Seeing that Li Yiqian had already entered, Chu Feifan and the others followed him in. They shone their flashlights around but did not find anything suspicious.
"How about we check the second floor?" Li Yiqian suggested.
"Why is it that we can't hear any sounds now that we're here?" Linyuan asked.
Su Jin'er thought for a moment and said, "Maybe someone deliberately led us here! Let's go upstairs and take a look."
They cautiously walked toward the stairs, the beam of the flashlight casting shadows around them, making everything seem more eerie.
For some reason, the school's experimental building had wooden floors, which creaked like mice when stepped on after a long time.
"Do you smell something?" Su Jin'er asked.
"What kind of smell?"
Su Jin'er sniffed again and said, "It smells like something rotten and decaying."
Although it wasn't very obvious, it made her feel quite uncomfortable. At that moment, the air around them seemed to be even colder than before.
"Why do I feel like the temperature has dropped?" Linyuan said, rubbing his shoulders.
"The temperature is indeed lower than before, but have you noticed? This cold seems to be coming from upstairs," Chu Feifan said.
"Could there really be something strange upstairs?" Du Xiaonan whispered, glancing nervously at the upper floor.
"I've been here many times, and I don't think there's anything wrong with this building. Besides, I always feel like my sister is here."
"Stop! We really hope your sister isn't here," Linyuan said awkwardly.
"Oh! I'm sorry." Li Yiqian also stuck out his tongue apologetically.
At this moment, they had reached the second floor. The corridor on the second floor was pitch black. They looked around but did not find anything suspicious.
Suddenly, everyone seemed to breathe a sigh of relief. Zuo Yi looked at them and said, "You don't have what you're looking for, right?"
"What do you mean by what we're looking for?" Linyuan said loudly, her voice echoing in the silence around them.
"Why are we only thinking about searching on the second floor? There seems to be more floors above!" Su Jin'er said softly.
Hearing her words, everyone gasped in shock.
Bang—
Just as they were deciding whether to go upstairs, a heavy object fell from above.
Everyone jumped in surprise and looked up at the ceiling in astonishment.
"What—what was that?" Du Xiaonan said, trembling.
"Qian Qian, have you been upstairs?" Su Jin'er asked.
Li Yiqian shook his head.
"Maybe something fell over upstairs! Let's go check it out!" Chu Feifan was the first to step onto the stairs leading to the third floor.
Although the sound was not loud and had a muffled quality, in the stillness of the night, it felt eerie.
"Can we not go up? I'm so scared; it's so creepy here!" Du Xiaonan pressed her body tightly against Su Jin'er.
Not only was she scared, but everyone here was afraid and did not want to come to this haunted place for "exploration" in the middle of the night.
"No way, it might be a thief! As students of the school, we have an obligation to protect the school's equipment," Chu Feifan suddenly said. Since he was going to be the Student Council Chairman, he needed to take responsibility for the students, and today was his duty day.
After saying that, he headed straight upstairs, and Zuo Yi naturally would not let him go up alone.
"Let's go up and take a look too!"
Su Jin'er and Linyuan followed them upstairs, while Li Yiqian eagerly followed as well. Du Xiaonan had no choice but to grit her teeth and follow along.
The Old Laboratory only had three floors, and the third floor was originally used for students to conduct experiments. However, since a new Old Laboratory had been built, this place was no longer in use, and the third floor had become a storage area for junk.
"This really is a pile of junk!" Zuo Yi said while shining his flashlight around. "Chairman, we still know very little about our school! When you have time, you should explore around and learn about our school's history."
"What a strong smell of dust!" Linyuan said while fanning the air with his hand.
Su Jin'er shone her flashlight around; not only did she smell dust, but she also detected a bloody scent. How could there be a bloody smell here?
Suddenly, the beam of light revealed a pile of dark objects. She slowly walked over, and as she got closer, the smell of blood grew stronger. Could it be—
"What is this?" Looking at what lay before her, she almost cried out.
Hearing her voice, everyone slowly approached her.
"Ah—"
Du Xiaonan and Linyuan both screamed simultaneously but were quickly covered by someone’s hand over their mouths, leaving them wide-eyed in terror as they stared at what was on the ground.
Lying on the floor was a corpse with its mouth wide open and eyes bulging. A knife was stabbed into its neck, and blood was slowly oozing out.
Fear once again gripped everyone's hearts as they stared in horror at the corpse on the ground, nearly forgetting to breathe.
"How could this happen?" Zuo Yi said, looking at the body, almost able to feel the warmth of the blood.
Su Jin'er took a deep breath, the cool air entering her lungs painfully.
Was this all premeditated, or was it a re-enactment of history from five years ago? No one could provide an answer.
"Should we call the police?" Seeing such a terrifying scene, Li Yiqian also showed a fearful expression.
"But it's the middle of the night," Linyuan, recovering from his fear, said. "And how are we supposed to explain to the school why we are here at this hour?"
"Let's call the police!" Su Jin'er said softly, her face pale with fear. "I think this is just the beginning of everything."
Hearing her words, everyone gasped in shock.
Suddenly, the sound of police sirens pierced the tranquility of Midnight. Many people grumbled in their blankets, but in this late autumn season, they were too lazy to waste their sleep time on someone else's troubles.
As expected, the six of them were taken back to the police station for questioning.
After an hour-long interrogation, they finally walked out of the police station.
Returning to their dormitory at school, it was already past three o'clock. None of them felt sleepy; they sat on their beds in a daze.
"What do you all think about this?" Su Jin'er suddenly asked. She still had many questions about what had happened, from getting lost during Military Training on the mountain to now two consecutive deaths. Although these events seemed unrelated on the surface, her intuition told her that there must be intricate connections between them.
"I don't know. Right now, all I feel is fear; I can't think of anything else," Du Xiaonan said with a trembling voice.
"I believe this incident is definitely related to my sister's death—without a doubt!" Li Yiqian said confidently while twisting the flashlight in her hand, as if she had already seen the Killer who had murdered her sister.
"Jin'er, just say what you're thinking! We're all so scared!" Linyuan also began to feel frightened.
"I have a question for you, and you must answer me honestly."
"What question?" Linyuan asked anxiously.
"On the night we got lost in the mountains, did any of you have dreams?"
The three of them shuddered involuntarily. Just recalling the dreams from that night sent chills down their spines; the deep-rooted fear had nearly driven them to the brink of collapse. Thankfully, it was just a dream.
"The dream that night was truly terrifying," Du Xiaonan murmured, her voice trembling even more than before.
"My dream was that Zhang Junsheng ran away out of fear, and then Qian Qian suddenly went missing. In our search for the missing Qian Qian, we saw Zhang Junsheng being killed in a strange village," Linyuan finished her story with a shaky voice.
"Yes, my dream was the same as hers. Why did we have the same dream?" Du Xiaonan asked.
"I had a similar dream with Chu Feifan," Su Jin'er said, then she looked at Li Yiqian, who had been silent in the darkness for a long time.
"My dream was a bit different from yours," she suddenly said softly.
"What do you mean?"
"I dreamed that the one who ran away out of fear at first wasn't Zhang Junsheng, but Xu Mengguang. The one who suddenly went missing was Xu Lingling, not me as you mentioned."
After hearing Li Yiqian's words, everyone gasped.
What were the others' dreams like? Was it only Li Yiqian's dream that was different from theirs, or were there others who also had different dreams? Su Jin'er pondered in her heart.
Since Military Training began, everything happening around them had been strange. First, they encountered a woman burning something that looked like bones, then they heard curses, followed by a fleeting White Shadow and eerie cries. Finally, they got lost and fell asleep without realizing it, sharing similar dreams—except for Li Yiqian. Why was Li Yiqian different from them? Did she have something to hide? And what about that strange Zhang Junsheng? What did he know?
After thinking for a long time, she couldn't come up with any reason. At some point, the even sound of breathing filled the dormitory. She smiled lightly; as long as everyone could still sleep, that was good enough.
She glanced at the clock; it was already past five. In a few hours, it would be dawn. She closed her eyes, knowing she had things to do tomorrow!
Uncertain of how long she had slept, Su Jin'er slowly woke up. She propped herself up to get out of bed but found that her body had no strength at all, and her head felt like it was about to explode. Rubbing her forehead, she struggled to sit up.
"Jin'er, what's wrong?" Linyuan rushed over upon seeing Su Jin'er's condition.
"It's nothing; I might have caught a cold last night! My head hurts a bit."
"Then just lie down and continue sleeping! It's Saturday, so there's no class."
"But I need to find someone today!" Feeling a little more strength in her body, she managed to sit up.
"Who are you looking for? Is it about what happened last night?"
She nodded. "I have a feeling this matter won't just end here. Two people are already dead, and I have a premonition that more will continue to be killed. We must stop all of this from happening."
