Under the moonlight, the Bear-like Creature was clearly seen with its skin torn and bloodied, its back charred and matted.
He scoffed, "Is this what you call a handy tool?"
Behind him, a man in black stood anxiously, secretly regretting his actions as he looked at the Bear-like Creature on the ground.
The Superior Seal spoke with disappointment, and he immediately broke into a cold sweat, unable to help but smile bitterly. "This Bear-like Creature was captured by me after a life-and-death struggle, and I used secret medicines and various methods to tame it. It possesses immense strength, capable of tearing a wild boar in half in an instant. I never expected..."
He could not continue.
The first time the Bear-like Creature exerted its strength, it had intimidated the opponent but was not diverted by their tricks. Instead, it was drugged to confuse its sense of smell. He could only take the risk to track it down and lead it to the hiding places of several people. In his mind, no matter how much strength a human had, it could not compare to that of the Bear-like Creature. Eventually, they would be exhausted by it and unable to escape being crushed by its might. He never anticipated that the damned woman would discover its weakness and use fire against it, causing the Bear-like Creature to flee from the flames.
"Hmph," the Man Under the Silver Mask coldly snorted. "What you described is a head-on clash. In terms of brute force, this creature has some usefulness. Now, it seems we may have exposed ourselves instead of launching an attack..."
Hearing the Superior Seal's nonchalant words, the man in black broke into a sweat; his mission had failed, and he feared that good days were over for him.
Gritting his teeth, he raised his hand to throw out his hidden weapon.
With a sharp sound, something struck down the dart from his hand onto the ground. He looked up in shock and saw the Superior Seal's calm voice saying, "Don't rush; keeping this creature might still be useful."
Seeing the deep eyes of Silver Mask, the man in black expressed his gratitude. "I understand."
Then he took out something resembling a rice ball from his body and threw it towards the Bear-like Creature's location.
The Bear-like Creature caught a whiff of a familiar scent; its single eye sparkled with excitement as it eagerly grabbed it and stuffed it into its mouth. Shortly after, it began spinning in place as if energized, continuously making grunting sounds. Hearing a similar roar from the man in black, the Bear-like Creature suddenly quieted down and thoughtfully walked under a boulder to lie down.
Turning back, he hesitated for a moment but couldn't help but speak up nervously. "The Superior Seal may not know that in the end, it was that woman who ruined everything."
Upon hearing this, a cold glint passed through the Man Under the Silver Mask's eyes. "What do you mean?"
After the man in black recounted the situation at that time, he fell silent for a moment. However, the man in black could tell that his expression remained unchanged, yet his eyes were unpredictable.
When he spoke again, there was a hint of significance in his words, "So, this thing of yours is no longer useful?"
The man in black stiffened and did not dare to respond.
"Indeed clever," Silver Mask said, a slight curve appearing at the corner of his lips. "Although it was a reaction born out of desperation, it still shows remarkable intelligence..."
The man in black felt somewhat confused, thinking that even at this point, Superior Seal was still praising that woman!
To them, this woman was like a prickly hedgehog.
"Alright, you can rest now. The subsequent matters will proceed as originally planned. Aside from that woman, we won't need anyone else."
The man in black watched as the figure vanished into the dusk like a great roc spreading its wings, feeling secretly angry. Damn it! If it weren't for that Dead Woman's idea of using fire at a critical moment, he would have likely succeeded and claimed the reward by now.
In the dark and deep cave, only flickering lights resembling ghostly flames sparkled in the distance, illuminating the scene within the cave.
With the dim and weak light, one could see that the cave had steep walls hanging down. At its deepest point, mist swirled; cold winds howled through the deep and dark cavern. The cave branched out in all directions, with only a narrow path about a foot wide winding into the distance. On either side were protruding rocks with sharp edges, and the occasional sound of dripping water echoed eerily.
Mei Shuang could only move forward slowly. She noticed that the fog ahead grew thicker and thicker; once she stepped inside, she could no longer see the path she had come from. She turned around and widened her eyes in the ethereal void but saw nothing.
Suddenly, she heard something breathing heavily beside her, an inexplicable fear washed over her. She screamed and waved her hands to drive it away.
"Wake up, wake up..." A soft yet anxious voice came from beside her—Shijieyu.
Mei Shuang suddenly opened her eyes and saw her arms flailing wildly, with Shijieyu's anxious face in front of her.
She took a deep breath and wiped the cold sweat from her forehead. "It's nothing, just a dream."
At some point, the dark clouds had covered half of the moon, and everything around her faded into darkness. Even Shijieyu beside her became indistinct.
Mei Shuang recalled the scenes from her dream and took a deep breath, almost certain that place was getting closer.
Anriyan leaned against a nearby tree branch, watching Mei Shuang, who had just awakened from a terrifying dream. A hint of complex emotion flickered in his dark eyes.
It seemed she indeed had an obscure connection to this place.
Earlier, the powder that Kato had sprinkled contained a hypnotic ingredient. They say that real people do not dream, yet she murmured in her sleep. It was unclear what she had seen, but her terror was evident.
Each person harbored their own thoughts and could no longer sleep.
An hour and a half passed quickly, and everything remained peaceful.
Anriyan went over to take over for Cong Fei and Cong Yue. Mei Shuang stopped Shijieyu from going to help her and climbed down the tree with Anriyan.
Several of the campfires on the ground had already gone out. As Cong Fei and Cong Yue bent down to tend to them, Mei Shuang preemptively went over and extinguished the fire herself.
Cong Fei and Cong Yue exchanged glances without saying a word, then climbed up the large tree where Cong Fei had been earlier with Anriyan's help.
Once settled on the tree, Anriyan looked around before turning to Mei Shuang, who sat in the tree fork staring blankly at the embers of the fire below. "It's late; you should get some sleep. I can handle it alone."
Mei Shuang replied lazily, "I can't sleep anyway; chatting a bit is fine."
Anriyan advised, "We have to travel tomorrow, and your body is not like theirs. You should rest a bit."
Mei Shuang withdrew her gaze and replied unhappily, "Are you afraid I'll hold you back?"
The woman who had been indifferent to him throughout the journey was now acting out of character, somewhat sulking as she spoke to him. Anriyan found it strange; this was not typical of her.
In the faint moonlight, Mei Shuang looked up at him and asked, "What's wrong? Do I have something on my face? Why are you staring so intently?"
Anriyan did not look away due to Mei Shuang's words; instead, he leaned in closer. "You seem a bit off."
Mei Shuang crumpled the leaves in her hand and muttered angrily, "It's you guys who are off!"
Anriyan's expression darkened, clearly taken aback by Mei Shuang's sudden outburst. He couldn't understand why her mood had changed so drastically.
Seeing his bewildered expression only fueled Mei Shuang's anger further. She threw the crumpled leaves at him with force. Anriyan dodged just in time, but his face turned sour. "Miss Lin, what has gotten into you?"
Mei Shuang sneered, "Oh yes, I am on something. But Anriyan, do you dare say that the medicine wasn't given to me by you?"
Anriyan paused, unable to respond.
Seeing his silence only confirmed Mei Shuang's suspicions. She continued angrily, "I thought this journey would be fraught with dangers where you would play a role. Turns out I was wrong; all this time it was just 'Xiang Zhuang dancing with a sword aimed at Pei Gong.' Your purpose for coming here was actually me..."
Realizing that Mei Shuang had figured it out, Anriyan no longer hid the truth and admitted openly, "How did you know?"
"How did I know? Thanks to my dear sister Mei Ru. She has given me plenty of similar things before. Even if you're using powder this time, the taste can't be changed." Mei Shuang smiled coldly. "Anriyan, I understand your intentions; they are the same as those of the emperor of the Great Qin Empire. You calculated that I would definitely know this place, so you wanted to use your methods to make me find it quickly, right?..."
Listening to Mei Shuang's indignant words, Anriyan did not refute her. He gazed deeply at her and had to admit that she truly was as clever as the emperor of the Great Qin Empire had said. He nodded in acknowledgment, "Yes."
"Damn it," Mei Shuang thought about punching the seemingly refined yet infuriating face in front of her. "Do you know that using that stuff too much can damage a person's brain? Damn it, do you want me to end up a fool?"
Anriyan was unfazed by Mei Shuang's outburst. He gestured for her to calm down. "I know you've never trusted me. To put it bluntly, we were originally two parallel lines, but because of the Eastern Kingdom, we intersected. Although you pretended not to know me before, rest assured, I won't hold it against you for having helped the Eastern Kingdom. You also know that if I wanted to do something to you, you wouldn't be able to stop me..."
Mei Shuang felt a pang in her chest; damn it, this guy had laid everything out. However, she had to admit that Anriyan's words did have a chilling effect on her. In this desolate wilderness, it would be too easy for him to kill her.
"The powder is just helping you recall more things, making it easier for us to find our destination without harming you. We've faced numerous dangers along the way; you know we've been followed with the intent to stop us. Therefore, our time is running out..."
By the end, Anriyan's tone was heavy; it would be a lie to say he wasn't worried. Despite the meticulous planning, they had still been outpaced by others and placed in danger.
Mei Shuang couldn't help but say, "Even if I want to trust you, what guarantee do I have that the powder won't harm my body?"
Anriyan gazed at the fuming Mei Shuang, a hint of amusement flashing in his deep eyes. This woman's thoughts weren't that hard to guess. "Miss Lin, let me clarify for you: you're not really worried about the powder harming you, are you? You're probably more concerned that once we reach our destination, I'll kill you."
Mei Shuang didn't hide her thoughts. "Exactly. I'm just a weak woman all alone; who can guarantee my safety?"
Anriyan looked deeply at Mei Shuang. She felt uncomfortable under his intense gaze and turned her eyes away.
After a moment of silence, Anriyan spoke solemnly, "If I wanted to harm you, I could have simply stood by and watched when White Cat captured you."
