“Zuo Yi, Officer Zhang, where are you?”
Chu Feifan shouted.
No one answered in the empty forest.
Having experienced several incidents in the woods recently, she felt fear at the sight of trees. She tightly grasped Chu Feifan's hand, her body trembling uncontrollably.
Noticing Su Jin'er's fear, Chu Feifan shone the flashlight into the forest and said, “We won’t go in. This forest isn’t large; we can just stand outside and take a look.”
“But what if something happens to them?”
At that moment, a faint sound came from the woods, sounding as if someone was in pain.
“Zuo Yi, is that you?”
“Feifan, it’s me. I’m injured,” Zuo Yi's weak voice came from within the trees.
The two forgot their fear and quickly ran into the forest. They found Zuo Yi lying on the ground, blood covering his hands, while Jiang Jie lay unconscious nearby.
“How did you end up here? You’re hurt!”
“It’s nothing, just a minor injury. First, get Officer Zhang back to the house,” Zuo Yi said, his face pale from blood loss, his white shirt soaked in blood.
“Feifan, you carry Officer Zhang; I’ll support Zuo Yi.”
Su Jin'er helped Jiang Jie up and placed him on Chu Feifan's back while assisting Zuo Yi as they made their way back.
Chu Feifan went outside to check the circuit breaker and found it had simply tripped. However, the lights inside had exploded. He had no choice but to go out and buy a new one to install. Once the lights were back on, they realized Zuo Yi had been stabbed in the abdomen with a dagger, blood flowing continuously as he lay on the couch.
"Let's hurry and take him to the hospital! We need to check if there are any internal injuries," Su Jin'er said as she gathered some materials to stop the bleeding.
"Okay, Officer Zhang is fine; she just fainted. Let's leave her at home for now and get him to the hospital immediately."
Su Jin'er suddenly felt a wave of helplessness. This Killer had changed his previous ways; instead of killing, he was now harming those around her.
After taking Zuo Yi to the hospital, the two sat in the corridor. The hospital was still very quiet, with few patients, perhaps because people often died there. The nurse's death did not cause panic, which relieved Su Jin'er somewhat. Remembering what had happened last time she was here sent a chill down her spine. She still couldn't understand how the blood in the corridor had disappeared or how the Killer had vanished. At that time, she was indeed alone in the corridor; who could have wiped away the blood?
"What are you thinking about?" Chu Feifan asked.
"I was thinking about how the Killer managed to kill the nurse that day. When I heard the scraping sound, it was right outside our door, but the restroom is quite far from there. How could he drag the body to the restroom and escape in such a short time? And why did the blood suddenly disappear? I just can't figure it out."
"If you can't understand it, then don't think about it. After all, it's a police matter, not yours. Just focus on how to keep yourself safe!"
"But this person is targeting me; how can I feel at ease? More importantly, he is hurting my friends instead of me. You know that hurts me more than if I were harmed myself."
"I understand, but we have no leads at all. Plus, we still don't know what happened tonight! So let's not rush; let's find out what happened tonight first!"
Su Jin'er frowned. Although there were indeed no clues, she was already certain that this person was someone close to her and knew a lot about her life. So far, the only people familiar with her were Chu Feifan, Zuo Yi, and Jiang Jie. However, none of them could be suspects! Could it be that someone was actually hiding nearby and watching her every day?
The thought of being watched daily sent chills down her spine and made her scalp tingle.
Chu Feifan thought for a moment and said, "However, I think this person might be someone close to us. Even if they aren't someone we see every day, they are definitely someone who knows you well. What do you think?"
Su Jin'er nodded repeatedly. "I was thinking the same thing earlier. But right now, it's just you guys around me—could it be you?"
"Uh! You can't suspect me! I'm sincere towards you; I swear on my life," Chu Feifan immediately raised his hand and solemnly swore.
"Alright, I was joking! But I really can't understand this! I wonder if our team leader has any clues; maybe he knows something!"
At that moment, the nurse pushed Zuo Yi out.
"Doctor, how is he?"
"He's fine. The wound is deep, but it didn't hit any vital areas, so there's no need to worry."
Su Jin'er let out a sigh of relief; no news is good news.
About an hour later, the anesthesia wore off, and Zuo Yi slowly woke up.
He struggled to sit up, his face still pale. He smiled and said, "I didn't expect that just a few days ago it was you in the hospital, and now it's me. Our lives are like a TV drama."
"Alright, don't move too much, or you'll tear the stitches," Su Jin'er pressed him down.
"I'm fine; I'm not that fragile. By the way, how is Officer Zhang?"
"She's okay; she just got knocked out. But what exactly happened to you two? One got knocked out and the other got stabbed?"
"Oh! When I told you I was going to check on Officer Zhang, I was actually going to go out. But then I thought it would be better to grab a flashlight first, so I went back to get one. When I came out, I noticed Officer Zhang wasn't outside. Then I saw a shadow and chased after it. I didn't expect that person to suddenly turn around and stab me before running away."
Su Jin'er frowned. "If that's the case, it means our power outage wasn't just a coincidence but something done intentionally. But where did it go wrong?"
"Can you stay here alone? I want to go back and ask Officer Zhang what happened."
When they returned home, Officer Zhang was already awake, sitting on the living room sofa talking on the phone. Seeing them come back, she said, "Alright, Captain Xing, they're back. I'll call you in a bit. Where have you been? Where's Zuo Yi?"
"He's in the hospital; he got injured but he's fine. What happened to you two? How did one get knocked out and the other get stabbed?"
Jiang Jie thought for a moment and said, "After I came out of the house, I went straight to the warehouse. Just as I was about to open the door, I suddenly heard footsteps behind me. So I turned around to look, but there was nothing there. I continued to open the door, and then the footsteps got louder. I cautiously took out my gun when suddenly a White Shadow flashed in front of me. I was startled; the White Shadow quickly moved into the woods behind me. I took out my gun and followed it, but as soon as I entered the woods, I got knocked out. However, before losing consciousness completely, I saw Zuo Yi running over and fighting with the person who knocked me out. After that, I don't know what happened."
"You mean you saw a White Shadow? What is that White Shadow? Did you see it clearly?"
"It looked like the Paper Man you mentioned before."
Su Jin'er closed her eyes, rubbing her forehead in pain. When will all of this end?
She had lost count of how many times she had asked that question.
"Is Captain Xing coming?" Chu Feifan asked.
"Yes, he said he would come over soon and also mention the nurse's Autopsy Report."
It was already ten o'clock, and none of them felt sleepy. They sat quietly in the living room. Jiang Jie kept blaming herself internally; the captain had sent her to protect Su Jin'er, but now it seemed like she was the one being taken care of. It felt a bit awkward, and she could only sit there in embarrassment.
Knock, knock.
The three of them instinctively stood up quickly, watching the door with vigilance.
"Open the door, it's me."
The voice of Captain Xing came from outside, and they all breathed a sigh of relief. Jiang Jie ran over to open the door.
Captain Xing looked exhausted, with dark circles under his eyes and stubble on his face, as if he hadn't rested for days.
"Captain Xing, are you okay?" Su Jin'er asked with concern.
"I'm fine, I'm used to it. Who will tell me what happened?"
Jiang Jie glanced at Su Jin'er and Chu Feifan, then recounted everything that had happened. Captain Xing frowned the entire time, taking out a cigarette from his pocket and lighting it. However, he only took one puff before putting it down again.
"That's how things are."
"The only thing we can be sure of now is that this person knows your habits very well, and not just Su Jin'er, but all of you. Even Xiao Jie is well understood." He sighed and continued, "It seems our opponent is really clever! However, one thing I still find strange is that after all this time, and with the weather getting hotter, where exactly would Killer have put Wang Fan's limbs?"
Right! How could they have forgotten this? The hotter it gets, the faster the body decomposes, so if he wants to preserve them, he must have a place that can freeze.
"Could it be in the Morgue?" Chu Feifan suddenly said.
Captain Xing shook his head and replied, "We've searched there; aside from a few unused bodies, there's nothing else."
"Then could it be in the hospital's Morgue?" he suggested again.
"Yes! How did I not think of that! Let's go check the hospital's Morgue right away."
The four of them quickly rushed to the hospital. Last time, due to an elevator accident, Su Jin'er nearly lost her life in the elevator. Several times the elevator had stopped directly on the first basement floor, and upon opening the door to see the word "Morgue", it almost scared her to death. Now that they were actually going there, she still felt her heart racing. Although she knew it was just a place for storing bodies, she couldn't shake off the fear that lingered in her mind.
