They turned their heads and saw Du Xiaonan standing by the balcony door.
"Xiaonan? What are you doing here?" Su Jin'er asked.
"I just got back and saw all of you on the balcony. I was going to say hello, but I accidentally overheard your conversation. I really didn't mean to eavesdrop," Du Xiaonan said, waving her hands frantically.
Su Jin'er glanced at Li Yiqian, who nodded. Then Su Jin'er said to Du Xiaonan, "It's fine. Since we're all in the same dorm and everyone knows about this, we won't hide it from you. But we need to understand one thing: we're facing a ruthless demon who kills without blinking, so we are always in danger. I think Linyuan and Xiaonan, you two should stay out of this."
"No way!"
The two said in unison, which was rare for them.
"Jin'er, how can you forget our vow? Whatever you get involved in, you can't leave me behind," Linyuan pouted.
"And me! We're all in the same dorm; you can't leave me behind either."
Li Yiqian looked at them and said, "Thank you both. I really don't know how to express my gratitude."
Because of this matter, the four of them became very good sisters, and Li Yiqian was no longer a lone wolf. However, they could never have imagined the terrifying things they were about to face.
Tomorrow was Saturday, so there were no classes. The lights-out time was also half an hour later than usual. At that moment, the four people in Room 414 were sitting together discussing how to investigate what happened five years ago.
"Jin'er, there's something I'm not sure if I should say," Linyuan mumbled.
"Is there something you're afraid to say? Go ahead, what is it?"
Hearing Su Jin'er's words gave Linyuan courage. She smiled and said, "You mentioned that we might be facing a ruthless demon, and we're just four weak girls. Why don't you find someone to help us?"
Everyone understood what Linyuan meant. It was common knowledge that the handsome Chu Feifan was running for Student Council Chairman and had a nearly ninety-nine percent chance of winning. Moreover, this handsome guy had a crush on Jin'er. With the help of this future Student Council Chairman, things would become much easier to handle.
Su Jin'er had considered doing this, but she felt that she shouldn't drag more people into this whirlpool. She always had a bad premonition and believed that even if Li Yiqian hadn't pulled her into it, she would still be caught up in it. So when Li Yiqian asked her, she didn't refuse.
"Alright! Tomorrow I'll go find Chu Feifan and Zuo Yi. Maybe it will really help us," she said, as if she had made a significant decision.
"Wow! It's already eleven-thirty without us noticing! Why is the light still on?" Du Xiaonan said while looking at her phone.
"Did you forget? Today is Friday; the lights stay on for an extra half hour. Our school is actually quite considerate," Linyuan said while munching on potato chips.
"Even so, we should go to bed. If the lights aren't going out, let's leave them on! We can think of more ideas," Su Jin'er said.
"Do you think Chu Feifan and the others will agree to help us?" Du Xiaonan suddenly asked.
"With our beautiful Su leading the way, is there anything we can't accomplish? I've seen Jin'er's charm firsthand! If you don't believe me, Xiaonan, let's make a bet!"
"I'm not interested in playing with you," Du Xiaonan said as she crawled onto her bed.
"Hey! Xiaoyuan, aren't you afraid of getting fat? Seriously, it's so late and you're still eating," Su Jin'er remarked as she listened to Linyuan crunching on chips, almost as if it were the sound of bones cracking.
"Want some chips?"
"No way."
"Alright then! If you're not going to eat, get to bed!"
Just as Su Jin'er was dozing off, she suddenly heard a faint sound of crying, a very sorrowful cry.
She rubbed her forehead. Was she too tense lately? Why did it seem like she kept hearing someone crying? To confirm whether it was just her imagination, she held her breath and listened carefully, but the sound was gone. Perhaps she really was just too anxious.
Thinking of this, she closed her eyes with relief, but just as she did, the voice came again, this time more vivid, as if someone were crying right next to her. Her heart began to race.
“Jin'er!”
Just when Su Jin'er wanted to continue sleeping, she suddenly heard someone calling her name. It wasn't like the eerie voice of a ghost from a TV show; it sounded like her classmates calling her, but with an added layer of sadness.
“Jin'er, are you asleep?”
Just as Su Jin'er was about to get up to check, Linyuan suddenly whispered.
“Not yet! Why aren't you asleep either?”
“I was just about to fall asleep when I suddenly heard someone crying. I thought it was my imagination, and just as I was about to sleep again, I heard someone call my name.” Linyuan slowly climbed onto Su Jin'er's bed and burrowed under the covers. “I'm scared!”
“You heard someone call your name?”
Linyuan nodded while huddled under the blanket.
“I heard someone call my name too,” Su Jin'er said nervously. “Could it be that we are both hallucinating?”
“I—I also heard someone call my name!” At that moment, Du Xiaonan chimed in.
Then they noticed Li Yiqian moving and turning over, saying, “I didn't hear anything at all.”
“In our dormitory of four people, three of us heard someone call our names, and only Qian Qian didn't hear anything. Why is that?” Su Jin'er asked.
“I heard it again; it's crying—it's a crying sound,” Du Xiaonan said in terror.
"Shh! Don't speak."
After a while, Su Jin'er said, "Someone is crying, it seems to be coming from the Old Laboratory."
Su Jin'er sat up and put on her clothes; it was already autumn, and the weather was starting to get cold.
"What are you going to do?" Linyuan asked.
"I want to go take a look."
"No way! It might be that thing! It's better not to go."
"I didn't hear anything!" Li Yiqian said, still confused. "Jin'er, I'll go with you; it might be related to my sister's death!"
Li Yiqian also got out of bed.
Seeing that both of them were going, Linyuan said, "Then I'm going too; if we're going to die, let's all die together."
"Then I don't want to stay here alone; I'm scared," Du Xiaonan also got out of bed.
"This is very dangerous; you all shouldn't go."
"More people means more company; I have to go," Linyuan said firmly.
Du Xiaonan nodded resolutely as well.
"Alright then! Does anyone have a flashlight? Bring it; we'll go together."
To prevent power outages, each of them bought a flashlight, which now came in handy. They carefully left the dormitory with their flashlights, unaware of the terrifying things they might encounter outside.
Li Yiqian led them out through the broken window, while Linyuan guided them along a small path to the Old Laboratory.
"Linyuan, how did you know there was a small path here?" Su Jin'er suddenly asked.
"Hehe, remember that day when I overslept and you went ahead to grab a seat? I actually wasn't sleeping; I was really curious about what was strange about the old Old Laboratory. So after you left, I got up to take a look and found this small path."
Su Jin'er shot her a glare, but when she realized she couldn't see her expression, she said, "You're so bold! I told you not to get involved, yet you still did!"
"But you're here now too, aren't you?"
Hearing her words, Su Jin'er didn't know how to respond. Now that they had already gotten involved, it would be difficult to back out.
"Ah—" Du Xiaonan suddenly screamed, and Li Yiqian quickly covered her mouth.
"Don't scream!"
Du Xiaonan widened her eyes in terror and pointed to the left.
The three of them looked in the direction she was pointing and immediately broke into a cold sweat; there was a White Shadow over there.
"Shh! Don't talk. It might just be a piece of clothing. Let's not scare ourselves," Su Jin'er said. Although she said that, how could she not be afraid?
"How could clothing possibly walk towards us?"
They watched as the White Shadow slowly moved closer to them.
"God! She's coming over, what should we do?" Du Xiaonan said, trembling.
"I want to see whether she is a person or a ghost," Li Yiqian suddenly said.
The figure slowly approached, and they finally breathed a sigh of relief; it was none other than the school's prospective Student Council Chairman, Chu Feifan.
"What are you four doing sneaking around here in the middle of the night? I thought you were thieves!" Chu Feifan said.
"We were going to ask you the same thing. Are you out here stargazing at this hour?" Linyuan said, feeling braver now that it was a person and not a ghost.
"Isn't it for the election of Chairman? I'm out here patrolling," a voice suddenly chimed in from the side.
"Ah! A ghost!" Linyuan screamed.
"Please, don't shout! Do you want to wake up the entire school?" Su Jin'er covered her mouth.
"You’re the ghost! It's me," Zuo Yi said from beside them, dressed all in black.
"What are you doing wandering around in black clothes at this hour?" Linyuan asked.
"What business is it of yours?"
"But what are you three doing out here in the middle of the night?" Zuo Yi questioned.
"Uh! We couldn't sleep and came out for a stroll," Linyuan replied with a laugh.
"Alright, stop messing around. We actually wanted to ask for their help. It just so happens we ran into them. But we won't tell you the specifics yet. Three out of four of us in our dorm heard someone calling our names, so we came down to check," Su Jin'er whispered.
"Did you call your names? We didn't hear anything," Zuo Yi replied.
"It's because we found it strange that we wanted to come down and take a look!" Du Xiaonan said.
"We'll accompany you!"
"Okay!"
The six of them walked together towards the Old Laboratory, which was not far from where they were standing. At this moment, the Old Laboratory was completely dark, and even if something were really there, no one would dare to go in at this time!
Chu Feifan walked at the front while Zuo Yi brought up the rear. A few girls held hands in the middle as they slowly moved forward.
Chu Feifan slowly pushed open the large iron door of the Old Laboratory. The door was rusty from years of disuse, leaving a layer of rust on his fingers.
Looking into the pitch-black interior, no one dared to step inside.
"Why are you all so nervous? I was just inside during the day!" Li Yiqian suddenly whispered.
Her sudden comment made everyone gasp in surprise.
Li Yiqian was the first to step through the iron door. As soon as she entered, she felt a chill rush from her feet to the top of her head, causing her to shiver.
