The basement only had one Morgue, and the hospital's Morgue was several times larger than that of the school. The only strange thing was why the door of the Morgue was directly facing the elevator; wouldn't that easily scare people? Or was this Morgue built to frighten people?
Su Jin'er pouted. The last incident nearly scared her to death. Although she didn't believe in demons, anyone would have some fear of dead bodies. Even though she was going to be a doctor and would see many more corpses in the future, at this moment, she was not mentally prepared.
As she stepped out of the elevator, she took a deep breath and then started coughing violently. Was it possible to smell the scent of death even before entering the Morgue?
She turned to look at the people beside her, who seemed unresponsive, as if only she could smell it. Perhaps it was just her imagination, she comforted herself.
Su Jin'er’s heart raced; she was actually very scared. The dim yellow light illuminated the narrow corridor, making it feel like entering a hellish underworld where countless evil spirits lurked in the shadows, waiting for an opportunity to strike. Her scalp tingled as if there were countless eyes in the darkness watching her.
Captain Xing had already obtained the key from the hospital staff. As he inserted the key into the lock, it clicked softly. Although the sound was faint, to Su Jin'er, it felt like thunder.
As soon as the Morgue door opened, a wave of cold air rushed towards them. She couldn't help but shiver, feeling as if her teeth were chattering. Since there were no lights on inside, they couldn't see what was inside; they could only see wisps of white mist swirling in front of them, resembling a celestial realm from a television show. However, while that realm should be filled with warm celestial energy, here it was more about the stench of death, and thinking about this made her tremble uncontrollably.
With a snap, the lights turned on, but this did little to alleviate their fear because the light was still dim yellow like that in the corridor. Although they could see what was inside clearly now, it still sent chills down their spines.
The Morgue was rectangular and quite long, approximately forty to fifty meters in length. Rows of body refrigeration units lined the walls, with cold air seeping out from their gaps like a hungry monster with a gaping maw, exuding a foul odor and waiting for prey to walk right into its mouth.
"How strange; this hospital isn't very large and doesn't have many patients. Why is there such a large Morgue?" Chu Feifan asked. Su Jin'er nodded eagerly; she also wanted to ask this question but hadn't dared to speak due to her fear.
However, Captain Xing merely shook his head and said, "Our job is just to investigate cases; we go wherever there are cases. If it weren't for this case, we probably wouldn't have had a chance to come here."
Captain Xing was right; the police's mission was to catch criminals and protect people's safety rather than investigate why a small hospital would build such a large Morgue. So they didn't ask further.
"With so many cabinets, how are we supposed to find anything? Are we really going to open them one by one?" said an officer named Xiao Liu, his teeth chattering.
Captain Xing turned back and glared at him. "Aren't you supposed to be a police officer? How can you do your job if you're this scared?"
"Boss... I'm not scared; I'm cold!" Xiao Liu shivered all over, his speech becoming slurred.
Su Jin'er glanced at him and realized his face had turned pale and his lips were purple; he was shaking uncontrollably.
Captain Xing initially wanted to say something, but suddenly seemed to remember something and said, "You go outside and wait for us!"
Xiao Liu, like a child who received candy, happily saluted and quickly ran out.
"Why is he so afraid of the cold? I’m also afraid, but not to that extent!"
Captain Xing sighed and said, "Actually, he wasn't like this before. It's just because of work that he has become this way. Let's split up and check every drawer carefully. We need to be thorough because the target is small—just an arm and a leg—so we must be meticulous."
After saying that, they began to act. Since Su Jin'er was a girl, they let her search in the middle section so that if any unexpected situation occurred, everyone could help her.
Captain Xing was at the very back; due to the overwhelming cold air, they could hardly see him, only a black shadow moving around.
The refrigerator had six compartments from top to bottom, but they could only open three of them for inspection. The upper ones required a ladder, so they decided to check the lower ones first.
Su Jin'er silently prayed for the deceased; although she didn't believe in Demon, it was a way to seek peace of mind. She trembled as she opened the first drawer.
Although she had mentally prepared herself, she was still startled by the sight of the corpse before her. The pale body was covered in white frost, and its bluish-purple skin glowed with a cold hue.
Fortunately, the corpse's eyes were closed.
She patted her chest to comfort herself. After the first time, she wouldn't be as scared anymore. Since she didn't find what she was looking for, she closed the first drawer and moved on to the second and third. Gradually, she became bolder; after all, they were just corpses of men and women. Once a person dies, there is nothing left—just a stinking shell. There was nothing to fear; death felt like falling asleep—just with less breathing and warmth, making it appear more terrifying.
Thinking this way eased her fear somewhat. However, just as she had calmed down, she was soon startled again by what she saw: a corpse with fresh blood that hadn't been processed yet.
"Ah!" She let out a small scream loud enough for everyone to hear, startling them all.
"What happened?" Chu Feifan rushed over for the first time. When he saw the corpse, he couldn't help but gasp.
The body was face down in the drawer; they could only see its feet. A layer of blood had pooled beneath it but had frozen into ice. The walls of the drawer were also stained with blood, even showing handprints as if someone had struggled while trying to escape. Since they couldn't see the deceased's face, they couldn't determine who it was.
"Come on, let's lift him out together," Captain Xing said as he attempted to pull the body out. However, as soon as he exerted force, he gave up because the corpse was frozen together with the blood below and couldn't be lifted out at all.
"Forget it; let's pull out the entire drawer instead."
Several people pulled the drawer out with force, and when they saw the body, they realized it was a headless corpse, with a jagged cut at the neck.
Su Jin'er took two steps back, her breathing becoming rapid.
"Why would the Killer do this?" Captain Xing said to himself as he looked at the body.
"What do you mean?" Chu Feifan asked.
"The Killer cut off the victim's head but made such a mess of blood here, and even deliberately created so many scratch marks. Don't you find that strange?"
"How can you be sure the Killer did that on purpose and it wasn't the victim who scratched themselves while struggling?" Chu Feifan questioned.
"The victim's head was completely severed; they were already dead. How could they struggle?"
"Well, it's also possible that the victim wasn't dead yet, and the Killer killed them here, which is why there are signs of struggle."
Captain Xing paused for a moment; he hadn't considered that possibility. He smiled and patted Chu Feifan on the shoulder, saying, "Not bad! You have great potential as a police officer."
"So, is this victim related to the previous cases?" Su Jin'er asked, her face pale.
"We don't know yet; maybe not! Let's leave it here for now. Xiao Liang, go have Xiao Liu call someone to take the body away while we continue searching."
Xiao Liang replied with a "Yes" and ran out, but soon returned with a look of terror on his face.
"What happened?"
"The elevator won't come down; we can't get out."
Everyone stood frozen in disbelief.
"What about Xiao Liu?"
"She has been waiting outside. Since she was close to the elevator, she kept an eye on the digital display. The number has been stuck on the third floor; it hasn't moved up or down. Even if no one was there, it should have stopped on the first floor. I didn't believe it, so I pressed the button, but the elevator is still stuck."
"We should go take a look."
Saying this, Captain Xing walked outside, as no one wanted to stay in the cold and terrifying Morgue, especially with that headless corpse, so everyone followed him out.
As a result, they stood in front of the elevator for seven minutes, but the elevator remained stuck on the third floor, not moving at all.
Fear quickly enveloped everyone; no one dared to speak, not even to breathe. The basement had only the elevator and no stairs, so the only way to get out was through the elevator. Now that it was broken, escaping seemed impossible. Moreover, to preserve the bodies, there were no windows here, and soon oxygen would become a luxury. More importantly, it was so cold here, and since it was night, surviving the night seemed impossible.
"We're done for; we're going to die here," Xiao Liang said, spreading his arms in a dramatic gesture.
"Shut your crow's mouth!" Jiang Jie glared at him angrily.
"This place is sealed so tightly that we can't even call for help. We can only wait for someone upstairs to notice the elevator is broken and come to fix it," Su Jin'er said.
"That's not right; this must be the Killer's doing. He wants to trap us all here," Captain Xing said gravely.
"If that's true, then that person must have been killed by the Killer too. But how would he know our movements?" Su Jin'er raised a question.
