After resting for a while, she slowly stood up. Although her legs were still weak and her head was still dizzy, she could move forward slowly. The forest had become foggy at some point, with black mist wrapping around the trunks of every tree and the branches, even the newly sprouted leaves turned into a strange black, resembling little black snakes hissing.
She looked up at the sky, which was divided into countless pieces by the branches. The distant sky was already tinged with light, dawn was approaching. As long as it got bright, she could escape this forest.
Her eyelids grew heavier, and the feeling of fear faded away, replaced by an overwhelming sense of fatigue. She leaned against a tree again and closed her eyes, allowing her constantly tense mind to rest.
Unknowingly, she dozed off.
When she woke up, the sky was already bright. She shielded her eyes with her hand and waited for them to adjust before standing up to look at the blue sky, feeling elated.
"Finally made it through that difficult night." She stretched her arms wide and comfortably yawned.
Her clothes were covered in snow, and the dried blood had stuck to them, making them stiff and uncomfortable to wear. However, there was nothing she could do about it; she wished someone would appear to find her and take her to the police station. But even if someone were here and happened to see her, they would probably be scared away!
She looked at the sun that had just risen above the horizon and determined her direction. After walking for a short distance, she saw a wall about two meters high. The red bricks were covered with some moss, and there were puddles on the ground; this place rarely saw sunlight and was much more humid than others. She frowned at the wall, feeling it looked familiar but couldn't recall where she had seen it before; she just stared blankly.
Suddenly, she smiled happily. Wasn't this wall next to the Old Laboratory Building of Yijiang Medical College? If it really was that wall, then it meant she was close to where she had been held captive. But why couldn’t she remember such a wall near the school?
She looked around and moved several relatively large stones together on the ground. Carefully, she stood on top of them, preparing to climb over the wall. Since the stones were hastily gathered, they weren't very stable. Just as her hand touched the top of the wall, all the stones beneath her suddenly collapsed. She let out a scream and clung tightly to the edge of the wall as her body dangled in mid-air. After struggling to pull herself up onto the wall, she realized that on the other side wasn't like this side; instead of being over two meters high, there was a deep pit over five meters deep. Combined with the height of the wall, it was equivalent to three stories high—if she jumped down, even if she didn't die, she'd likely break something.
Fortunately, the pit wasn't very wide; as long as she walked two or three meters along the top of the wall to her right, she'd reach solid ground. The top of the wall was narrow enough for only one foot to fit sideways. She carefully stood up and slowly moved forward; although it was only a two or three-meter distance, it felt very difficult. Despite not being afraid of heights and having good balance, after not eating for a day and running so far, she had exhausted too much energy and felt weak.
Thankfully, she safely crossed over that pit and then slid down halfway along the wall before jumping down. Once on solid ground, she realized this wasn't her familiar campus nor did it have that Old Laboratory Building that made her feel uncomfortable; it was just an open area with no buildings—only small blades of grass just starting to sprout.
Could it be that she remembered incorrectly?
She looked around in confusion and felt nervous; this place seemed so desolate that there surely wouldn't be anyone around. She didn't dare run around recklessly. Looking back at the wall's edge made climbing back impossible; perhaps if she climbed back over now, that pervert would be waiting for her on the other side. She brushed off the dirt from her clothes and glanced at the sun now high in the sky. She took off her outer jacket; although her inner clothes were stained with blood too, thankfully it wasn't very noticeable.
She walked along the edge of the wall to the right while thinking that if she couldn't find a way out soon, she'd have to climb back over—even if caught, it would be better than dying in this desolate place. However, fortunately for her, there was no need to turn back because she spotted her familiar campus—the Old Laboratory Building that once terrified her now appeared so welcoming in sight. The reason she hadn't seen it earlier was that her current position was higher than that side of the school; otherwise, she'd have noticed it sooner. She had always thought there was a mountain behind the school but had no idea that behind it lay an open area instead of a mountain.
Perhaps the school left this piece of land for future expansion.
She thought to herself.
Then she turned back to look at the mountain behind her, wondering how many unknown things were hidden within it! Never mind, she thought, being able to return to school safely was already fortunate.
However—
She frowned at her blood-stained clothes. What would her classmates think if they saw her like this? She couldn't just go back without clothes! That would make things even worse. She helplessly looked at her dead phone; it had no battery when she needed it, but when she didn't, it seemed to have plenty of power. Despite thinking this, she pressed the power button, not holding much hope, but trying was better than not trying.
To her surprise, the phone actually powered on. She remembered that this phone was a birthday gift from her mother. At that time, her mother had mentioned that it could charge with sunlight. Since she had never used that feature, she had forgotten about it. The phone had been in her hand for a while; perhaps it had charged a little. Excited, she dialed Linyuan's number. Just like last time, the phone rang once before being answered.
Once connected, she quickly said, "Xiaoyuan, my phone is about to die. Bring me a change of clothes and come to the Old Laboratory Building; I'll be waiting there—"
But before she could finish her sentence, the phone shut off automatically.
Linyuan held the phone, still processing what had just happened when a beeping sound came from the line. She looked blankly at Captain Xing and said, "Jin'er asked me to bring her a change of clothes to the Old Laboratory Building. The call got cut off before she finished; I think she must be there."
Saying this, she began searching for Su Jin'er's clothes and grabbed a set of white sportswear before rushing out of the dormitory building. Due to Su Jin'er's disappearance, the school temporarily allowed Captain Xing and others in the girls' dormitory but restricted them from wandering around the hallways to avoid disturbing other students.
Hearing Linyuan's words, Captain Xing quickly notified others to head to the Old Laboratory Building. They gathered what they needed and dashed out of the dormitory.
Su Jin'er looked at her phone as it powered off again. Thankfully, she had conveyed the main point clearly; although she hadn't finished speaking, Linyuan would surely understand her meaning.
The path ahead was a slope; going down would be easy. She just didn't know if there were any students below. If there weren't any, that would be fine; but if someone spotted her, she really wouldn't know how to explain herself.
Although there was a small grove below, she clearly knew that the grove had another name, "Lover's Grove." Because of the Old Laboratory, many students were unwilling to come here, but some brave couples who did not believe in the Demon would come. Of course, although they claimed not to be afraid, they only came during the day; it was much quieter at night.
If she stood here, Linyuan and the others would never discover her because there was a wall separating this place from the campus. She had known for a long time that there was a wall behind the Old Laboratory, so she also knew there was a door, but she had never known what that door was for. It was only by chance that she ended up here and found out.
She slowly walked down the slope and stood under the wall. The door was on the far right, and if one did not look closely, it would be impossible to notice, which is why very few people knew about it.
Just like before, she walked along the wall and quickly found the door. She pulled on it several times with all her strength, but it did not open; it was locked from the other side. Feeling a bit discouraged, she leaned against the door and sat down on the ground.
Would Linyuan and the others be able to find this place?
Su Jin'er boredly tried to pull out a dry blade of grass from the ground but unexpectedly found that she could not pull it out. She looked at the grass in confusion; it was clearly withered, so why couldn't she pull it out?
She tried again with more force but still could not remove it. Shaking her head in frustration, she wondered why she was having such trouble with a blade of grass.
She decided to ignore the little grass and turned her head to look around. This place resembled a trench dug during wartime; hiding here would definitely keep one from being discovered.
