In the early morning, as she pushed open the door, the weather was clear and the breeze was gentle. Taking a deep breath of fresh air, Liu Qingxi felt wonderful at the thought of soon seeing Liu Qingyan, whom she hadn't seen for many days.
Humming a tune, she began to prepare breakfast.
Since she was going to see Kid, delicious food was a must. That foodie would only be in a good mood with tasty treats, sigh!
She simply cooked some porridge, drank a bowl, and quickly tidied up the snacks she had prepared in advance, mainly Dried Meat.
After spring began, she had gone up the mountain several times but hadn’t harvested much compared to before the New Year. She wondered if the animals had become smarter; in total, there were only a few wild game pieces, all turned into Dried Meat by Liu Qingxi.
There were spicy ones with chili and plain ones without.
As for other soups and broths, although Liu Qingxi wanted to bring them along, it was indeed inconvenient. Even if she took them on such a long journey, they would have cooled down long ago.
At the village entrance, a middle-aged man sat on an Ox Cart, singing their unique mountain songs while the ox leisurely grazed on the tender shoots by the roadside.
In the distance, a girl dressed in light yellow clothing had her black hair not tied into two braids as usual but rather elegantly styled up. After all, today she was going to Biqi Town; braids were reserved for work.
Her hair draped over her shoulders danced in the wind, carrying a hint of fragrance.
“Uncle Zhang, I’m really sorry to have kept you waiting!” The girl’s crisp voice was filled with joy and a touch of guilt for making someone wait.
“Not at all! Anyway, I don’t have anything urgent to do in town today. Qingxi, is this what you prepared for Qingyan?”
The girl was Liu Qingxi after leaving home, and the one driving the cart was Village Chief Zhang Wuliang.
Yesterday, upon hearing that Liu Qingxi was going to town to see Liu Qingyan, Zhang Wuliang thought it was perfect since he planned to buy some daily necessities himself. With an Ox Cart at home, it was just right to give her a ride.
As for the Ox Cart itself, there weren’t many in the village. During planting seasons, they still relied heavily on human labor. Recently, Zhang Wuliang had been financially more comfortable. Plus, Liu Qingxi's Construction Team held an important position; he earned wages every day.
Thinking this way, he gritted his teeth and made up his mind to buy one. He had just purchased a young Yellow Cattle that was in its prime and looked strong as it happily munched on tender grass.
“Village Chief, you made a great purchase with that cow; it will be very convenient from now on.”
“Indeed! When I bought it, I wasn’t too happy about it at first; I thought it would empty my pockets. But after buying it, I realized that spending money here is truly worth it; it's so convenient!”
The woman on the cart wore new clothes and had her hair neatly styled. With a smile in her eyes and a cheerful voice, she was none other than Liu Qingxi.
"Aunt, if the money is gone, we can earn it back. With this Ox Cart, we won't have to rely on the Village Chief to carry things back and forth when harvesting crops. I can't imagine how much effort that saves."
"That's true. It's just that times were tough before, but I still have to thank you. The head of the household hasn't done anything but still takes so much in wages; it makes me feel uneasy." Liu knew that Zhang Wuliang hadn't really done much.
Even when the big Kid was learning how to build houses, he didn't join in.
But Liu Qingxi never paid Zhang Wuliang any less than what the workers received.
Regarding the arrangement of this matter, Liu Qingxi knew that being able to quickly recruit the necessary number of people and efficiently select them was largely due to Zhang Wuliang's efforts.
As long as Zhang Wuliang was around, his ability to rally the villagers was unmatched by anyone else.
His value in the Construction Team lay in his ability to coordinate and cooperate effectively.
His presence allowed the big Kid to work together more harmoniously, and the Village Chief had provided her with tremendous support all along.
From the moment they were driven out of the Liu Family's door, during their most difficult times, only Zhang Wuliang extended a helping hand, even though Liu wasn't very willing at that time.
Yet that couldn't change how everyone had once avoided them like a plague but later came to their aid in their time of need.
Thinking about this, Liu Qingxi felt it was only right; she had merely given Zhang Wuliang a portion of what she deserved. Compared to the food they managed to gather from their hard lives, this was nothing.
"Aunt, what are you talking about? If it weren't for the Village Chief, I don't know when my Construction Team would be able to get built. The Village Chief has also given me a lot of advice; it's not a loss. When we expand later on, I'll have the Village Chief act as my chief steward, overseeing everyone's work arrangements."
"Hahaha, that sounds good! But I probably can't handle it; how could I manage so many people? Hehe!" Despite this, Zhang Wuliang remained in high spirits.
The Ox Cart may not be as fast as a horse-drawn carriage, but it was certainly quicker than walking.
On the cart, although there was no roof, the women and girls sitting on top chatted continuously.
"Qingxi, Qingyan has been sent to town by this Kid! When he returns to the village, he'll be so different from the other kids."
"Aunt, you're exaggerating! It's just about letting him study and understand things; you shouldn't boast like that or he might get lost!"
"I'm serious; if it weren't for the child's poor grades and our family's inability to support him, he should have been able to study for a couple of years." Her words carried a hint of melancholy.
Studying in town was something they wouldn't even dare dream of, yet Liu Qingxi, as an orphan girl, had achieved it.
"Aunt, don't worry, things will gradually get better," Liu Qingxi thought to herself.
At the moment, she could only maintain her own life, and her ability to help Zhang Wuliang and others was limited.
Currently, she couldn't find a way to help everyone get rich quickly, so what could she do? Just take it slow.
Unlike other transmigrated heroines with golden fingers who could lead everyone to wealth in an instant, she didn't have advanced technology to spark an industrial revolution.
What she could do was work steadily and take one step at a time.
"Look at me, what am I doing with the kids? Life is so comfortable now; I don't have to worry about food or clothing."
Liu suddenly realized that her words might sound a bit sour. She didn't mean it that way and was afraid Liu Qingxi would misunderstand, so she quickly changed the subject.
"By the way, I'm going into town today to buy some rice and flour. We're running low on salt at home, and I might as well pick up some soy sauce. Do you need anything? If you do, we can bring it back together; it's not easy to come to town."
"Sure, but Aunt might have to wait for me a bit. I want to check on Qingyan first."
Zhang Wuliang, who had been focused on driving the cart at the front, gradually started listening to the conversation between the two women.
At this point, he couldn't help but chime in: "What are we waiting for? We'll go with you to see Qingyan and also check out what the school looks like."
