On the way back to the dormitory, Su Jin'er kept pondering whether she should tell the police about her suspicions. Although Captain Xing seemed friendly, would he believe her? The police relied on evidence, and her doubts were merely intuition.
Thinking about this made her feel a bit discouraged; after all, she wasn't Sherlock Holmes—she didn't possess his intelligence or wisdom.
Upon opening the dorm room door, Linyuan was still asleep, but Li Yiqian was nowhere to be seen. One corner of the blanket was turned down, as if its owner had just gotten out of bed. However, she knew that Li Yiqian had left a long time ago. But where could she have gone?
She walked over to Linyuan's bed and nudged her, saying, "Xiaoyuan, wake up; it's time for breakfast."
Linyuan stirred but still did not wake up.
Su Jin'er found it strange. Although Linyuan loved to sleep, she knew that her friend had a light sleep and would wake up at any sound. They were quite similar in that regard, but today Linyuan's behavior felt odd.
She nudged her again, but there was still no response. A sudden fear gripped her—what if something happened to Linyuan?
She set down what she was holding and climbed onto the bed. When she lifted the blanket, she discovered that the person lying there was not Linyuan but Li Yiqian, whom she thought was not in the dormitory.
So where did Linyuan go?
A bad premonition made her body tremble.
She shook Li Yiqian awake forcefully. Watching her rub her eyes and look dazed, it seemed she had no idea what was going on.
"This isn't my bed?" Li Yiqian said in surprise as she looked at the blanket covering her.
"Yes, you're sleeping in Xiaoyuan's bed, but where did Xiaoyuan go?"
Su Jin'er climbed down from the bunk. She remembered that when she called out for breakfast, Linyuan was still there. That meant Linyuan must have left while she went to eat. However, when she returned, Li Yiqian was not there either. She had searched the dormitory and found no sign of Li Yiqian. If it was Li Yiqian who disappeared at that time while Linyuan remained, then where was Li Yiqian?
She looked into Li Yiqian's puzzled eyes, unable to determine if she was pretending.
If Li Yiqian wasn't lying at that moment and truly didn't know how she ended up in Linyuan's bed, it meant there was a third person present in the dormitory.
Seeing Li Yiqian already out of bed, she stared into her eyes and said, "Qian Qian, tell me, do you really not know how you ended up in Linyuan's bed?"
Li Yiqian quietly looked at her, showing no signs of evasion despite the questioning. "I truly don't know."
Su Jin'er lowered her head, her gaze unwavering. She recalled having read somewhere that no matter how strong a person's willpower is, when making eye contact, if they lie, their eyes will flicker. So she was certain that Li Yiqian was not lying.
Right, how could she be so foolish? That person could have easily placed the sleeping Li Yiqian under the bed, but to ensure she wouldn't wake up, something must have been done.
"Did you feel anything strange while you were sleeping?"
Li Yiqian rubbed her temples; her head hurt. "I remember knowing when you left. Then I smelled a pungent odor, and after that, I lost consciousness."
A pungent odor?
Could it have been ether?
"I'll bring back some food; you wash up and eat! After you're done, come downstairs; we need to discuss something."
Seeing Su Jin'er's serious expression, Li Yiqian nodded. Linyuan was missing; she must be very worried.
Su Jin'er went downstairs to find Captain Xing and the others. As soon as she reached the bottom of the stairs, she saw Chu Feifan. Her nose felt sour, and tears welled up in her eyes. She took a deep breath to calm herself.
"Jin'er, what's wrong? Why does your face look so pale?" Chu Feifan asked with concern.
"Xiaoyuan—she's missing!"
"What? How could that be?" Seeing her face grow even paler, he gently embraced her and said, "Don't worry; maybe she woke up and found you gone and went out to look for you. She just hasn't returned yet."
Captain Xing noticed her unusual complexion and approached just in time to hear her words.
"Have you tried looking for her?"
After I sent off Officer Li, I returned to the dormitory. When I got back, I found that Li Yiqian was not there. I thought she had gone out and didn't pay much attention, so I wanted to invite Xiaoyuan to dinner. However, she said she was tired, so I let her sleep. At that time, Xiaoyuan was still there. When I returned, I discovered that Li Yiqian was sleeping on her bed, while Xiaoyuan was nowhere to be found. Qian Qian mentioned that she smelled a pungent odor after I left. Su Jin'er tried to stabilize her emotions.
Captain Xing looked at Su Jin'er and asked, "What are your thoughts?"
Su Jin'er blinked: "If Li Yiqian isn't lying, it means there was a third person in our dormitory. That person must have knocked out Li Yiqian after I left and then placed her under the bed. When I left again, they took Linyuan away and put Li Yiqian on Linyuan's bed."
"Then why do you think they did that?" Captain Xing continued to ask.
"Could it be..." Chu Feifan frowned.
At that moment, Zuo Yi walked over from the boys' dormitory with his hands in his pockets, whistling.
"Jin'er, you wouldn't know some secret about Killer, would you? Killer might have taken Xiaoyuan to threaten you."
Su Jin'er furrowed her brows. If that were true, she could probably guess who had taken Xiaoyuan. If it really was her, there would only be one reason for her to do so.
"Captain Xing, this case can basically be considered closed. I think I know what happened. Feifan, you and Zuo Yi take Captain Xing and the others to the village to catch someone! Hopefully, he hasn't run away." Su Jin'er said softly with her head down.
"And you?"
"I'll wait for the person who took Xiaoyuan to come find me!" Su Jin'er forced a bitter smile.
"You know who Killer is?" Captain Xing asked with a smile.
"Not just me; Feifan and Zuo Yi know too. We just don't have evidence yet. But if we catch him and I find Linyuan while also bringing back Li Yiqian, I'm sure they'll tell us everything."
"Alright! Catching Killer will save us a lot of effort!"
"Jin'er, can I accompany you?" Chu Feifan said worriedly.
"He will definitely make me go alone, so you should stay with Captain Xing and the others! After all, he is your brother."
Su Jin'er kept her head down, worried. Although she knew Linyuan was not in immediate danger, she had not yet figured out how to deal with that person. If pushed too hard, they might act recklessly.
"Feifan, wait a moment!" Su Jin'er ran over and whispered something in Chu Feifan's ear, then looked at him and nodded seriously.
Chu Feifan, though confused, nodded in response.
After they left, Su Jin'er returned to the dormitory where Li Yiqian was sitting at the table eating. Seeing Su Jin'er enter, she stood up and asked, "Did you find Xiaoyuan?"
Su Jin'er shook her head. "Qian Qian, I need you to tell me everything you know."
"But I've already told you everything I know," Li Yiqian said, biting her lip tightly, tears welling up in her eyes.
Su Jin'er closed her eyes. It seemed she still wasn't willing to tell the truth. She had basically pieced together everything that had happened; she just lacked evidence. However, she believed that as long as they gathered together, finding evidence would not be a problem.
"Alright! But you once admitted to killing Zhang Yang, so now you must come with me to the police station to get Du Xiaonan back."
"Jin'er, I'm your sister. Are you really going to send me to the police station?"
Su Jin'er looked at her. "Xiaonan is like my sister; she hasn't done anything wrong. Can you really bear to let her take the fall for you?"
Li Yiqian lowered her head, her fingers intertwining as she struggled to hold back tears that finally fell onto her hand. "Fine, I'll turn myself in."
Su Jin'er leaned against the bed, feeling exhausted. There was still one question she couldn't resolve, but now was not the time to ask it.
Suddenly, her phone on the bed rang with a text message alert. She quickly picked it up; it was an unfamiliar number.
"Come quickly to the grove by the edge of town, or you'll regret it!"
Su Jin'er frowned. "Let's go! We need to head to the police station."
Li Yiqian glanced at her and asked, "Isn't this a message from the person who took Xiaoyuan?"
Su Jin'er squinted at her and asked, "How did you know?"
"I— I guessed!"
Su Jin'er glanced at her, remaining silent as she stood at the door waiting for her.
Li Yiqian slowly put on her coat, tightly pursing her lips, seemingly holding back something.
Captain Xing left two officers behind to assist Su Jin'er in taking Li Yiqian away.
"Don't put handcuffs on her; this is a school, and I don't want her to be seen like that."
Upon hearing Su Jin'er's words, the two officers exchanged glances and put away the handcuffs.
