Ruan Hongmei also made her way around to the basketball court. Although the distance was relatively far, there were more people there, which made her feel less afraid. As she walked, she watched the boys on the court sweating it out, and then she spotted a familiar boy—Zhuang Lingtian, who had been sticking close to Jin'er a few days ago.
She thought to invite him to join her!
That was her first idea upon seeing Zhuang Lingtian.
Since she thought of it, she should act on it!
She headed toward the basketball court, unsure if he would agree to go with her, but mentioning Su Jin'er should help, right?
“Zhuang Lingtian!” she called out as she stood by the edge of the basketball court.
However, it seemed he didn’t hear her; only a few boys standing nearby turned curiously to look at her.
She shouted again, this time he heard her and said something to his classmates before running over, while the boys behind him cheered him on.
“What’s up?” he asked Ruan Hongmei.
“Well, it’s about Jin'er.”
“What happened to Jin'er? Is she in trouble?” Upon hearing it was about Jin'er, he immediately became anxious.
“There was a little incident last night, but she just hurt her foot. I… I want you to come with me to a place, just to help Jin'er.”
“What is it? Just tell me all at once.” Hearing that Jin'er wasn’t in serious trouble made him a bit impatient.
“It’s just that last night Jin'er saw a corpse in the woods behind, so she asked me to check it out since she can’t go because of her injury.”
Zhuang Lingtian was momentarily stunned after hearing this, then said, "Is that all? Are you scared? How can someone who wants to be a doctor be afraid of corpses? That's really cowardly."
His tone was filled with mockery, and just that one sentence caused Ruan Hongmei's impression of him to change drastically. However, in order to persuade him to go with her, she had to endure it.
"Yes, I am scared, so let's just say I'm helping Jin'er."
"You’re mistaken; I’m helping you. If Jin'er were to go see it herself, I doubt she would invite anyone."
His words were blunt and unrelenting, but since she needed his help, she could only curse his ancestors in her heart while still smiling on the outside. "Alright! You’re helping me, so can we go now?"
She said through gritted teeth.
"Okay, let me grab my clothes."
Zhuang Lingtian was only wearing a black tank top, and his white shirt was on a nearby rack. He quickly ran over to grab it and said, "Let’s go!"
The two of them wandered around the forest several times but didn’t see any corpses; not even a ghostly shadow was in sight. What was strange was that it was already spring, and in other forests, the sweet sounds of birds could be heard everywhere. Yet in this forest, the only sound was the wind.
Zhuang Lingtian impatiently said, "Let’s go! There’s nothing here."
They left the forest and parted ways by the basketball court.
"Jin'er, you tricked me! There wasn’t even a ghostly shadow in the forest." Ruan Hongmei said with dissatisfaction as she returned to her dormitory. She was still angry at Zhuang Lingtian.
"What’s wrong? You seem really upset." Su Jin'er noticed Ruan Hongmei's mood and thought it was strange that there were no corpses but felt comforting her was more important.
"It’s that Zhuang Lingtian... never mind, it's nothing." She lay on her bed with a gloomy expression.
Seeing her gloomy expression, it was clear that she had been bullied by Zhuang Lingtian. However, what worried her now was where that corpse had gone. Could it be that she had mistaken it? But that was definitely the old man who had told her about Ghost Marriage early that morning!
It seemed that in order to prove whether that old man was really dead, she still needed to ask Chu Feifan for help.
She took out her phone and called Chu Feifan.
"Hello! Feifan, where are you?"
"I'm at the student council! I'm busy with the Singing Competition. What's up? By the way, I just heard Ruan Hongmei say that you hurt your foot. I'll come see you when I'm done."
Su Jin'er glanced at the still angry Ruan Hongmei on the bed and thought to herself how quick her mouth was. She replied, "Okay, but could you bring me some information about the old man who watched over the Morgue when you come?"
"Sure!"
After hanging up, just as she put her phone down, it rang again.
Seeing an unfamiliar number on the screen, she answered with some confusion, "Hello!"
There was a moment of silence on the other end, followed by a faint but intense sound of heavy breathing, which made Su Jin'er's heart inexplicably tense.
"Hello! Who is this?" she asked again.
The breathing on the other end gradually became clearer, and then a familiar male voice came through: "Jin'er, are you in your dorm?"
Su Jin'er helplessly closed her eyes. Damn Zhuang Lingtian, he almost scared her to death: "Yes! Is there something wrong?"
Although she was very angry, she still asked softly.
"I heard you hurt your foot. I just went to the school doctor to get some medicine and I'm bringing it to you right now."
Bringing it here?
This is the girls' dormitory! However, before Su Jin'er could say anything, the call had already ended.
"Who was that?" Ruan Hongmei asked as she sat up.
Su Jin'er pursed her lips and said, "It was the person you were angry with earlier, Ren Re."
"What?" Upon hearing it was Zhuang Lingtian, Ruan Hongmei rolled up her sleeves and said, "I'm going to kill him and hang his body on the city gate."
On the city gate?
She must have watched too many dramas!
At that moment, a series of knocks sounded at the door.
Ruan Hongmei ran to open it and was surprised to see Zhuang Lingtian standing outside.
"You?? How did you get up here? Didn't the administrator stop you?"
"I came up using my feet. What a stupid question," Zhuang Lingtian pushed Ruan Hongmei aside and entered the dormitory. "Jin'er, where did you hurt yourself? Let me take a look."
Upon seeing Su Jin'er’s ankle wrapped up so thickly it looked as big as her thigh, he widened his eyes and exclaimed, "Wow! It's swollen like this?!"
"You didn't come just to bring me medicine, did you?"
"Hey! You really know me," he said as he sat down on Su Jin'er's bed.
"Hey! Who allowed you to sit down?" Ruan Hongmei shouted, her voice raised.
"What does it matter to you?" He then turned to Su Jin'er, completely ignoring the furious Ruan Hongmei beside him. "I'm here to tell you about some things I found in the woods."
This statement only angered Ruan Hongmei further. "Didn't you say you found nothing? Why didn't you tell me?"
"Why should I tell you?"
"Alright, hurry up and say what you discovered," Su Jin'er urged, clearly concerned about what she had seen in the woods.
Zhuang Lingtian mysteriously pulled something out of his pocket and slowly opened it. It was a piece of white paper, and when he fully unfolded it, Su Jin'er froze. The paper depicted an eye—the eye of the Paper Man.
"Where did you find this?" Su Jin'er asked nervously.
"Near the Morgue! There were no bodies like you mentioned, but I saw this, and it looked just like the eye we found at the construction site, just from the other side. I thought it might be useful to you, so I picked it up."
Now Su Jin'er could be certain that the Paper Man had been destroyed. Even if they went searching again, they might only find scraps of paper. Could it have been that girl?
However, no matter how one looked at it, a normal person's speed couldn't be that fast, and there was no sound at all. Everything made her believe that this was beyond what a single person could accomplish. Terrifying and bizarre images flooded her mind, and she didn't even notice that her face had turned pale.
"Jin'er, what's wrong with you?"
In a daze, she seemed to hear someone calling her. She wanted to smile back at the person who called her, but suddenly everything went dark, and she lost consciousness.
When she woke up again, she was already in the hospital.
"Jin'er, you're awake?"
In front of her was Ruan Hongmei's worried face.
"What happened to me?"
She struggled to sit up, realizing that ever since she entered the medical school, she had been fainting easily. Could it be anemia?
Ruan Hongmei placed a pillow behind her and said, "Your foot isn't sprained; it's localized poisoning."
"Localized poisoning? How is that possible?"
Ruan Hongmei shrugged and replied, "I don't know either; that's what the doctor said."
Su Jin'er pulled her foot out from under the blanket. The thick bandage had been removed, replaced by several carefully wrapped layers of gauze. She reached down to slowly unwrap the gauze.
"You can't unwrap it."
"It's fine."
The gauze was wrapped around four or five layers deep. Beneath it was her fair ankle, but at that moment, there were distinct red fingerprints on her skin.
"What happened here?"
She asked in surprise.
"I don't know either. It was originally just a sprain, but after you fainted and we got to the hospital, they unwrapped the bandage and found it like this. Then the doctor examined you and said it was localized poisoning, but the reason for your fainting hasn't been determined yet."
Local Poisoning?
Su Jin'er carefully touched the red mark with her hand. It felt slightly warm to the touch, while the skin around her ankle felt numb, as if she were touching someone else's skin. Strangely, the elasticity of that area had diminished compared to before, resembling the swelling one experiences after a night of sleep; pressing it down took a long time to return to its original state.
"The doctor drew some blood for testing because they said they have never encountered this kind of poison before."
Su Jin'er nodded; it was indeed very strange. She recalled the pale hand that had grabbed her ankle that night. Could it be that she was poisoned by corpse poison? However, it didn't seem to resemble corpse poison, and there were no wounds on her skin. Could the poison have seeped into her skin?
"Jin'er, what are you thinking about? Chu Feifan is here to see you."
Su Jin'er looked up and saw Chu Feifan standing by the bed with a bag of apples, smiling brightly at her. "When did you arrive?"
"I came while you were lost in thought. How is it? Does your foot hurt?"
