It is already March 10th today, the third day since they arrived here and the second day of Chu Feifan and Arian's wedding. No one expected that Chu Feifan would be forced into marriage here, and this bizarre situation has turned their group of friends into almost strangers.
They are still locked in a dark room, but the small space has been divided in half with a partition, each side containing a bed for the men and women separately. This idea was suggested by Chu Feifan so they could at least rest.
Su Jin'er sat on her bed, reflecting on all the bad things that had happened. She remembered Arian mentioning some kind of wizard last night and found it strange that someone would still claim to be a wizard; it was quite amusing. However, she wished they could move around freely.
"Jin'er, it's so boring here! We're locked up like prisoners every day; I'm going crazy," Linyuan said, playing with her fingers and sounding aggrieved.
"Why don't you go with Zuo Yi and the others? They should let you go."
"And what about you? Aren't you coming with us?"
Su Jin'er shook her head. She firmly believed that all the answers were here; she just couldn't figure out what they were yet.
"If you don't go, then I won't go either."
Su Jin'er looked at her helplessly. "I wonder if Feifan has managed to find out anything?"
"You still expect him to? All men are the same; they can't think straight when they see a beautiful woman."
"Linyuan, don't blame him. I think he's suffering more than any of us right now." At that moment, Zuo Yi and Gaya Ze came over from the other side of the partition.
"Hmph! You’re all men; of course, you’ll defend him. He’s probably enjoying himself in a cozy place right now!" Linyuan pouted in dissatisfaction.
Zuo Yi looked at her helplessly. "Alright, alright, you're right. I won't argue with you."
Linyuan mumbled to herself, "Of course," and fell silent.
"Jin'er, are we really going to sneak into that wizard's place tonight?"
Before Su Jin'er could respond, Linyuan said, "Of course we are. Do you think I'm joking with you, or are you scared?"
Linyuan nudged Zuo Yi with her elbow.
"How could I be scared? Are you kidding me?" Zuo Yi exclaimed, wide-eyed.
Over the past couple of days, Linyuan and Zuo Yi had suddenly started bickering, which made their days of confinement less dull.
The sky gradually darkened, and the inky blackness was devoid of stars. It seemed to be foggy, enveloping the entire village in a mist that created a sense of oppression.
"The weather was fine a few days ago; why do we encounter fog whenever we have plans?" Linyuan said, extending her hand to see her fingers in the darkness. "I really can't see my own hand!"
Suddenly, a beam of light shone on her hand. She turned her head to look at Zuo Yi and asked, "What are you doing?"
"You said you couldn't see your fingers, but now you can," he replied.
Linyuan reached out to hit him.
"Zuo Yi, where did you find that flashlight?" Su Jin'er asked curiously.
At that moment, they were hiding next to the nearest house to the mage's residence. Since this house was temporarily unoccupied, they could boldly conceal themselves there.
"It was given to me by that unreliable guy you think of. He had Arian come find me." He looked at Linyuan while saying the first part of the sentence, and then turned to Su Jin'er for the second part, as Chu Feifan wanted to see if Su Jin'er would get jealous. Although he had already told him that Su Jin'er was upset, he didn't believe it.
"You—told him?"
"Yeah, we definitely need a flashlight for our operation tonight. If we don't borrow from him, should we borrow from the mage?" Zuo Yi said deliberately.
Su Jin'er remained silent, her expression calm as she quietly gazed at the mage's house.
Seeing that the lights in the mage's house were still on, they had no choice but to wait in place. They were on someone else's territory, and if those people really killed them, the police would likely have a hard time finding this place. To be safe, they had to be cautious.
Suddenly, a cold wind began to blow, sending chills down their spines. Su Jin'er couldn't help but rub her shoulders.
"Someone's coming," Linyuan pointed toward the mage's house.
Sure enough, a person was heading toward the mage's residence; it was the young man who had invited them to the wedding yesterday.
"What is he going to do at the mage's house?" Linyuan asked in confusion.
"Maybe the mage sent him; otherwise, he wouldn't be so brazen," Zuo Yi replied, seemingly unable to withstand the cold as his voice trembled.
"Let's wait a bit longer," Gaya Ze frowned, feeling that something was bound to happen tonight.
A few people were hiding in the corner, continuing to observe the movements outside the Mage's House. For half an hour, aside from the flickering shadows of the people inside cast by the candles on the window, nothing happened, and their bodies had grown numb from the cold.
Finally, someone inside stood up. A young man opened the door and walked towards his home, while the so-called mage stood at the entrance watching him leave. He still wore a mask on his face. Suddenly, he turned his head, seemingly glancing in their direction without intention. They held their breath, too nervous to make a sound.
The mage did not return inside; he simply stood outside for a moment before turning around to close the door and walking into the forest behind. This undoubtedly gave them a good opportunity.
Watching the mage's figure disappear into the darkness, they let out a sigh of relief.
"That mage shouldn't have seen us, right?" Linyuan rubbed his aching calves.
"In this darkness, how could he possibly see us? Besides—" Zuo Yi's voice trailed off into silence as they looked at him, waiting for him to continue.
"When did the fog disappear?"
Zuo Yi's question made them realize that they hadn't noticed it before; just moments ago, there had been thick fog, but now it was completely gone as if it had only been an illusion.
"It must have been blown away by the wind earlier. Now that the mage is out, let's quickly check for any useful clues!" Su Jin'er kept her eyes fixed on the mage's house.
The door to the mage's house was slightly ajar, as if he had known they were coming and had deliberately left it open for them.
The candles inside were still lit. The moment they pushed open the door, a gust of wind caused the candles to flicker, making the interior appear even more eerie.
The wizard's house was quite strange, rectangular in shape, with the door not in the center but on the far left. The furnishings inside were very simple, almost like a hostel. Against the wall directly opposite the door stood a table over a meter high with drawers. In the middle of the room was a round table with two benches, and at the back was a bed. Other than that, there was nothing else.
"I thought this wizard would be quite wealthy!" Zuo Yi said as he touched the tall table.
"Simplicity is the best way to hide," Su Jin'er remarked, opening the leftmost drawer to take a look. Inside, there were only some candles and a box of matches.
"Such good hiding, this wizard must be extraordinary," Zuo Yi said as he opened the second drawer, only to find it empty. He couldn't help but widen his eyes. "This is too simple."
"Isn't that stating the obvious? If he weren't extraordinary, how could an entire village trust him so much?"
They searched the entire house but found nothing useful, not even any talismans or charms typically used by wizards or priests. They examined every inch of the floor but discovered no secret passages.
"How is this possible? Are we doubting the wrong person? Is this wizard really just a wizard?" Zuo Yi pondered, stroking his chin thoughtfully.
"No, we must have made some mistake. This wizard is definitely not simple, and I have a feeling someone has been watching us from the shadows," Su Jin'er's words sent chills down their spines.
If what she said was true, and someone was indeed watching them without their knowledge, then weren't they in constant danger?
Linyuan shrank his neck and said, "Let's go back! This place is really scary!"
They left the wizard's door ajar and headed towards the abandoned house. However, before they reached it, they stood frozen in place.
Was there someone inside the house?
They were surprised to find that the house, which had just been empty, was now lit with candles, and a figure was moving inside.
The way the figure moved was strange, like the pendulum of a clock.
"Not good, that person has committed suicide."
Gaya Ze's words startled them, and several people quickly ran into the house.
It was that boy!
He had hanged himself from the beam.
Gaya Ze reached out to try to lift him down, but was stopped by Zuo Yi: "Don't touch him; if the villagers come, we won't be able to explain."
"But there might still be a chance to save him," Su Jin'er said anxiously. She couldn't allow anyone to die in front of her.
"Then you save him; I'll go find someone." With that, Zuo Yi ran out.
