Watching Li Jing's figure disappear around the corner of the dormitory building, Su Jin'er sighed. Li Jing's sudden departure only made her more suspicious of her. If this Li Jing was not a police officer, then Su Jin'er had to admire her caution. However, now she was full of flaws that raised doubts.
She shook her head and turned back toward the dormitory. The criminal investigation team had arrived, so this case should be coming to an end!
She felt very tired, not physically, but mentally exhausted.
Back in the dormitory, Linyuan was still sleeping, but Li Yiqian was nowhere to be seen. She pushed open the bathroom door to take a look but did not find her. Just a moment ago, she and Li Jing were downstairs; if Li Yiqian had gone down, she would have definitely seen her, but she hadn't.
Su Jin'er patted Linyuan: "Xiaoyuan, it's noon. Let's go eat!"
Linyuan stirred but did not get up, only murmuring, "Jin'er, I'm so tired. You go eat."
"Okay! You can sleep a bit more. I'll bring you food later."
"Mm!"
Su Jin'er walked to her desk and took out a mirror to check herself. Her eyes were slightly puffy, and her complexion was a bit pale, but it wasn't too serious. She smiled at her reflection and then changed into a white jacket before leaving the dormitory.
She called Chu Feifan; this was something he had specifically asked her to do when they parted ways, even though she didn't want to disturb his rest.
"Hello! Jin'er, are you awake?" Hearing Chu Feifan's gentle voice calmed her previously irritated mood significantly.
"Yes! Did I disturb you?"
"No, I just got up too."
Su Jin'er knew he was lying because his voice sounded lazy, and she could still hear him getting dressed.
She didn't call him out on it: "I'm waiting for you at the Pavilion."
"Chu Feifan," she said with a smile, "I'll be there soon."
Su Jin'er leisurely walked towards the pavilion. Having been at this school for over six months, she had yet to fully experience college life before being swept into a murder case. Watching the students come and go in the campus, she felt a sense of desolation wash over her in this familiar yet strange environment. Lives that had just begun to blossom had vanished from this land, leaving no clue as to how they had died. She looked up at the blue sky; the sunlight was already somewhat blinding, yet they would never see it again.
"Su Jin'er!"
A familiar voice pulled her back to reality. She squinted at the girl in front of her, heavily made up.
"What? Have you forgotten me so soon?"
"Xu Lingling?"
"Oh! You still remember me! I thought you might have forgotten all about me!" Xu Lingling crossed her arms and looked at Su Jin'er with an imposing demeanor.
Su Jin'er smiled and replied, "You didn't come to check if I've forgotten you, did you?"
Although Xu Lingling's tone was sharp, Su Jin'er knew she was also afraid of herself. She recalled that in psychology, crossing one's arms is an unconscious protective gesture, something even the person doing it might not realize.
"Of course not. I'm just here to tell you that I've set my sights on Chu Feifan. If you know what's good for you, step aside."
Su Jin'er smiled and said, "Chu Feifan is a person; he has the right to choose who he wants to be with. It's not something we can decide for him. So if you really like him, you need to win his heart and make him willingly accept you, rather than trying to intimidate me into stepping aside. What you're doing only shows me that you lack confidence in winning his heart."
"You—" Xu Lingling glared at her angrily before sneering, "Then let's wait and see! Who wins and who loses is still uncertain!"
"I don't want to compete with you. If Chu Feifan chooses you, I will gladly step aside."
"That's what you said; remember your words today!" Xu Lingling said before turning and walking away.
Watching her walk in ten-inch high heels, she was really worried that if she walked so fast, she might twist her ankle.
As Xu Lingling just left, Chu Feifan appeared. He seemed to have run over, with a layer of fine sweat on his forehead.
"Why are you running so fast?"
"Afraid you'd be waiting too long! Plus, it's good exercise," Chu Feifan grinned.
"Fool!" Su Jin'er glanced behind him and asked, "Where's Zuo Yi?"
"He said he was tired and is still sleeping. Linyuan isn't also sleeping, right?"
"Yeah! Those two really are a perfect match."
"What about us?"
"We? We're friends! By the way, you and Arian..."
"We didn't happen." Chu Feifan said nervously.
"Why are you so tense? I haven't finished my sentence yet!"
"Oh!" Chu Feifan lowered his head. He was actually very afraid of Su Jin'er bringing up this topic. Although nothing had happened between him and Arian, they had held a wedding in front of everyone last year. Even though it wasn't his choice, he still feared that Jin'er would mind.
Seeing the unnatural expression on Chu Feifan's face, she changed the subject: "Li Jing came to say goodbye to me just now and even said something that sounded like a warning."
"She said goodbye to you? Why?"
They left the Pavilion and headed towards the school cafeteria.
“She said it was because the detectives arrived, so she didn’t need to stay here anymore. She also told me not to speak about things I don’t know or understand.”
“Her actions will only make us more suspicious of her. Or does she have another motive?”
Su Jin'er shook her head, “Forget it, let’s just go eat! The detectives might arrive soon anyway.”
“Yeah! By the way, Gaya Ze is quite efficient in getting things done!” His voice carried a noticeable hint of amusement.
Su Jin'er turned to look at him and noticed the bloodshot in his eyes and the dark circles under them.
“Did you not sleep earlier?”
“I did sleep, how could I not?” Chu Feifan replied awkwardly. He couldn’t tell her that he had been thinking about the entire case and what Chu Bufan had told him, and that he had just fallen asleep when she called him!
“By the way, are we going to the cafeteria?” Chu Feifan suddenly realized and asked.
“Yes!”
“Let’s eat out instead! The food in the cafeteria isn’t good.” He was so hungry he could eat a whole cow, and the cafeteria food was neither nutritious nor tasty; it would be better to go to a small restaurant outside!
Su Jin'er thought for a moment and said, “Alright then!”
During their days in the small village, they hardly ate anything, with the only decent meal being on the morning of Arian's death.
They arrived at a restaurant outside the school and ordered a few small dishes. Su Jin'er glanced at the clock hanging on the wall; it was already 12:15.
She picked up the disposable cup from the table and slowly took a sip of water. This was her first time having a meal alone with Chu Feifan, and she felt a bit nervous, relying on drinking tea to cover it up.
When the Boss brought over the small dishes they ordered, she had already finished the entire cup of water. Chu Feifan looked at her slightly flushed cheeks and smiled.
"What are you laughing at?"
"Oh! It's nothing, I just feel like it's been a long time since I've had such a quiet meal. I feel very happy right now!"
Su Jin'er frowned; shouldn't that be her line?
"Alright, let's eat quickly! There are two lazybones waiting for us to deliver their food!"
In truth, he didn't want her to eat quickly. At that moment, he wished this meal would never end, wanting time to stay frozen in that moment forever.
As they were finishing up their meal, the police team arrived just in time. They packed up the food they were taking back, paid the bill, and left the restaurant.
Back on campus, they encountered members of the police team along with Gaya Ze, who smiled as he introduced them.
"Feifan, this is Captain Xing Yongliang, whom I've mentioned to you often."
Chu Feifan walked over politely and shook hands with Captain Xing. "Hello, Captain Xing!"
"Hello! You must be Chu Feifan, the second son of the president! You really are quite impressive!"
Seeing Captain Xing's smiling face and friendly demeanor eased Su Jin'er's burden significantly. She had originally thought that members of the police team were all serious, especially the captain.
"This is Su Jin'er!" Gaya Ze pointed to Su Jin'er, who was still in a daze.
Su Jin'er walked over and shook her hand, saying, "Captain Xing, hello!"
Captain Xing smiled and greeted her in return, then said, "I need you to tell me everything you know."
"Sure! We will cooperate, and we hope to catch the Killer soon."
"Don't you know who the Killer is?" Captain Xing asked.
"The Killer might be Chu Bufan, my brother," Chu Feifan replied.
Xing Yongliang frowned and said, "How about this? You finish what you're doing now, and we'll find a convenient place to sit down and talk."
After he spoke, he pointed to the food that Chu Feifan was still holding.
Chu Feifan nodded apologetically, "Zuo Yi and Linyuan also know some details, so we'll go call them."
