Su Jin'er stood in the corner, looking at Chu Feifan with disgust. The corners of her mouth curled up slightly, revealing a somewhat sinister smile. For some reason, Su Jin'er found this smile attractive, but she knew very well that the person in front of her could not be Chu Feifan, as he would never show such a smile.
"Don't look at me like that; it makes me feel like I'm not a good person."
"Haha! That's funny. Just because I don't look at you like that, does it make you a good person?" Su Jin'er scoffed.
"At least that's what I believe."
"You killed so many people in such a cruel way, and you still call yourself a good person? You really overestimate yourself! And take off your human skin mask! It makes me sick to look at it."
The man paused for a moment and then said with a smile, "You're really clever! Clever to the point of being frightening. A woman like you truly makes men keep their distance! But I like you just the way you are." With that, he tore off the mask from his face.
Su Jin'er let out a sigh of relief. She had thought she would feel relieved once he revealed his true face, but when she saw the face beneath the mask, she nearly broke down.
Because that face was Zuo Yi's.
Su Jin'er looked at him in terror.
"Haha, scared, huh? Didn't expect it to be me!" His voice was identical to Zuo Yi's.
Su Jin'er's heart tightened suddenly; her eyes narrowed, and her pupils shrank as if trying to discern whether this person was truly Zuo Yi.
However, she quickly gave up because she couldn't tell if he was Zuo Yi or not.
"Why?" Her voice trembled as she weakly asked.
"Why not? Does killing require a reason?"
Su Jin'er looked up and glared at him fiercely; he was truly a psychopath.
"You must be cursing me as a pervert in your heart right now, right? Haha, I admit it, I am, but so what!" He stood up and walked to the bedside, then lifted the bed board to take out a round object wrapped in cloth. A strong smell of blood wafted out. Su Jin'er immediately recognized what it was, and her stomach churned as she covered her mouth and rushed to the bathroom to vomit.
"Haha, your tolerance is really low! I haven't even taken it out yet!"
Su Jin'er stood pale in the bathroom, watching him unwrap the cloth from the head like he was unveiling a piece of art. Her stomach churned again as the smell of blood intensified with the cloth being opened. Zuo Yi's expression grew more excited, and his eyes sparkled with delight when he saw the head.
When the head was fully exposed to the air, Su Jin'er smelled a foul odor and vomited again until she expelled everything she had eaten that morning. Her stomach continued to spasm, almost making her feel like she would vomit her insides out.
"What are you going to do?" she asked, trembling.
"This is something I've always wanted to do. You know how Mao Qiang died; I've seen human organs, but I've never truly seen a brain, so naturally, I want to take a look."
"You really are a pervert."
"That's right; I've already admitted it, so there's no need to repeat it."
Su Jin'er couldn't bear to look at the head, but her curiosity made her want to know who that person was, so she couldn't help but glance at it. That one glance made her completely collapse.
Because that person was none other than Tian Qing, the bespectacled boy from Hao Hongtao's dormitory. Although she had only seen him once, she remembered him because she didn't meet many people.
His eyes were wide open in disbelief at his own death. The thick glasses still rested on his nose, and his mouth was agape in shock.
It seemed that Tian Qing's wide-eyed expression frightened Zuo Yi. He cursed angrily and then punched Tian Qing in the eye. The eyeball that had already bulged out was pushed back into its socket by the punch, making his appearance even more terrifying.
Zuo Yi clenched his fists in anger as if facing not a head but a fierce monster. He threw the head on the ground and walked into the kitchen. Seeing him leave, Su Jin'er immediately locked the bathroom door; she knew what was about to happen next was something she did not want to witness.
Zuo Yi came out of the kitchen holding a bag of black substance, grinning as he looked at Su Jin'er through the locked bathroom door.
He knocked on the door forcefully and said, "You better open the door and watch the whole process, or the next thing you see will be Chu Feifan's head, slowly sawed open by me."
Su Jin'er slowly opened the door, fully aware that he could do it because he was Zuo Yi, Chu Feifan's best friend.
"That's more like it!"
He picked up the head that was still on the ground, laughing maniacally as he looked at it, then opened a package containing a complete set of surgical tools. Su Jin'er recognized them as her father's surgical instruments.
Zuo Yi picked up a sharp knife and plunged it into Tian Qing's eye socket. She initially thought no more blood would flow, but to her shock, blood gushed out, splattering on Zuo Yi's face and making his twisted expression even more terrifying.
Su Jin'er clutched her heart, wondering how the once gentle Zuo Yi could have transformed into this. This was not Zuo Yi, it couldn't be; he wouldn't become this twisted.
Tears streamed down her face, feeling as if her heart had died.
"You are not Zuo Yi, you are not him," Su Jin'er shouted, her voice hoarse.
Zuo Yi turned to look at Su Jin'er, who was slumped against the wall, and grinned menacingly. "No, I am not Zuo Yi. He died when Linyuan fell; he was already dead in that secret chamber."
Su Jin'er completely gave up. She knew there were not many people in that secret chamber, and he clearly knew that he was indeed Zuo Yi. But why? Why?
"Why? Why?" she asked weakly.
"There is no reason; don’t ask me why," he shouted, startling Su Jin'er.
Neither of them spoke again. Su Jin'er hugged her legs in the corner, tears continuously streaming from her eyes, while Zuo Yi sat on the ground, his chest rising and falling violently.
Time passed without either noticing. Eventually, Zuo Yi picked up the knife again and slowly shaved off Tian Qing's hair, revealing his pale scalp that had the color of a corpse.
Su Jin'er turned her head away.
"Turn around and look at me seriously. If you can't get past this, how will you be a doctor in the future?" Zuo Yi's voice was gentle. For a moment, Su Jin'er suddenly felt that he was no longer a terrifying killer but someone who wanted her to overcome her fears. However, this did not make her feel any fondness for him. Still, she obediently turned her head. He had completely shaved his head, but since he wasn't a professional, there were cuts on his scalp, resembling a baby's open mouth.
She wanted to take a deep breath, but all she inhaled was the metallic sweet smell of blood, which made her stomach churn even more.
"Although I'm not a professional doctor, I can help you overcome your fear. This is the only thing I can do for you right now. So take this opportunity to ask me anything you want, but don't ask me why I'm doing this."
Su Jin'er trembled as she asked, "Why did you kill Wang Fan?"
"I told you not to ask me why. There’s no reason. I can only tell you about the process of how I killed him."
"Hmph, the process? I can guess that without asking. I just want to know the reason."
Zuo Yi stopped his movements and looked at Su Jin'er with a murderous gaze. "Because he deserved to die."
"No one deserves to die or not die. Even if he truly deserved it, it's not up to you to decide, nor is it your place to kill him."
"Hmph! Law? Don't bring the law up in front of me. It's all just for show. If the law worked, would I have gotten this far?"
Su Jin'er frowned. According to his words, he was someone with a story and someone who had been bullied. But this person could not be Zuo Yi because the real Zuo Yi would never allow anyone to bully him.
So who was this person in front of her? Where had Zuo Yi gone?
Even though she suspected that he might not be Zuo Yi, he had been able to impersonate Zuo Yi for so long without the real Zuo Yi appearing. This meant that Zuo Yi must be in great danger; even if he wasn't in danger, he wasn't safe either. This made her heart tighten with anxiety. However, she did not intend to expose him; she didn't know what terrifying things he might do if she did.
At that moment, she truly believed that human hearts could be more terrifying than ghosts.
He pulled the knife out of the eye socket and then dragged a chainsaw from under the bed. This reminded Su Jin'er of "Saw," a movie she had only seen a little bit of, but just thinking about it sent chills down her spine.
In the moment she was lost in thought, he had already plugged in the chainsaw. After a deafening noise, she saw a human brain—the real brain—white and glistening, flowing down Tian Qing's bloodied face onto the bed. The mix of red and white made Su Jin'er feel dizzy.
"Can you please stop?"
"No, I have to see everything," he continued to grin menacingly.
"I'm begging you, please don't continue." Su Jin'er's lips trembled, her face pale as if she might faint at any moment.
He put down the knife and turned to Su Jin'er, saying, "Alright! But I have a condition."
Hearing that there was room for negotiation, she hurriedly asked, "What condition?"
"Take off your clothes."
Su Jin'er's body instantly turned cold. She glared at him fiercely, her hands tightly clenched, nails digging into her palms, with bright red blood dripping onto the pristine floor like thorny roses blooming beautifully yet carrying deadly poison.
