Lying in bed, she tossed and turned, unable to fall asleep. The words of Akasaka echoed in her ears, and she was unsure whether to believe him. The case seemed to be gradually becoming clearer, yet many questions remained unanswered, wrapping around her nerves like a spider's web.
Suddenly, a song drifted into her ears, clear as if it were right beside her. She got out of bed and stood by the window, listening intently to the singing outside. Just like last time, it was a song by Teresa Teng. She thought it might be a hallucination brought on by her exhaustion.
Taking a deep breath, she let the cold air fill her lungs, making her mind clearer, but the song continued.
She heard a rustling sound behind her and turned to find Ruan Hongmei getting out of bed.
"Are you still awake?" Ruan Hongmei asked.
Su Jin'er made a shushing gesture and whispered, "Did you hear someone singing?"
Ruan Hongmei frowned and listened carefully for a moment before saying, "No! I don't hear anything!"
Su Jin'er furrowed her brow. How could that be? The sound was so clear; there was no way she could miss it! But when she listened again, she realized the singing had vanished.
"It's gone!"
Ruan Hongmei tilted her head in confusion as she looked at her.
"The singing disappeared; this is the second time I've heard it."
Ruan Hongmei placed her hands on Su Jin'er's shoulders and pushed her back onto the bed, covering her with the blanket. Then she sat on the edge of the bed and said, "Alright, don't think about it. You must be too tired lately and didn't rest well. After tonight's scare, it's understandable that you're having hallucinations. Just get some good rest; once Killer is caught, we can return to our normal lives."
Su Jin'er obediently nodded and said, "You should sleep too!"
"You sleep first; I'll go to sleep after you do."
Su Jin'er closed her eyes obediently, feeling a warm sensation in her heart. It reminded her of her mother who used to sit by her bedside watching over her until she fell asleep before going to bed herself. Now, that role was being played by a classmate she had known for less than two weeks.
That night, she slept soundly; it was the best night's sleep she had since coming to this school—without any dreams.
The next morning when she woke up, the weather seemed particularly nice. Sunlight streamed through the window, gently illuminating the white floor with a soft glow. She smiled slightly and got dressed. Ruan Hongmei still seemed to be asleep. She walked into the bathroom to wash up, and when she came out, Ruan Hongmei was already up but had dark circles under her eyes as if she hadn't slept well last night.
"Did you not sleep well yesterday? You look like a panda."
"I might have been too fond of you. After you fell asleep, I ended up dozing off on your bed. When I woke up, it was already bright outside. I had just laid down for a moment when you woke up."
Su Jin'er frowned, looking at her amusingly. "Then why didn't you sleep a bit longer? Aren't we not having classes today?"
"Does it really matter whether we have classes or not? It seems like you haven't attended in a while. The most important thing now is to catch Killer, so you can rest well and no longer have to work so hard."
Su Jin'er looked at her with gratitude. She was truly the best friend she had besides Linyuan, even better than Linyuan. She raised her head to look out the window. Xiaoyuan, I'm sorry. Although I really don't want to believe that you've left me forever, I have to face life without you. I hope you won't be upset about my relationship with Hongmei!
Su Jin'er thought to herself and then unconsciously smiled, as if her relationship with Ruan Hongmei was quite unusual.
Her phone rang, and she knew without thinking who it was.
"Hello!" She walked toward the balcony with her phone.
"Jin'er, are you awake?" Chu Feifan's voice sounded filled with excitement.
"Yes, are you going to tell me some good news? You sound so happy."
"Haha! You caught on quickly. Yes, we caught Killer."
"Really?" She couldn't hide her happiness.
"Yes, we're going to the police station for his interrogation shortly. We originally planned for you to stay and rest, but I thought you must have a lot of questions, so we invited you to come along."
"Okay, let's go down right away."
After hanging up the phone, Su Jin'er happily said, "Hurry up and wash up! We're going to the police station; Feifan said they caught Killer."
"Really?"
"Really!" Su Jin'er pushed Ruan Hongmei into the bathroom.
Twenty minutes later, the three of them gathered downstairs, all feeling very happy. This was the happiest day they had experienced in the past six months, and now they finally understood how wonderful ordinary life could be.
Captain Xing sent Jiang Jie to pick them up. On the way, Chu Feifan recounted how they had captured Killer, but his first sentence left them puzzled.
He said, "Actually, it's a bit inappropriate to say we caught him; it's more accurate to say he turned himself in."
"How so?"
It turned out that after they returned Su Jin'er and Ruan Hongmei to their dormitory, they did not go back to their own dorms but instead returned to the Old Laboratory. They believed Akasaka was still inside, so they thought it would be best to wait quietly. Shortly after they returned, they saw someone sneaking out from the basement. This person was covered in blood and looked ghostly. Since Zuo Yi had seen Akasaka before, he immediately recognized him as the one he had knocked out who had woken up too quickly. Just as they were about to rush out, Akasaka suddenly spoke up, saying he knew they were there and that if they wanted to catch him, he would not run away. Initially, they did not believe him and thought he was just testing them. However, to their surprise, he sat down as if he had no intention of leaving. They were not far from him; if they really charged at him, given his condition, it wouldn't be easy for him to escape. So they decided not to hide anymore and walked out openly, and indeed, he did not run away.
"Why is that?"
Chu Feifan shook his head. "We were puzzled at the time too, but his demeanor was even stranger—like a defeated rooster with its head down, refusing to speak when asked anything."
"I think he must have realized his crimes," Jiang Jie said as he turned to look at them.
"If he truly recognized his crimes, so many people wouldn't have died," Su Jin'er said slowly. Then she turned her head toward the window. Although she hated Akasaka, she also felt sympathy for him. After all, it was quite normal for someone abandoned by their parents and living alone abroad since childhood to develop psychological issues. But what could have caused his sudden change of heart and led him to turn himself in?
After thinking for a long time without finding an answer, she leaned back against her chair and closed her eyes. Although she had slept well the previous night, she still felt mentally drained and dozed off again.
When she woke up again, they had already arrived at the police station. She was awakened by Chu Feifan shaking her.
"Are we there?" she asked while rubbing her eyes.
"Yes! You must be tired! I should have let you rest in the dormitory," Chu Feifan said with concern as he looked at her weary face.
"I'm fine; I'll just rest properly after the case is over," she said while avoiding Chu Feifan's intense gaze, feeling a flush on her face.
"Alright then, let's get out of the car!"
Chu Feifan opened the car door, got out first, and then helped them open their doors.
Standing in the sunlight, Su Jin'er suddenly felt a wave of dizziness. She closed her eyes for a moment and then opened them again; the dizziness faded away. Recently, due to lack of rest and irregular meal times, she had been feeling a bit anemic.
"Jin'er, you look so pale. Are you feeling unwell?" Chu Feifan furrowed his brows tightly, showing concern.
"I'm fine. It might just be that I haven't been resting well lately and I'm a bit anemic. I'll make sure to take care of it once this is over."
Chu Feifan nodded, and the group walked towards the office building together.
Captain Xing was sitting in the office waiting for them. When he saw them enter, he seemed quite happy and said with a smile, "You finally made it! This person is really tough; he insisted on seeing Jin'er before he would talk."
"See me?" Su Jin'er pointed to herself in disbelief.
Captain Xing nodded. "After handling so many cases, this is the first time I've encountered such a difficult criminal!"
Saying this, he awkwardly rubbed his nose.
"Alright! I'll go meet him."
Captain Xing led them to the interrogation room. Through the window, they saw Akasaka sitting motionless in a chair with his head down, as if he were dead; only his occasionally moving fingers indicated that he was still alive.
"He has maintained this position for almost an hour without moving at all. If it were someone else, their body would have gone numb by now, but he seems completely unresponsive."
"I'll go take a look," Su Jin'er said as she moved to push the door open but was stopped by Chu Feifan.
"Be careful. If anything seems off, call us immediately. Don't forget about that terrifying drug he researched."
Su Jin'er nodded and then pushed the door open to enter.
"You've come," he said in a low voice without lifting his head.
"Well, why me?"
He raised his head and looked at Su Jin'er, but his gaze gradually lost focus, eventually staring blankly into the distance.
"Actually, I envy you."
Su Jin'er tilted her head, looking at him in confusion.
"You have so many good friends around you. They would even be willing to die for you, while I have nothing. Even the family ties that have supported me all this time turned out to be a deception in the end."
Su Jin'er stared at him in shock. "What do you mean?"
He shook his head and said, "Don't you have a lot of questions to ask? Feel free to ask anything, and I will answer you."
