Chu Feifan thought for a moment and said, "Well, they really don't seem to recognize you. Are you suggesting we should investigate Ruan Hongmei?"
In fact, Su Jin'er had also suspected her, but she was too good to herself and showed no signs of having any ulterior motives, so she gradually let her guard down.
"She has been very nice to me since I entered the dormitory, even nicer than Xiaoyuan. At first, I felt a bit uncomfortable, but she said she had heard about me for a long time and was eager to see who I was, so she transferred here. However, later on, I didn't notice her doing anything bad, so I stopped paying attention and treated her as a good friend."
"You are really careless!" Chu Feifan said with a tone of reproach.
Suddenly, she remembered something and said excitedly, "Can you help me with something?"
"What is it?"
"Help me escape from here tonight."
After some discussion, they decided to first avoid the nurse. To escape, one of them had to stay behind while the other would be outside to assist.
So the final decision was for Zuo Yi to leave and wait outside at night while Chu Feifan stayed behind to take Su Jin'er out later.
At eight o'clock in the evening, after the nurse took away their dinner trays, everything returned to calm. Chu Feifan crawled out from under the bed and brushed off some dust from her clothes. "Zuo Yi is already waiting outside. Will they turn off the lights here at night?"
"No, the streetlights outside will stay on all night to prevent some patients from escaping."
Chu Feifan nodded. The lights outside remained on; although it was dark, the streetlights illuminated the area. If they encountered patrolling security on the way, they wouldn't even have a place to hide.
Su Jin'er had already changed out of her patient gown into a dark outfit so that she wouldn't be easily spotted at night.
Cheng Xiaoying nervously looked at them and asked, "Can I go with you?"
"No, I can't let you take that risk. I don't know what we will encounter when we go back, and I don't want the same thing to happen again." A hint of sadness flashed in her eyes.
Cheng Xiaoying bit her lip tightly; she really wanted to see Hao Hongtao. They hadn't mentioned a word about Hao Hongtao's death all afternoon. She knew they were considering her feelings, but she also wanted to know! It was just that she couldn't bring herself to ask.
Su Jin'er understood what she was thinking, but they couldn't mention how terrible Hao Hongtao's death had been in front of her.
"I still need you here to keep an eye on the nurse! If she suddenly comes, at least you'll be here. You can scream like before to scare her away so she doesn't find out I'm not here."
Although Cheng Xiaoying really wanted to go, she nodded obediently. Su Jin'er squeezed her hand, which felt cold and devoid of warmth.
At nine o'clock, the two of them cautiously stepped outside, relieved to find no one around.
They quickly ran toward the main gate, bending down and trying to stay in the shadows to avoid being seen. Fortunately, they didn't encounter any patrolling security guards, and Zuo Yi was anxiously waiting for them at the gate.
"Why are you so slow? Hurry up!"
Su Jin'er climbed over the gate first and then jumped down. It was her first time escaping over the gate, and she felt a bit nervous. After landing, she leaned on her knees and gasped for breath. Chu Feifan, being a boy, quickly followed suit.
Zuo Yi drove them straight toward the school.
Having not returned to school for several days, Su Jin'er felt uneasy looking at the dark surroundings. This place was almost becoming her nightmare.
"What do you want to check at school?" Chu Feifan asked. Although they had returned to school, everyone was still cautious, as many believed that Su Jin'er had killed Ruan Hongmei, and she should be locked up in the police station, not appearing at school.
"Do you remember I mentioned hearing knocking sounds at midnight? I find it strange because every time I open the door, there's no one there. So I thought, maybe it's not a person knocking."
"Could it be a ghost knocking?" Zuo Yi casually joked. Although it was meant to be humorous, they all felt a sudden chill in the air; deep down, they knew it was just psychological.
"No, maybe there are other things we don't know about."
She hadn't figured out what it could be yet, but she needed to go back to the dormitory to check.
The girls' dormitory door was still unlocked. To avoid attracting the attention of the dorm manager, Su Jin'er went up alone while Chu Feifan and Zuo Yi waited downstairs.
As Su Jin'er slowly walked upstairs, her heart sank with each step. In truth, she was terrified of returning here, back to that room filled with memories. Room 414 was her true nightmare. Linyuan, Du Xiaonan, Li Yiqian, and Ruan Hongmei had all been her good friends, but they were all gone now, leaving her alone. She had become the monster of this school, the killer in her classmates' eyes.
Her body trembled as her teeth chattered uncontrollably.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, she reached the fourth floor, drenched in sweat and pale-faced.
With shaking hands, she took out her key, praying that none of her classmates would see her. Fortunately, the door opened without anyone noticing.
Once inside the dormitory, she didn't turn on the light to avoid drawing attention. She opened her eyes wide to adjust to the darkness and then fumbled through the drawer for a flashlight. She waved it toward the window as a signal.
She shone the flashlight on Ruan Hongmei's bed; it was empty and covered in a thin layer of dust. Her eyes felt a bit sore, so she closed them briefly before opening them again.
In the light, dust quietly floated in the air, only visible under sunlight and artificial light. Su Jin'er shook her heavy head and began to seriously inspect the yellow door.
Finally, she discovered a very thin line in the gap of the door. One end of the line disappeared into the crevice above the door, while the other extended to the bottom of the door and then along the wall until it reached Ruan Hongmei's bed, where one end was hidden beneath her mattress.
So that's how it is!
The knocking sound that had terrified her for so long was actually caused by Ruan Hongmei. But why would she do this?
Su Jin'er sat on her bed, feeling dejected. She couldn't believe that she would be involved with the Killer or colluding with them. Ruan Hongmei had been so attentive and kind to her, even braving the rain to look for Zuo Yi when he went missing, and risking her life to save her when she was in danger. Could all of this have been a lie? Was it all just to get close to her and carry out this series of murders?
She refused to believe it; there was no reason for it. She couldn't completely deny Ruan Hongmei just because she had created those knocking sounds. It must have been just for fun!
With a heavy nod as if she had made a significant decision, she picked up her flashlight and prepared to leave. Just then, footsteps suddenly echoed outside. To avoid being discovered, she turned off the flashlight and hid behind the door.
However, the footsteps did not move away; she clearly heard them stop right outside her dorm room.
Could someone be coming in? Who could it be?
Quietly, she opened her wardrobe and hid inside, leaving a slight gap in the door so she could see who was outside.
The door creaked open, and she saw a figure walk in. It was too dark for her to see clearly, but she could tell that this person was short and stout. In her memory, she didn't seem to recognize anyone like that.
The figure looked around and, upon realizing no one was there, slowly approached Su Jin'er's bed and placed something on it. It was too dark for her to see what the person had put down.
Could it be a bomb?
The thought just crossed her mind, but she immediately dismissed it. No one would be foolish enough to place a bomb in a school dormitory unless that person had a grudge against everyone in the entire girls' dorm.
Suddenly, an image of someone flashed in her mind. Could it be her?
A figure lingered in the room for a while, then lay on Su Jin'er's bed for a moment, seemingly satisfied, before hunching over and leaving the dormitory.
Su Jin'er felt a wave of nausea; this person must be a pervert.
After she left, Su Jin'er stepped out and rummaged through her belongings on the bed. She pulled out what she had stuffed inside and discovered it was her underwear, with some white substance on it. She immediately threw the underwear into the trash can.
What a pervert indeed!
When she returned to school, she would have to replace everything on her bed. Who knows if that pervert comes here to lie down every day!
Su Jin'er opened the door and glanced at the dimly lit corridor. The yellow light cast an eerie silence over the hallway. For a moment, she suddenly felt as if a White-Clad Girl would float past her in the corridor, and Ruan Hongmei would appear behind her asking what she was looking at.
But nothing happened.
She stepped outside and quietly closed the door behind her. Looking up at the top of the door, she noticed a black object resting on the door frame. That must be what made the knocking sound!
Her purpose for coming back was fulfilled, and it was time to leave.
She glanced at the tightly closed door of Room 414 again, then quietly walked downstairs.
"Did you find what you were looking for?"
Su Jin'er nodded; she didn't intend to tell them about this matter.
"Are we going back now?"
Su Jin'er thought for a moment and asked, "Did you see a short and chubby person enter the dormitory just now?"
"No one short and chubby entered the dormitory, but the manager did go upstairs earlier."
A wave of nausea surged in Su Jin'er's stomach. Could it really be her?
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing!" She didn't want them to know that the manager had gone upstairs to steal her underwear; that incident had already made her feel very embarrassed.
