"Jin'er, look at this!" Linyuan picked up a gray notebook from the ground; it was Zhang Junsheng's diary.
"Could it be that Captain Xing was really murdered?" Su Jin'er took the diary but felt its weight.
She flipped through the diary again but found nothing useful, aside from a mention of a girl he had liked.
She gripped the notebook tightly, her knuckles turning pale from the pressure.
Furrowing her brow, she brought the diary closer and opened to the first page, where the name Zhang Junsheng was written. However, the first stroke of the character "Zhang" seemed unusually long, as if it had been added later. The notebook had no pockets or hidden papers, so what could this additional stroke signify?
She stared at the gray notebook in confusion.
Linyuan noticed this detail too and said, "I remember when I watched 'My Fair Princess,' Ziwei mentioned that there is a type of ink that only reveals itself when soaked in water or heated. Do you think Zhang Junsheng might have used this method?"
Su Jin'er remained silent. If such ink existed, that would be good; but what if it didn't? At least she had never seen it for herself. She traced her finger over the blank space before Zhang Junsheng's name and then smiled lightly, realizing something.
Seeing her smile, Linyuan asked curiously, "What did you discover?"
"Feel this area carefully."
Linyuan took the notebook and cautiously touched it, then suddenly understood. "So that's how it is! But can you tell what word it is?"
"It should be the name of the person we've been trying to find."
"You mean the girl that Zhang Junsheng liked?"
"Exactly!" A sudden voice startled them both.
"Where have you been, Captain Xing?"
Turning around, Linyuan asked excitedly upon seeing Captain Xing.
"Oh! Just some personal matters."
Linyuan pouted and chuckled to himself.
Captain Xing pretended not to notice and said, "Those two words are Dreamer, right? Jin'er."
Su Jin'er nodded; it was indeed Dreamer. This must be the name of the girl that Zhang Junsheng liked. But what did his death have to do with her?
She found it hard to understand.
"I just called Jiang Jie and asked her to look into the case regarding Zhang Jun's death. The record at the time stated it was a suicide, but I think it can't be that simple."
"Can I take a look at those materials?" Su Jin'er asked quietly.
She thought Captain Xing would refuse, but to her surprise, he nodded in agreement.
"Let's go! I've already asked her to bring the materials. We'll wait for her back at school."
Sitting in the Pavilion, none of them spoke; each was lost in their own thoughts. Su Jin'er felt a whirlwind of emotions inside her. She tried hard not to think too negatively, but the bodies of Wen Shishi and Du Xiaonan kept flashing through her mind, and she could even see Chu Feifan covered in blood pleading for help.
She painfully closed her eyes and prayed in her heart for both Chu Feifan and Zuo Yi to return safely.
Linyuan kept holding her phone, continuously pressing something, seemingly texting Zuo Yi. She had lost count of how many calls she had made and how many messages she had left, but Zuo Yi had not replied at all. Su Jin'er looked at her, but she herself did not dare to make a call. She was afraid of hearing that sweet female voice on the other end, a voice that once sounded beautiful now felt exceptionally harsh in her ears.
Su Jin'er turned her head to look at the girls' dormitory building. Originally, there were four of them in the dormitory, but now only she and Linyuan remained. One had permanently left, and the other was a suspect in the murder of her own sister, locked up in the police station. Thinking about this made her nose tingle and her eyes dry and uncomfortable, without a single tear.
It seemed Linyuan had finished sending the message; she placed her phone on the stone bench beside her and took a deep breath while looking at the sky. Suddenly, the phone she had just set down rang. She jumped in surprise and hurriedly picked it up, but in her panic, the phone fell to the ground. She stared at the phone on the floor in terror but did not dare to reach down to pick it up. A bad premonition surged in her heart as she stared blankly at the ringing phone.
Captain Xing picked up the phone and looked at it, saying, "It's Zuo Yi. Are you sure you don't want to answer?"
Linyuan's body jolted. She hurriedly snatched the phone back, but her trembling fingers hesitated to press the answer button, and her breathing became rapid.
She pressed the answer button and held the phone to her ear. "Hello!"
However, there was no familiar voice from Zuo Yi on the other end, only a dead silence. She felt like her heart was about to leap out of her chest, its beats heavy like drums.
She glanced at Su Jin'er, tears welling up in her eyes.
Su Jin'er gestured for her to ask again.
"Zuo Yi, is that you?"
This time, there was sound on the other end. She listened intently; at first, it was a very faint noise, then gradually it grew louder but turned into a series of **sounds**, not painful sounds but rather embarrassing ones that made Linyuan's face instantly flush red. The noise felt as if it were ringing right next to her ear. Suddenly angry, she threw the phone to the ground.
Su Jin'er looked at her in confusion. "What happened? Was it Zuo Yi?"
"I don't know!" Linyuan said angrily, tears streaming down her face. While she was worried sick over here, he was out having fun. Damn Zuo Yi! She would never care about him again. Initially, she thought if he returned safely, she would confess to him; now that was out of the question.
Tears continued to fall uncontrollably.
“Xiaoyuan, what’s wrong?” Su Jin'er asked, wrapping her arms around her trembling shoulders in comfort.
“Forget Zuo Yi, just ignore him,” Linyuan cried, burying her face in Jin'er's shoulder.
Jin'er glanced at the phone scattered on the ground and then looked at Captain Xing. She gently patted Linyuan's back, knowing that with her so emotionally charged, it was best to wait until she calmed down before asking what had happened.
At that moment, Jiang Jie approached them. “Criminal Investigation Team, I brought the information you requested.”
“Oh!” Captain Xing took the file bag she handed over and then asked, “Have the autopsy reports for those two come out yet?”
“Not yet, but the coroner said that Du Xiaonan's cause of death is very strange. The wounds are unusual and don’t look like they were inflicted by a human.”
“What do you mean?” Captain Xing paused in his task of opening the file bag and looked at Jiang Jie. “What do you mean?”
“There are three large holes in Du Xiaonan's body. Those holes weren’t made by knives or swords, nor by blunt objects. We still need to examine them further, and her heart is missing.”
“What?” Su Jin'er asked in surprise. She remembered there was no hole where her heart was supposed to be! How could it be missing?
Linyuan also forgot her tears, her eyes widening in shock.
“We’ll have to wait for the coroner's final judgment for specifics.” After a pause, Jiang Jie continued, “As for the Dreamer case, there’s very little information available; this is all we could find. So far, no one has caught the Killer.”
“Dreamer is dead?” Su Jin'er asked in astonishment.
"Well, when I saw the name Dreamer in the diary, I contacted Jiang Jie about the case from back then. The thing is, there are very few people who know about this case, and what's even stranger is that several officers who handled this case have mysteriously died," Captain Xing said as he took out the documents from the file bag and began to read.
"You mean everyone related to that case is dead?" Linyuan asked, still with tears on her face.
"Not everyone is dead; some have gone insane and are still in a mental hospital!" Jiang Jie replied.
"How could that happen?"
"At the time, this case was very sensational. Many people speculated about the cause of Dreamer's death. Some said Dreamer was murdered and came back for revenge, which is why those police officers either died or went mad. Others claimed Dreamer committed suicide, and after death, the Vengeful Spirit wreaked havoc on innocents. There were all sorts of theories, causing widespread panic, and eventually, the case was suppressed," Jiang Jie explained while looking at Su Jin'er.
Captain Xing frowned and looked at Jiang Jie in confusion. "When did this happen? How come I know nothing about it?"
Jiang Jie shrugged and said, "Six years ago! Where were you six years ago?"
Captain Xing furrowed his brow and thought for a moment. "Six years ago?"
He paused for a moment; six years ago, his mother had suddenly passed away, and he had taken leave to handle her funeral. Later, his father fell ill, so he stayed home to take care of him. Coincidentally, that year his wife was also pregnant, which is why he wasn't at the police station.
