Su Jin'er heard Cheng He's footsteps approaching and moved downstairs. She remembered that there were 12 steps in this staircase, and if she took two steps at a time, she could reach the second floor in just six descents. Since Cheng He was also coming quietly, he walked slowly to avoid making too much noise.
Every step Su Jin'er took was cautious; her strides had to be large, and in such a quiet night, she needed to be careful. Due to her nervousness and fear, a thin layer of sweat formed on her forehead.
Finally, she reached the second floor. However, strangely, she no longer heard Cheng He's footsteps. She turned and hid in the corner of the second-floor corridor, waiting for Cheng He to leave first. But after waiting for a long time, she still did not hear Cheng He going downstairs, and she was so tense that she almost forgot to breathe.
After about five minutes, footsteps finally echoed from upstairs, but this time they were noticeably heavier than before.
Su Jin'er dared not make a sound as she hid in the corner waiting for Cheng He to come down. She did not know what Cheng He had taken, but she was sure it was something heavy.
At last, Cheng He's figure appeared in Su Jin'er's line of sight. To her surprise, Cheng He was carrying someone on his back—a woman whose head hung low, hair cascading down. She could not see the woman's face, but judging by her clothing, it should be Feng Qian.
How did she end up here?
Watching Cheng He carry Feng Qian downstairs, Su Jin'er stood still. The conversation between Cheng He and that man echoed in her ears. Could it be that the ring Cheng He gave Feng Qian earlier was fake?
The footsteps downstairs gradually faded away. She crouched down, and the feeling of tension slowly dissipated. What was the truth? If their earlier conversation was real, then the person with their back to her was the real Killer. She remembered Cheng He saying he wouldn't be as foolish as Li Yiqian; this person must be the Killer—there was no doubt about it. But how could she find him?
A gust of wind blew by, causing her to shiver involuntarily as she hugged her arms and slowly descended the stairs.
What an unsettling night this was!
Standing on the first floor, she looked at the wall and hesitated. Was everything in her dreams real? Should she believe that Xiaomei was really looking for her body?
After staring blankly for a while, she decided to set aside thoughts of Xiaomei for now; catching the Killer was the most important thing.
She slowly walked out of the Old Laboratory. The moon outside shone brightly, but strangely enough, even though the laboratory door was open, moonlight could not penetrate into the Old Laboratory. The hall on the first floor seemed perpetually shrouded in a faint black mist that would not disperse.
She shook her head and left the Old Laboratory.
The couples who had been dating outside had already returned to their dorms, leaving the campus empty and quiet, without even a sound of water. Although spring had arrived, the temperature difference between day and night was still significant, and the night wind remained cold, making people shiver.
She reached into her pocket to check the time but realized she had forgotten her phone. She sighed, blaming herself for being so careless. Fortunately, nothing had happened; otherwise, she wouldn't even be able to call for help.
She smiled helplessly.
Suddenly, she saw someone standing at the dormitory entrance, wearing a white coat, with hands in his pockets, looking down and kicking at small stones on the ground as if waiting for someone.
Su Jin'er recognized that it was Chu Feifan. She recalled Cheng He's words that their next target was Chu Feifan, which meant he was in danger. How could she save him?
She quickly ran over.
Hearing footsteps, Chu Feifan looked up and saw Su Jin'er. He excitedly hugged her.
"Where have you been? I called you but no one answered. Do you know how scared I was? Do you realize how dangerous it is for you to be out here?"
A few warm droplets slid down Su Jiner's neck; she knew they were Chu Feifan's tears.
She looked up at him and said, "I'm sorry, I left in a hurry and forgot my phone. Actually, your situation is more dangerous than mine."
Seeing Su Jin'er safe and sound made Chu Feifan feel relieved despite being angry that she hadn't brought her phone and was out at such a late hour.
"You fool! I can protect myself, but you're so frail and can't defend yourself. What would you do if you encountered danger without your phone?"
Seeing the tears of Chu Feifan, Su Jin'er felt a pang of sympathy. "Even though I'm a girl, I now know they won't kill me; the dangerous one is you!"
Chu Feifan frowned.
Su Jin'er recounted everything she had seen in the laboratory to Chu Feifan. After listening, Chu Feifan smiled and said, "Seeing how nervous you are, can I take that to mean you're concerned about me?"
Su Jin'er playfully hit him and said, "How can you be so unserious at a time like this? Someone is trying to kill people!"
Chu Feifan furrowed his brow and replied, "I don't care if they want to kill me; I only care about your safety."
Su Jin'er tilted her head and thought for a moment before saying, "Caring about my safety is good, but you also need to ensure your own safety!"
"Got it! But from what you said, the person with their back to you should be the Killer, and Cheng He is just an accomplice. But isn't Cheng He from the same village as your grandmother? You could investigate his family!"
"That's what I was thinking. However, before going there, there's something I'm unsure whether I should tell you." She had been struggling with whether or not to mention her dream.
"What is it? By the way, why were you at the laboratory at this time?"
Su Jin'er hesitated for a moment and said, "I was just debating whether I should tell you about this."
"Did you discover something?"
"Do you remember the incident with Xiaomei?"
"Yes, I remember. It happened over seventy years ago. Is this case really related to Xiaomei's incident?"
"No, I don't know about that, but I dreamt about Xiaomei while I was napping this afternoon, and the dream felt so real. It was Xiaomei who told me in the dream that there is a basement in the laboratory."
"Really? Are you overthinking it?"
"I don't know; I would prefer to think I'm just overthinking it, but Xiaomei told me that if I don't help her find her body, she will kill everyone."
Chu Feifan frowned. He knew that Su Jin'er, like him, didn't believe in demons, but since she brought it up and seemed so concerned, it must be important.
"It's already late. You should go back and rest! Tomorrow we can check out the basement and see what’s really down there. Also, we need to find out if that person has been in that room in the laboratory all along. He can't possibly be surviving without food or water! Or is there another passageway?"
Su Jin'er nodded. Although she knew she might not be able to sleep, she couldn't let that stop Chu Feifan from resting.
Back in her dormitory, alone again, she didn't turn on the light. Instead, she walked to her bed by the moonlight and lay down fully clothed. She turned to look at Linyuan's empty bed; her belongings were still there, and her parents hadn't come to collect them yet. A wave of sorrow made Su Jin'er curl up in pain. She missed Linyuan so much; ever since she left, she had tried to avoid thinking about her. Yet Linyuan's face always appeared in her mind as if she had just been sitting right in front of her.
This time she didn't cry but quietly recalled everything they had shared together—the joy and, of course, the disagreements. She remembered their first fight over a piece of candy. Both children loved that flavor, but unfortunately, only one piece was left. Being children, neither wanted to give it up to the other. They ended up having a falling out and didn't speak for two days. Now Su Jin'er realized they weren't really angry about the candy itself but rather because neither had offered it to the other. Su Jin'er chuckled softly; how adorable they had been back then! Even though they fought, they were innocent and carefree.
She really didn't want to grow up!
Su Jin'er sighed.
Just after she sighed, she heard another person's sigh.
She sat up alertly and asked, "Who is it?"
It turned out to be the sound of rustling coming from Du Xiaonan's bed, as if someone was getting dressed.
"Who is there?"
Su Jin'er stood up, looking fearfully at Du Xiaonan's bed. Was someone up there?
"It's me!" a person sat up in bed.
Long hair covered half of her face, and a white dress wrapped around her slender body.
This was clearly the image of a ghost from a TV show or horror story.
Gathering her courage, Su Jin'er asked again, "Who are you? Why are you acting all mysterious?"
The girl smiled shyly and said, "Sorry, I'm new here. When I arrived this afternoon and saw you sleeping soundly, I didn't want to wake you. I just came back from evening study and saw you weren't here, so I went to sleep."
Hearing the girl's words, Su Jin'er relaxed and sat down. "You scared me!"
"You didn't think I was a ghost, did you?"
Su Jin'er smiled but didn't answer.
The girl got out of bed and turned on the light. "Actually, I had just fallen asleep too. I wanted to greet you, but when I saw you come in without saying anything, I didn't dare to speak first for fear of scaring you."
Su Jin'er chuckled helplessly and said, "But you still scared me."
The girl frowned and said, "I'm curious, why did you suddenly ask who it was?"
"Wasn't it you who suddenly sighed and startled me?"
"Sigh? I didn't! I saw you seemed to be deep in thought, so I didn't want to disturb you. How could I sigh?"
The girl's words made Su Jin'er’s back stiffen instantly. If it wasn't her, could there be someone else in this room?
She became alert again, but in order not to scare the girl, she didn't say anything and just froze for a moment.
"Hello, I'm glad to share a dorm with you."
"Hello, let's take care of each other from now on!"
"Yes, I really admire you! You're so brave."
Su Jin'er frowned. You're brave too! Since you've heard her name, you should know what happened in this dormitory and still have the courage to move in.
