When they found Cheng He, he was reading in the library, seemingly very focused. Upon seeing Su Jin'er and the others approach him, he displayed a look of surprise.
Ruan Hongmei bent down, closed the book in his hands, and then looked at the classmates around who were quietly reading. "We need to talk to you, but we should go somewhere else."
Cheng He looked curiously at Ruan Hongmei, whose eyes were narrowed into slits, and then glanced at Su Jin'er and Chu Feifan. He told a nearby classmate that he would step out for a moment before leaving with Su Jin'er and the others, his expression filled with confusion throughout.
As Cheng He looked at Su Jin'er, his eyes unconsciously sparkled with light. Although he tried hard to hide it, it was still noticed by both Su Jin'er and the ever-observant Chu Feifan.
"You've been to the Old Laboratory Building, right?" Ruan Hongmei asked once they reached an empty classroom.
"Old Laboratory Building? How could I have gone there? That's haunted," Cheng He deliberately feigned fear.
"You're lying!" Ruan Hongmei glared at him.
"Why would I lie? And who are you? What gives you the right to come here and question me? You're not a police officer."
"You—"
"Alright, Hongmei, let me talk to him," Su Jin'er said as she pulled Ruan Hongmei back, who seemed ready to strike.
Cheng He looked at Su Jin'er with a surprised expression in his eyes, but quickly masked it again.
"You are from Maple Leaf Village, aren't you?" Su Jin'er asked calmly.
Cheng He paused for a moment before asking, "How do you know that?" Then he noticed Chu Feifan beside her and realized that Chu Feifan was the chairman of the student council. Suddenly, everything clicked into place for him.
"What's it to you?"
"Heh, coincidentally, my grandmother is from that village too."
Cheng He looked at her in surprise, completely unable to hide his expression this time.
"However, it's strange that I know all the kids around my age in the village, yet I don't remember you."
Su Jin'er’s words made Cheng He’s expression stiffen instantly. He looked at Su Jin'er with disbelief as his lips twitched, but soon he calmed down and said, "It's not surprising that you know me; after all, I was different back then compared to now!"
Su Jin'er tilted her head, looking at him in confusion.
Then he sneered and said, "Back then, your eyes were only on Qiangzi, weren't they?"
His tone of disappointment inexplicably made Su Jin'er's heart sink little by little.
"Qiangzi—how is he doing now?" After holding back for a long time, she finally asked.
Cheng He smirked with one corner of his mouth raised and said, "I thought you had forgotten him since you have a new boyfriend now!"
Su Jin'er looked up at him and asked, "What do you mean?"
"Don't you know what I mean? Who doesn't know that you and Qiangzi were the closest? Who doesn't know that you two are supposed to get married in the future?"
Cheng He’s words left Su Jin'er stunned.
Marriage?
Why did she know nothing about this? Why had no one told her?
She didn’t notice that behind her, Chu Feifan’s face had turned pale in an instant.
“What? Is this fake?”
Seeing Su Jin'er’s confused expression, Cheng He was also taken aback. Could it really be fake?
“Never mind, I didn't come to talk about this. I just wanted to ask you, what were you doing at the Old Laboratory Building last night?”
“I already said, I didn’t go to any Old Laboratory Building. That place is so creepy; who would want to go there!”
Cheng He appeared impatient.
“If you didn’t go, how do you know it’s creepy?” Su Jin'er pressed on.
“A classmate told me! Haven’t you all heard about it?”
“You're lying!” Ruan Hongmei said angrily, looking at him as if he wouldn’t give up until he hit a wall.
"Why would I lie? Do you have any evidence?"
"That ring is the evidence. The ring you gave to Feng Qian yesterday is the best proof."
"Hmph! That's ridiculous. I just picked up a ring that someone dropped and returned it to them. What does that have to do with whether I went to the Old Laboratory?" Cheng He laughed coldly.
Su Jin'er held back the impulsive Ruan Hongmei and said, "Whether you went or not, you know in your heart. Although I don't have direct evidence proving you were there, your denial already shows that you have something to hide. Also, while I don't know who is hiding in the Old Laboratory, I suspect they are connected to the incident that happened at our school. As for your plan to kill Chu Feifan, I'm sorry, but we already know about it. We can't do anything to you without evidence, but I believe evidence will come soon."
After calmly saying this, Su Jin'er watched as Cheng He's face slowly turned pale, shock written all over his face. She smiled lightly and turned to leave.
"Wait!" Cheng He suddenly said.
His facial muscles were clearly twitching.
"You saw everything last night?"
"Yes, not only did I see it, but I also heard it. I want to know who that person is."
Cheng He swayed slightly and leaned against the wall, saying, "I don't know who he is. He has always contacted me, and every time it was about going to the Old Laboratory. Although I really didn't want to go there, I endured it for you."
Su Jin'er frowned slightly.
"You don't mean you're planning to hire someone to kill, do you?" Chu Feifan scoffed.
"Hmph! People like you, born with a silver spoon, can never understand the life of a poor person like me. I like Jin'er, but she likes you. Watching you two together every day, do you know how much I hate it? I wanted to kill you and then come to the rescue like a hero, so that Jin'er would be mine." Cheng He's once handsome face now appeared somewhat twisted and terrifying as he tilted his head, glaring at Chu Feifan.
"So in your eyes, Jin'er is just a woman who likes money!" Chu Feifan said with a cold laugh.
Cheng He nervously glanced at Su Jin'er and said, "Jin'er, that's not what I meant. You know the situation in Maple Leaf Village."
As he spoke, he actually reached out to grab Su Jin'er's hand.
Su Jin'er dodged his outstretched hand and said, "Of course I know, but do you understand what it means to be poor in spirit?"
After a pause, she continued, "I know who you are now. However, it's unfortunate. I thought you would understand when you grew up, but I was wrong."
When Su Jin'er mentioned recognizing him, a flicker of surprise flashed in Cheng He's eyes, but it was overshadowed by disappointment.
"Hmph! Back then, all you cared about was playing with Qiangzi and the others; you didn't even notice me. Do you know that from the moment you appeared in our village wearing that white princess dress, I fell for you? But none of you played with me. Even when you saved me that time, you didn't even look at me. From that moment on, I vowed that if I couldn't have you, I would never give up."
A hint of ferocity flashed in Cheng He's eyes, startling Su Jin'er and causing her to instinctively step back.
"When I found out that you would marry Qiangzi when you grew up, I killed him. Do you know that?"
"What? You—killed Qiangzi?"
"Yes. Ever since the last time you visited the village, he never came back. Qiangzi would stand at the village entrance every day waiting for you—sometimes for a whole day or half a day without fail. His friends laughed at him for being foolish and called him a toad dreaming of eating swan meat, but he didn't care and kept waiting for you. Originally, they were all supposed to leave the village to work in the city, but Qiangzi was so unfortunate; he fell from a tree and broke his leg. You know how poor the medical care is in the village; his leg was ruined. So he had to stay in the countryside while I had no desire to work there. That's why I ran away—to study and work just to find you. Finally, during my senior year of high school, I learned where your family lived and that you were going to medical school. So I studied hard just to find you. Hmph! Unfortunately, you've never known."
Su Jin'er looked at him in shock. She had never imagined that he, who had once lived like a beggar, would do so much for her. However, even so, he should not have killed Qiangzi!
"How did you kill Qiangzi?"
"It was during the New Year when I went home. He saw me and excitedly asked if I had seen you and how you were doing. I told him you were doing well and that you had a handsome and wealthy boyfriend. I never expected that fool to smile and say that was good, as long as you were happy. I couldn't be that magnanimous. I asked him about what he said before about marrying you, and he told me it was just childish talk back then, and he foolishly took it seriously. I told him I was going to take you away, but he actually cursed at me and tried to hit me, so I pushed him off the mountain, and he fell to his death."
Cheng He's face revealed a mad smile: "Jin'er, what's wrong with me? Why don't you like me? I've known you much longer than he has. Why can't you see me? Huh? Why? If it weren't for you, Qiangzi wouldn't have died, do you know that? Do you know?"
Tears streamed down Su Jin'er's face. She really hadn't thought this much, nor did she expect Qiangzi to die. It was all her fault; if she had never gone to Maple Leaf Village, none of this would have happened.
"It's too late now; everything is too late. I'm a murderer; I'm a murderer," Cheng He screamed like a madman.
"You're a murderer, that's true, but the one at fault is you, not Jin'er. Back then, you were just a bunch of kids. Who would take what kids say seriously? Only someone as twisted as you would take it seriously. Jin'er doesn't dislike you because you're poor; it's because your actions are too extreme. If you had stood up earlier and told me you wanted to compete fairly, I believe Jin'er wouldn't hate you. I would have competed fairly with you too. But what did you do? You teamed up with the school's killer to try to kill me? You're really stupid!"
Chu Feifan's words pierced Cheng He's heart like needles. He collapsed to the ground and cried loudly.
