catalyst, hastening Zhou Jinhua's decision-making process. I didn't give him much time to hesitate; he had to make a choice.
The news of me going to school to handle my leave of absence spread quickly. Suddenly, Zeng Jia barged in with a mocking tone: "Chen Lan, are you really going abroad?"
I turned my back to her and said nothing.
Zeng Jia walked in front of me, her eyes scrutinizing me. "Will you come to our wedding?"
I looked up at her, a slight smile on my lips. "I won't be attending."
Zeng Jia frowned. "Why not?"
I slowly approached her, still smiling. "Because you're not sincere."
Zeng Jia's expression changed, anger flashing across her face. "Chen Lan, who do you think you are to say that to me?"
I looked at her innocently. "Isn't it true? You flirt with Zhou Jinhua while claiming to like someone else. Zeng Jia, you're the worst person here."
Zeng Jia was caught off guard by my words, becoming flustered.
"Chen Lan, shut up!"
I let tears fall, feigning innocence. "Zeng Jia, why do you have to treat me this way?"
Zeng Jia's face turned pale with rage; she hated my pitiful expression the most.
"Chen Lan, if you weren't pretending, you might have some threat. But you love to play the victim. You know Zhou Jinhua likes me, yet you insist on putting on a sad face to gain his sympathy!"
"Zeng Jia, what are you doing?"
Zhou Jinhua's voice rang out, and Zeng Jia's expression froze.
I looked at Zhou Jinhua with tear-filled eyes; he paused for a moment before quickly walking towards me.
"A Lan, what's going on?"
Zeng Jia spoke first: "Jin Hua, don't misunderstand; it's Chen Lan who..."
Zhou Jinhua ignored her and just looked at me.
I wiped my tears and softly said, "It's nothing; I'm just not good enough."
Zhou Jinhua looked at Zeng Jia with suspicion.
Zeng Jia grew anxious. "Zhou Jinhua, are you doubting me?"
Zhou Jinhua remained silent; his gaze said it all.
I stopped speaking and continued to cry in silence.
Zhou Jinhua was flustered. He opened his mouth, wanting to comfort me, but he didn't know what to say. I stepped forward and gently tugged at his sleeve. "Zhou Jinhua, can I attend your wedding?"
Zhou Jinhua's pupils constricted, and he instinctively shook off my hand. "A Lan, you..."
Zeng Jia could no longer hold back her anger. She pulled Zhou Jinhua and exclaimed, "Zhou Jinhua, are you crazy? She's about to leave, and you're still thinking about her!"
Zhou Jinhua was enraged by Zeng Jia's words. He shot her a fierce glare before turning to leave. I knew that the last bit of trust Zeng Jia had in Zhou Jinhua had completely shattered.
Watching their retreating figures, a slow smile crept onto my lips.
