When she woke up again, it was already the next morning. Opening her eyes, she was greeted by a blinding white light. She blinked and propped herself up with her hands.
"You're awake?"
Beside her was Chu Feifan's gentle smile.
"Ah??" she exclaimed, suddenly recalling what had happened the night before.
"It's okay. You fainted not long before they returned, and they have already taken the body away."
Although she understood the situation, the thought of that body still caused a momentary lapse in her mind. Who was he? Why did the Killer kill him? Was it because he intended to kill her?
A series of questions flooded her mind; there truly was no moment of rest! Even in her dreams.
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing, I just don't understand why the Killer killed him. This person wanted to kill me, so logically they should be on the same side, but the Killer killed him. It's hard to comprehend!"
"I can explain your doubts." Captain Xing suddenly appeared at the door, followed by Jiang Jie and Zuo Yi.
Su Jin'er tilted her head to look at him. He had a bandage wrapped around his head, which looked quite funny. However, seeing that they were all fine put her at ease.
"The person who wanted to kill you is named Mao Qiang. He’s a rural kid whose parents rely on farming for a living. He is a student in clinical medicine, and according to my investigation, he has had a crush on you for quite some time. But you know well that you could never like someone who looks like him. He was already very insecure, and with his classmates mocking him, it made him even more so. However, he originally didn't have the courage to kill you. But on that day, he received a text message—a message telling him to kill you—so he really went ahead and did it."
"What kind of message could make such an insecure person think about murder?"
"I don't know; that's what his roommate said. We haven't found his phone yet."
"Did his roommate say that? So his roommate knows he was coming to kill me?"
"Yes, but they didn't really believe he would actually kill someone."
"What do you mean?"
"Mao Qiang is a very timid and insecure person. Because he doesn't look good, he is often teased by his classmates, and he has a crush on you. This naturally became a joke among the students. I've also heard that he is often bullied in the dormitory, with his roommates squeezing toothpaste into his food or putting bugs in it. What’s even more unbearable is that they actually teamed up to fill a green tea bottle with their own urine and made him drink it as if it were green tea."
Captain Xing paused at this point, and Su Jin'er furrowed her brows tightly; it turned out he was also a pitiful person.
"Did he drink it?" Chu Feifan asked.
"Yes, he took a sip and then vomited. After that, he actually hid in the bathroom and cried. What astonished me even more was that he had written you a love letter but hadn't sent it out before all this happened."
"But why would the Killer want to kill him? Wouldn't it be better to use him?"
"If I'm guessing correctly, you've indeed encountered a very twisted person. In his mind, he may have always believed you belonged to him, and this person's death serves as a warning—a warning to those around you."
Everyone unconsciously turned their gaze toward Chu Feifan. Su Jin'er felt a chill; if it were a murder motivated by something, that would be one thing, but if it were a psychopathic killing, there really would be no way to deal with it!
Chu Feifan shrugged nonchalantly and said, "Let him come find me; I want to see what kind of psychopath this is."
"However, this is just my guess; it may not be accurate. The priority now is to find his phone."
"The Killer must have taken the phone. Even if he didn't take it, he would have deleted the messages," Jiang Jie said.
"It’s very likely, but his roommate said that Mao Qiang was mumbling about hiding his phone when he left, so I think Killer is probably looking for his phone now."
"But if his roommate knew he was going to kill Jin'er, why didn’t anyone call the police?" Jiang Jie asked, frowning in confusion.
"Think about it. A person who is usually timid is going to commit murder; who would believe that? If someone with a more twisted personality were to say they were going to kill someone, people might believe it. But no one would believe Mao Qiang could kill."
"That makes sense."
"So they just took it as a joke and didn’t pay any attention, all of them went to watch the match. Who would notice if Mao Qiang really intended to kill?"
"Then the gaze I felt in the lobby was from Mao Qiang?"
"Yes, but there should have been two people at that time."
"How did you get injured then?"
Captain Xing sighed and said apologetically, "It’s embarrassing to admit, but I was too careless. After receiving a text from Xiao Jie, I hurried over there. Before I even reached the door, I saw someone rushing out from inside, looking around like a thief. Then he ran through the woods towards the Teacher's Dormitory Building. I quickly chased after him, but since I was far away and he had his head down, I couldn’t see his face clearly. I only noticed he was wearing all black, which stood out. I thought he would enter the classroom dormitory building and was wondering if he was from a certain class when he suddenly ran out of the school gate and headed towards the woods. After being a detective for so many years, it was the first time I felt so defeated. I thought he hadn’t noticed me following him, but as soon as I entered the woods, I was knocked out. Later, I realized it was all a ruse to draw me away."
"So does that mean Mao Qiang has an accomplice?" Su Jin'er felt even more puzzled.
"No, I think the person I chased must be the real Killer, and since Mao Qiang has seen him, he couldn’t let Mao Qiang live; he had to kill him."
"Just killing him is enough! Why use such cruel methods?"
"If you knew how he died, you would find the Killer even more cruel."
Everyone remained silent, continuing to listen to Captain Xing.
"He was killed through dissection."
"What? Didn't he scream? Was that forest in the hospital the crime scene?"
"Yes, there were bloodstains everywhere; it was the crime scene. Mao Qiang wasn't mute; of course, he would scream. But if a person's vocal cords are damaged, they can't make a sound. Mao Qiang's limbs showed signs of being tied up, so the Killer bound him and then gouged out one of his eyes, forcing him to watch as his abdomen was sliced open and his organs were removed. The main source of life in a person is the heart, and the Killer knew this well, so he took out the heart last. Therefore, before Mao Qiang died, he must have seen his own organs."
Before Captain Xing could finish, Su Jin'er and Jiang Jie vomited. Su Jin'er had hardly eaten all day, so she only dry-heaved, her stomach churning painfully until her face turned pale.
Zuo Yi hurried out to call a doctor, and after some commotion, her stomach felt somewhat better.
Captain Xing said apologetically, "Did you not eat?"
Su Jin'er forced a smile and said, "I skipped lunch again today. Really grateful to this Killer for saving food!"
Everyone was stunned.
"If you don't eat soon, you'll really be able to fly like a kite. So you should eat! I'll make sure you finish your meal at lunch today."
"However, Feifan, you need to be careful lately; his next target might very well be you. I just realized that the Killer made Mao Qiang kill Jin'er as a decoy; the real target is actually you."
Chu Feifan thought for a moment and said, "You're right! How did I not think of that? He knows that if someone is trying to kill Jin'er, I would definitely save her, so he could use that opportunity to kill me."
The sudden realization sent a chill down Su Jin'er's spine. Fortunately, his injuries were not severe; otherwise, she would never forgive herself for it.
Unconsciously glancing at Chu Feifan, she found him looking back at her. Su Jin'er could understand the expression in his eyes; he was saying: Don't be sad. I would willingly die for you.
Su Jin'er lowered her head. She was the true culprit; if anyone deserved to die, it was her. Yet that person forced her to live, which was the real meaning of a fate worse than death!
Captain Xing sighed as he watched them and said, "You are both good kids. No one wishes to encounter such things, but you must be strong. Otherwise, Killer will remain at large. I know Jin'er has been thinking that if she dies, she won't burden others anymore. But have you considered that even if you were gone, Killer would still find another target and continue killing? He treats murder as a game; no matter who dies, it won't stop him. So living well and helping us catch the real culprit is the right thing to do."
Su Jin'er looked at Captain Xing with gratitude. He was right; death wouldn't end everything; it would only allow the tragedy to continue. Only by capturing Killer could the nightmare come to an end.
She took a deep breath and said, "Thank you, Captain Xing. I understand now."
Chu Feifan also looked at Captain Xing gratefully and said, "Thank you so much. We told her so much, but we couldn't change her mind about sacrificing her life for atonement. I didn't expect your words to achieve what we couldn't."
"Uh! Your contributions are far greater than mine. Look at me; I'm not even a competent detective!" Captain Xing pointed to his injured head.
Although everyone was joking, they all knew that no one felt relaxed inside. As long as Killer remained free, they couldn't let their guard down.
Mao Qiang wanted to kill Su Jin'er, and news of Chu Feifan's heroic rescue quickly spread throughout the campus. There were too many people present at the scene for it to be concealed. However, this could also be used to force Killer to reappear. Although no one wished for anyone else to die, Killer was too cunning; the evidence left at the scene was insufficient to identify who he truly was.
