"You could have escaped back then. Why did you just watch her commit suicide without stopping her?" Chu Feifan said angrily.
"I never thought she would commit suicide. Besides, her situation was really terrible, I..."
"That's just an excuse. You wanted her dead; you never intended to save her because you were afraid she would take me away!"
Su Jin'er stared at him in shock. She never expected Chu Feifan would think of her this way. Did he really see her as someone who would sacrifice others for love?
She looked at him sadly.
"Chu Feifan, are you out of your mind? Jin'er would never intentionally let Wen Shishi die for this reason! Besides, you heard about her situation. Even if she didn't commit suicide, she wouldn't survive anyway. How can you say that about Jin'er?" Linyuan shouted angrily.
Chu Feifan seemed to realize that his emotions were a bit excessive. He frowned and turned his face toward the window. Wen Shishi's death was something he had never anticipated. Perhaps her death was due to his inquiry about events from five years ago. If anyone should be blamed, it should be him. He punched the car seat in frustration.
"Feifan, you're getting a bit worked up. Wen Shishi's death might have been predetermined by the Killer. The truth hasn't been uncovered yet, so don't jump to conclusions," Captain Xing said from the front seat.
Although Su Jin'er felt wronged, she said nothing and just looked out the window. She had considered Chu Feifan's reaction but never thought he would blame himself. While she did bear some responsibility for Wen Shishi's death, it couldn't all be placed on her; she had done her best.
Linyuan wrapped her arms around Su Jin'er's shoulders and smiled at her to show that she was okay. However, how could the loneliness and sadness in Su Jin'er's eyes escape Linyuan's notice after growing up together?
Captain Xing watched them through the rearview mirror and shook his head helplessly. He thought of his own wife; they had met through a surprising introduction. Many women were reluctant to have their husbands be police officers, but his wife never minded and supported his work wholeheartedly. It was because of her support that he could become the captain he was today. However, now that he was captain, he had even less time to go home. He was thirty-one this year, and his wife was three years younger than him; she was currently pregnant with their second child, and he hadn't been home for three days. He wondered how she was managing at home. Although they had argued over some disagreements in the past, he knew it was for his own good. Now, seeing this young couple argue made him somewhat envious; even if they were fighting, at least they were together—unlike himself.
With that thought, he shook his head and let out a sigh, which Su Jin'er happened to hear. She looked at him and asked, "Captain Xing, are you missing your family?"
He looked at the beautiful and calm girl through the rearview mirror. She had hidden her emotions well: "Yes! I haven't been home for three days now. My wife is pregnant and has to take care of our child; it's tough for her."
"Oh! By now, your first child should be about five years old, right? Is it a boy or a girl?"
"It's a boy!" A smile of relief appeared on Captain Xing's face as he thought of his child.
"He must be very cute!"
"Yes! It should be around the time he gets out of school now!"
Su Jin'er glanced at her watch; it was already four forty. After the last incident, she decided that she would only take off her watch when absolutely necessary, and would wear it at all other times.
Chu Feifan looked at Su Jin'er, hesitating to speak. His expression was somewhat awkward. He knew that what had happened earlier was his fault; he shouldn't have blamed Su Jin'er. She had been in danger too, and it was already difficult for her to rescue Wen Shishi from the cross. In that kind of environment, facing someone who was almost dead could drive anyone to the brink. How could he blame her for having the courage to save her?
Chu Feifan felt a wave of guilt wash over him. He realized that he had been overly emotional earlier.
"Jin'er, I—" He looked at Su Jin'er but didn't know how to start.
"You don't need to say anything; I understand." Su Jin'er smiled lightly. She didn't care whether he blamed her; what mattered to her was how he felt about her. If he thought Wen Shishi was more important than her, then there really was nothing left to say.
Although she knew her thoughts were selfish, there was nothing she could do; love is ultimately selfish.
"I don't think she's more important than you. It's just that she died because of me. I—"
"No, she didn't die because of you. That person said Wen Shishi deserved to die; we just don't know the reason yet. Perhaps once we find out, everything will be clear."
They fell silent, and the atmosphere in the car became somewhat heavy. Su Jin'er opened the window, and a breeze flowed in, refreshing their minds considerably.
The sky in the mountains seemed to darken a bit earlier; it was just past five, and the sky was already gray. The occasional breeze carried a hint of chill.
"Here we are, let's get off!"
Captain Xing parked the vehicle and they all got out, standing at the foot of the mountain, gazing up at the towering peak that they had never climbed before.
"Let's go! It's getting dark, and we need to reach the village before nightfall," Captain Xing said, looking at the narrow path.
"Are we really just going to rush in like this?" Linyuan asked.
"I've already notified the officers; they'll be here soon. Don't worry!"
Knowing that Captain Xing had informed the police, they felt reassured. Although they knew he was with the police, if they encountered many enemies, even Captain Xing might struggle to handle it. They also needed to ensure his safety, especially since he had a wife and children at home to care for.
With their own thoughts in mind, they began their ascent up the mountain. Even though it wasn't their first time here, they still felt nervous. It was already spring; the grass was starting to sprout, and new leaves were budding on the trees. Everything looked so harmonious and beautiful. If it weren't for that damned Murder Case, this would truly be a great scenic spot where many students might come to play and unwind.
Although there were still many fallen leaves on the ground, the desolation of winter was gone. At that moment, seeing such a scene lightened their previously heavy hearts. The air was fresh, making their earlier unpleasantness seem to vanish in an instant, and their steps became lighter.
Linyuan couldn't help but hum a tune, seemingly forgetting her worries and fears.
Captain Xing was surprised by their demeanor. These kids had a good mindset; in such an environment, others might have been scared to tears or hiding far away. Yet they had the courage to investigate alongside him. Even if they felt fear, they could quickly calm down—something he himself might not have been able to do after ten years as a police officer!
"Look over there!" Linyuan suddenly stopped and pointed to a spot not far away before quickly running over. She picked something up from the grass and exclaimed loudly, "It's fabric from Zuo Yi's clothes."
Su Jin'er and the others hurried over as well. It was a piece of white shirt fabric with a red stain on it that looked like blood.
"How can you be sure it's Zuo Yi's?" Captain Xing asked in confusion.
"Because of this bloodstain, I accidentally cut my hand. He panicked and used his own clothes to bandage it; the band-aid was applied later."
Linyuan said as she raised her right hand, revealing a band-aid on her pinky finger.
"It seems that Zuo Yi really came here, and he seemed to know something would happen, leaving behind clues."
"He's such an idiot. Knowing something would go wrong, why did he still come?" Linyuan said, her eyes reddening again.
Su Jin'er thought for a moment and said, "Maybe he came to save Chu Feifan."
Everyone looked at her in confusion.
"Didn't he receive a phone call at that time? Someone must have told him that Chu Feifan was in the village, so he rushed here without thinking. However, he was also afraid something would happen to him, so he wrote the letters CZ and left behind a piece of his shirt stained with blood on the way. He must have known we would come looking for him; he was gambling with his life."
Su Jin'er's words made Linyuan even more worried, while Captain Xing looked at her with admiration. Although he knew Su Jin'er was smart, he didn't expect her to deduce so much from such a small clue.
