Cheng Xiaoying's complexion had noticeably improved compared to earlier, and her dark circles had lightened significantly. Although she was still not fully awake, at least she wouldn't scream so easily now.
"Remember, after you go back, you must not let her be frightened again. If you want her to recover completely, I advise you to wait a while before bringing her back."
Lu Lili nodded and said, "Okay, thank you!" Then she turned to Su Jin'er and said, "Thank you for keeping your promise."
"You're welcome."
After sending off Lu Lili and Cheng Xiaoying, Lin Yazhi looked at Su Jin'er and said, "You don't seem very well! I think there's something on your mind that you can't let go of."
Su Jin'er's body trembled slightly, and her eyes immediately lowered. Although she tried hard not to meet Lin Yazhi's gaze, she still couldn't hide it.
"Hmm, some things must be let go. You may think it's your fault, but that person might not see it that way."
Su Jin'er glanced at her for a moment before lowering her head again, nervously rubbing her fingers. Chu Feifan was somewhat confused; having known her for so long, he had never seen her this uneasy.
"Jin'er, what is it that you can't let go of?"
Su Jin'er's body began to tremble immediately, tears welling up in her eyes and slowly sliding down onto the back of her white hand.
Seeing Su Jin'er's tears made Chu Feifan panic; he looked apologetic and said, "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have asked. Please don't cry!"
He wanted to reach out to wipe away her tears but felt it was inappropriate, so his hand awkwardly hovered in the air.
The atmosphere became tense, while Lin Yazhi simply sat quietly with a smile, showing no intention of breaking the awkwardness.
After a long while, Su Jin'er finally stopped crying. She lifted her head to look at Chu Feifan and said, "I'm sorry for worrying you. Actually, I've always felt very sorry."
Sorry?
"Why do you feel sorry?"
"Do you remember Qiangzi? I feel partly responsible for his death. Although I've always wanted to go back and see him, I just don't have the courage."
Su Jin'er’s sobbing made Chu Feifan feel heartbroken. He knew that Qiangzi was killed by Cheng He, and the reason was also because of Jin'er, but she didn't mean to.
"This isn't something you wanted; it's something beyond your control, so please don't blame yourself, okay?"
Su Jin'er didn't respond, only gently shook her head.
"Go see him! That way you can truly let go. Otherwise, with your personality, this will haunt you for a lifetime and might even drive you to a mental breakdown."
After a while, Su Jin'er nodded and said, "Okay, I'll go back to see him in the next couple of days. Besides, I haven't seen my grandmother in a long time."
As Su Jin'er and the others were about to leave, Lin Yazhi smiled and saw them off at the door. Then, as they waved goodbye, she leaned close to Chu Feifan's ear and whispered: "Be careful of those around you."
This statement puzzled him. Be careful of whom? Su Jin'er or Ruan Hongmei?
The next day, Su Jin'er decided to take a bus back to her hometown. Ruan Hongmei insisted on going with her but was politely declined. However, strangely enough, she did not refuse Chu Feifan's request; perhaps being with him made her feel safe.
Sitting on the bus and watching the food flash by outside the window, her thoughts drifted back to her childhood. Back then, they were innocent and adorable, unaware of what worries were. They cried when they wanted to and laughed when they felt like it; nothing mattered because they didn't know they had to be responsible for their words in the future. It was because of this innocence that she made a promise to Qiangzi, a promise that ultimately led to his demise. Until his death, he might never have known that those words were just something he said casually.
That summer vacation, Su Jin'er was sent back to her grandmother's house again by her mother, and she was more than happy to return. A group of friends went to the riverside where the water was clear and completely unpolluted. They could see all the way to the riverbed from the surface, so the small fish swimming inside were clearly visible.
Su Jin'er pointed at a relatively larger fish in the river and said to Qiangzi: "If you can catch it and give it to me, I'll marry you when we grow up."
It was just a child's joke, but another child took it seriously. Without hesitation, he rolled up his sleeves and pant legs and jumped into the river. Catching fish with bare hands is quite difficult, but he kept trying hard for Su Jin'er's irresponsible words. His clothes got soaked completely, but he didn't care. Other kids laughed at him for being foolish; he still didn't mind—he only cared about Su Jin'er's words: "If you catch it, I'll marry you."
Perhaps heaven saw the child's perseverance, so it truly allowed him to catch that fish. Su Jin'er clapped her hands in joy, and the children even held a wedding for him. Afterwards, Qiangzi patted his chest and said, "From now on, you are my bride. I won't allow anyone to bully you."
This little joke, however, led to Qiangzi's demise, a pure and kind-hearted child.
Tears slid down her face and into her mouth, bitter.
Sitting beside her, Chu Feifan saw her expression and momentarily didn't know how to comfort her. In truth, he felt uneasy as well; perhaps he blamed himself for knowing her too late, for not being able to participate in her past and thus unable to understand the pain in her heart. But besides that, he also felt a bit sour. Although it was just a promise she made when she was young and naive, that promise was enough to shatter her spirit, while he could do nothing.
As if sensing Chu Feifan's unease, Su Jin'er wiped away the tears on her face and turned to look at him, saying, "I'm sorry, I was reminded of the past."
Although she had wiped away the tears on her face, there were still tears in her eyes, which added an extra touch of charm to her already clear and bright eyes, making him unable to resist wanting to kiss them.
Chu Feifan feigned calmness and said, "It's okay; I just think it's a pity."
Su Jin'er tilted her head in confusion as she looked at him.
"Such beautiful eyes shouldn't be swollen from crying," he reached out to wipe away a tear that had slipped from her eye but was dodged by Su Jin'er.
His hand froze in mid-air.
It was already the second time.
He awkwardly smiled, lowered his hand, and turned his head away. Although she was now his girlfriend, he couldn't understand why he felt she had been deliberately avoiding him during this time.
"I'm sorry," Su Jin'er said softly.
"Nothing's wrong," Chu Feifan said with a smile.
The two fell into silence again. Chu Feifan turned to look at the other passengers in the vehicle. There were only a dozen or so people, most of whom appeared to be migrant workers. Some were fiddling with their phones, while others lay back against their seats, sleeping. Only one person, who looked like a student, was engrossed in a book.
After glancing around, he leaned back in his seat and closed his eyes to rest.
Seeing him close his eyes, Su Jin'er turned to look at him. His face was perfect from both the front and the side, resembling a prince straight out of a comic. She couldn't imagine such a perfect boy being infatuated with her. Although she had agreed to be his girlfriend, she hadn't fully opened her heart to him because she feared that in the end, she might lose herself. However, when she saw the worried expression on Chu Feifan's face because of her, her heart began to waver. Should she trust him?
It seemed he sensed her gaze; Chu Feifan opened his eyes and caught her questioning look. Startled by his sudden movement, Su Jin'er quickly shifted her gaze to the window.
From Su Jin'er's eyes, Chu Feifan saw worry and doubt. For a moment, he didn't quite understand what her concerns were, but upon reflection, he realized that although they had been through life and death together, after what happened with Qin Yu, she might have started to distrust him again. It was natural for everyone to have a self-protective instinct, and it was normal for her not to trust herself.
With this thought in mind, Chu Feifan closed his eyes once more.
Just as Chu Feifan was dozing off, someone tapped him on the shoulder. He heard Su Jin'er say it was time to get off.
He rubbed his eyes and said, "So soon?"
"Not yet! We still have a third of the journey left, and we need to walk the rest of the way. Hurry up and get off!" Perhaps due to the anticipation of seeing her grandmother soon, Su Jin'er's mood seemed much brighter.
Chu Feifan, the young master, did not show any displeasure about having to walk the remaining distance; instead, he felt excited. Although their school was also in the mountains, suddenly being away from the hustle and bustle of the city and arriving at such a quiet and serene place made him very happy.
"Thank you for letting me come back with you."
Su Jin'er was taken aback for a moment but then smiled and said, "Just don't complain about getting tired later!"
The two stood by the roadside. On the left side loomed tall mountains that reached into the clouds, their peaks hidden from view. On the right side lay a basin with a lush green forest below, which greatly lifted their spirits.
"Is your grandmother's house down there?"
"Yes, so we have to go down from here."
"Alright!"
Saying this, Chu Feifan was about to walk through the lush grass that almost obscured the ground.
"Hey! Come back, there's a path over there."
Chu Feifan had already stepped into the grass, which was almost as tall as his waist. Hearing Su Jin'er’s words, he turned back and asked while brushing off the grass that clung to him, "Where's the path? It's all grass, I can't see it!"
Su Jin'er pointed behind him and said, "Look, it's over there."
However, because there was too much grass and it was too high, he didn't see it. Su Jin'er smiled and walked over, then pointed to a small path.
Chu Feifan widened his eyes in surprise as he looked at the narrow path that resembled a sheep trail and said, "This? Wow, what a big path!"
Still, he followed Su Jin'er slowly down the slope. Since it was downhill, they had to be very careful; otherwise, they might slip down.
