The Japanese actually came to China to commit crimes, and they killed so many people. Just thinking about it is infuriating. However, Zuo Yi...
Chu Feifan felt a lump in his throat, as if a fishbone was stuck there. Everything before him was blurred. Their friend, whom they had spent every day with, was dead, and they had no idea. But really, they had no idea at all! Or perhaps they just didn't want to believe it!
Captain Xing stroked his chin, feeling heavy-hearted. Although they had found evidence, they still couldn't locate where the Killer was hiding or what relationship he had with Jin'er. Why did he take Jin'er? Was he also a student at this school? However, that seemed unlikely since his head had once been completely burned. Living in the school would surely attract attention. Still, it couldn't be ruled out that he could be wearing a human skin mask, just like when he impersonated Zuo Yi.
"I have an idea! Let's go to the school and check all the student lists. We can compare past students with current ones to see who is missing; that person could be the Killer," Captain Xing suddenly said.
"That's easy enough. The school keeps records of students who suddenly drop out or take leave each year. We just need to find those who left at that time," Chu Feifan replied.
With a plan in mind, the two didn't dare waste any time and quickly headed to the school, knowing that every minute counted for Su Jin'er’s safety.
Meanwhile, Su Jin'er sat dazed on the cold floor, the faint smell of blood and decaying bodies still lingering in the air. However, she no longer cared; the sharp pains in her stomach had numbed her senses. Only the tears streaming down her face proved she was still alive.
Even when footsteps echoed outside the door, she showed no reaction, staring blankly at the ground as if her soul had already left her body and was floating in mid-air.
The sound of unlocking came from outside, but she remained motionless.
"It's already noon; you should eat something!"
He put on the human skin mask of Zuo Yi again and held two boxes of takeout food in his hands. However, Su Jin'er had no appetite whatsoever and didn't even glance at it.
"I know what you're thinking. I can answer your questions. Yes, Zuo Yi is dead; he committed suicide. But you could also say he was killed by Akasaka."
When Su Jin'er heard that Zuo Yi was dead, her tears flowed even more freely. Her expression shifted from vacant to sorrowful, nearly reaching despair.
"Can you stop crying? I hate it when women cry! Did you hear me when I told you to eat?" he shouted irritably. The real Zuo Yi would never have such a volatile temper; even if he did, he wouldn't direct it at her.
She remained sitting there, motionless.
He crouched down irritably, forcefully tearing off the plastic bag, pulling out the boxed meal, and roughly shoving rice into Su Jin'er's mouth with chopsticks.
Yet she did not eat a single bite.
He threw the food onto the ground and said, "I don't want you to die; otherwise, I would have killed you already. I was even thinking of letting you go! But if you want to starve yourself, I won't stop you."
After saying that, he simply lay down on the bed and went to sleep, completely unconcerned about the blood and white stains still on the sheets.
"Why not turn yourself in?"
She said softly.
"Turn myself in? If I say that as long as I'm not turning myself in, those idiot cops won't be able to catch me, would you believe it?"
Su Jin'er shook her head. She believed that Chu Feifan and Captain Xing would definitely find her and then catch the Killer. But why did her heart feel like it was being stabbed by countless knives?
"Do whatever you want. I'm going to sleep now. I warn you, don’t wake me while I’m sleeping; otherwise, I might just kill you directly, though that’s not my intention."
After saying this, he stopped talking and turned over, facing away from Su Jin'er. Before long, his steady breathing could be heard.
Su Jin'er walked to the side of the bed, quietly standing opposite him, looking at his peaceful sleeping face. Only at this moment did he seem like the real Zuo Yi. Although she had already guessed that Zuo Yi might be dead, when she actually heard that news, her heart still ached painfully.
Just as Su Jin'er was about to sit down and take a good look at him—more accurately, to look at this face that would soon disappear—he suddenly opened his eyes. Su Jin'er was startled and sprang up from the bed like a spring. However, she soon realized in surprise that the terrifying man had not truly woken up; he had merely opened his eyes and was staring blankly ahead without any expression.
Su Jin'er let out a sigh of relief, but she no longer dared to sit down and look at him. He now resembled a corpse that refused to close its eyes. Although it wasn't the first time she had seen this, it still felt terrifying. She moved the stool to a position against the wall opposite the bed, leaned her head against the wall, and took a deep breath. She was certain she was still around the school; she just didn't know where this place was or if they could find her.
Chu Feifan and Captain Xing were reviewing the records of students who had withdrawn from school.
"Fortunately, there were no withdrawals in March, and only a few students took leave. This makes the investigation much easier," Chu Feifan said.
"Look, among those on leave, there's actually a student named King Kong. What a surprise! But he only took a month off, so he can be ruled out," Captain Xing replied with a smile.
"So that leaves us with these three. However, these two have also only been on leave for a month. We just need to check if they are currently at school. As for the last one, we should focus on him since he hasn't returned to school yet."
"Alright, let's go!"
After some investigation, they found that both students who had taken a month off were indeed at school; only Liu Xiaoguang, who had taken half a year off, had not returned.
"Let's focus on Liu Xiaoguang."
However, after several hours of investigation, they discovered that Liu Xiaoguang did not live on campus, and no one knew where he resided. Everyone's impression of him was quite vague because he rarely attended classes and disliked interacting with others, always appearing distant. Nevertheless, he was very handsome.
Although they didn't gather much information, at least classmates mentioned that he didn't frequently skip classes but rather attended occasionally. This meant he likely lived nearby; they just needed to inquire at local inns or rental homes to find out where he stayed.
The two felt invigorated. Despite not having lunch, they were still full of energy. Captain Xing called back the officers who were still searching outside and instructed them to ask residents about Liu Xiaoguang's whereabouts without forcing their way in—politeness was essential for cooperation.
Fortunately, there weren't many residents in the area, so they should be able to complete their inquiries quickly.
Chu Feifan and Captain Xing went to the Lotus Festival to ask questions since many students who didn't live on campus resided outside. Most were couples, and during the day many students were in class, leaving many rooms unoccupied. However, when they arrived at an inn called Qingqing Inn, they received useful information. If Liu Xiaoguang was indeed the Killer, his current appearance should resemble Zuo Yi's; thus, they brought along Zuo Yi's photo.
The Boss is a woman, a very thin woman who looks somewhat malnourished, with a pale complexion, but she doesn't appear to be very old.
"Do you have this person staying in your establishment?" Captain Xing asked, pulling out a photo of Zuo Yi.
Without hesitation, the Boss replied, "Yes."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, because he is quite handsome, so I paid attention to him. However, this morning it seems he brought back a girl, and she hasn't come out since. The boy did come out to buy food and then went back upstairs."
"Thank you. Which room is he in? Can we go up to find him?"
"Of course. He’s in room 202. I find him quite strange; he looks like the kind of sunny boy who would rent a room but asked me to change his curtains to heavy black ones. That’s really odd!"
They ignored the Boss and headed straight upstairs. The hallway was narrow, only allowing one person at a time, so they ascended one after the other. This inn only had two floors, and the lower floor seemed unoccupied; it was likely that only the Boss was staying downstairs.
The two quietly made their way up. When they reached room 202, they pressed their ears against the door and listened but heard no sound. Captain Xing tried knocking on the door.
Inside, Liu Xiaoguang was sleeping but turned alertly at the noise, as if he hadn’t been asleep at all. His sharp gaze fixed on the door for a moment before he slowly turned his head to look at Su Jin'er, who was still sitting in the corner. Then he stood up and walked toward the door.
"Who is it?"
He deliberately asked in a hoarse voice.
Upon hearing this, Captain Xing immediately recognized that it must be Liu Xiaoguang inside, so they were prepared to apprehend him at any moment. They regretted not bringing the Boss with them but still said, "We're looking for someone; can you open the door?"
"Absolutely not!"
The person inside responded firmly.
Captain Xing and Chu Feifan exchanged glances, and Chu Feifan said, "Ayi, I know you're in there. Can we talk about this? Even if you really like Jin'er, there's no need to do it this way!"
"Keep pretending! I know you already figured out that I'm not Zuo Yi. If you truly care about Su Jin'er’s safety, I advise you to leave now. Otherwise, I will make you regret coming here."
"That's fine, but I want to speak with Jin'er."
"Don't try to negotiate. You already know where I live. Don't worry; I won't run away. When the time comes, I will turn myself in, so please leave now."
Turn yourself in?
They didn't believe it. They couldn't just leave like that, but since the hostage was in his hands, they had no choice but to comply. However, the two of them had no intention of leaving; instead, they hid nearby. It seemed that this wouldn't fool him.
"I know you haven't left. You can choose! Do you want to break in and find our corpses?"
This statement frightened Chu Feifan, who hurriedly said, "We'll leave immediately."
