Linyuan and Du Xiaonan covered their mouths and laughed secretly, while Xu Lingling glared at them in anger. 0

"Hmph! You don't know, do you? Five years ago, on this very table, the body of a girl named Xiaoqing was placed here," Xu Lingling said angrily, raising her voice to attract the attention of those nearby. 0

Hearing her words, Linyuan, who was trying hard to shovel food into her mouth, spat out all her rice and began to cough violently. 0

"What nonsense are you talking about? We're all eating here!" Du Xiaonan exclaimed, wide-eyed with anger. 0

"If you don't believe me, you can ask around! Otherwise, why would so many people have nowhere to sit while leaving such a large space empty? Do you think it's reserved just for you?" After saying this, she deliberately glanced at Su Jin'er. 0

"That was five years ago; the table might have been replaced long ago. Besides, even if something did happen here, so what?" Su Jin'er replied with a smile. "If you're bothered by it, you can sit somewhere else." 0

She didn't particularly dislike Xu Lingling, but seeing her so arrogant and dismissive was a bit hard to tolerate. 0

Xu Lingling looked at Chu Feifan, who was seriously eating his meal, and angrily sat down across from him. "Feifan is here; I'm not afraid!" 0

Su Jin'er silently smiled. What did an event from five years ago have to do with her? She was just an ordinary student here to study. Even if something had happened five years ago, it wouldn't concern her; why should she get involved in such matters? 0

The afternoon class was Dissection. She wondered if they would go to the lab. This was Linyuan's favorite class, and now Linyuan was excitedly bouncing around the dormitory! 0

"Please stop spinning around! You've made me dizzy!" Jin'er said with a frown. 0

"Do you think we can see people's internal organs in class? Just thinking about it makes me so excited! I hope I can take a knife and make a few cuts." 0

"What are you thinking all day? I think you're more suited to be a doctor; I suggest you become a forensic expert instead," Su Jin'er said, rubbing her forehead in frustration. 0

"I originally wanted to be a forensic expert! So what? Jin'er, do you want to join me?" Linyuan bent over and leaned closer to Su Jin'er. 0

"No way!" 0

"By the way, Jin'er, don't you find it strange?" Linyuan sat down next to Su Jin'er with a serious expression. 0

"What’s so strange?" Su Jin'er turned the page of her book, her fingers slender and long, with beautifully trimmed nails. 0

"It's about Xiaoqing's death five years ago! Have you forgotten? When Ouyang Chunxiao told us about it that day, he said it was a secret and specifically warned us not to talk about it! Now it seems like everyone in school knows, except for us." 0

Su Jin'er lowered her head, her long black hair covering her face, making it impossible to see her expression. After a while, she lifted her head and looked at Linyuan, saying, "Xiaoyuan, actually, ever since Military Training started, I've had a bad feeling. I always felt something was off, but I couldn't pinpoint what it was. It felt like something was about to happen." 0

"How could you feel that way? Did the stories they told us affect you?" Hearing her say this, Linyuan began to worry. 0

"Actually, when I was little, I often went to the countryside and listened to the elders tell me those seemingly real ghost stories. At that age, I believed there were ghosts in this world. Although I was scared, I still loved hearing those old tales. Do you remember my childhood friend Qiangzi?" 0

"Yeah, I remember! What about him?" 0

"Qiangzi's grandmother once told me that when he was little, he got scared by a ghost." 0

"What? Could there really be ghosts in this world?" 0

Su Jin'er shook her head and said, "I don't know. I remember Qiangzi was only one year old at the time. His grandmother was holding him when they passed by a graveyard. Suddenly, he started crying uncontrollably, and it wasn't a normal cry; it sounded like someone was choking him. Later, a shaman looked at him and said he encountered a ghost and was choked. It was already good that he survived." 0

"Do you believe that?" 0

Su Jin'er shook her head again and said, "I don't know. At first, I believed it very much, but as I grew older, I gradually stopped believing in those supernatural tales. So I think what happened five years ago was man-made and has nothing to do with us. Let's not get involved, okay?" 0

After hearing her words, Linyuan understood that whether or not it was related to what happened five years ago didn't concern them. What Su Jin'er worried about was that their curiosity might pull them into something they shouldn't be involved in. 0

"Okay then, let's just focus on our studies." 0

Su Jin'er wasn't timid; she loved reasoning and solving cases. However, she wasn't a police officer and had a strong feeling that this matter wasn't as simple as it appeared on the surface. 0

The afternoon classes passed quietly, and Linyuan no longer felt the need to investigate every strange occurrence as she used to. She quietly watched the teacher explain human anatomy to them. Although they didn't actually perform any dissections, she still looked excitedly at the body on the table—was there really nothing left after death? Or as some say, did the spirit linger in this world unwilling to leave and become what people refer to as ghosts? This question had no answer. 0

After class, Linyuan became excited again: "The smell of formalin is really strong! But the body is preserved quite well; I secretly touched its skin! It's still very elastic!" 0

"I can't believe you. Did you wear gloves while touching it?" 0

"Let me tell you a secret, I deliberately took off my gloves to touch it." 0

"I knew it!" 0

"I almost threw up. Seriously, I don't like Dissection class," Du Xiaonan said with a pale face, as if she hadn't recovered from the earlier experiment, her small face particularly pale. 0

At that moment, Li Yiqian squeezed over from the side and smiled, "How's everyone? Were you scared?" 0

"I wasn't scared, just a bit grossed out," Du Xiaonan replied. 0

"How can it be gross? It's not much different from when they were alive!" Li Yiqian continued to smile. 0

"Everyone has different feelings," Su Jin'er said with a smile. 0

Li Yiqian shrugged and changed the topic, saying, "By the way, I need to find Teacher Zhang, so I'm leaving now!" 0

After saying that, she waved goodbye and left. 0

It was already late autumn; the days were getting shorter and the sky was overcast. The three of them went to the cafeteria for dinner before returning to their dormitory. 0

Now it was eight o'clock in the evening, and it was completely dark outside. Su Jin'er leaned against her bed, focused on reading Sherlock Holmes, occasionally turning a page. Li Yiqian had not returned yet, while Linyuan and Du Xiaonan lay on their respective beds looking at their phones. It seemed like the wind had started blowing outside, making a "pattering" sound against the window. 0

"Why hasn't Yiqian come back yet? It's already past eight!" Du Xiaonan suddenly raised her head and said. 0

"Maybe she's still busy!" Just as Su Jin'er finished speaking, there was a rhythmic knock at the door. 0

"Speak of the devil, and he shall appear!" Linyuan jumped down from the upper bunk and ran to the door to open it. 0

However, when she opened the door, she stood there without any intention of letting the person outside in, her back appearing unnaturally stiff. 0

"Xiaoyuan, why aren't you letting her in?" After a while without hearing any footsteps, Su Jin'er asked curiously. 0

But the room was silent, with no one answering, only the faint sound of Du Xiaonan pressing buttons on her phone. 0

"Xiaoyuan—" Jin'er stood up and walked toward the door. 0

"There’s no one outside," Linyuan finally spoke, but her voice was trembling. 0

Through Linyuan's shoulder, Su Jin'er saw that the corridor was empty; even the motion-sensor lights hadn't turned on. It seemed like there really hadn't been any footsteps coming up just now! 0

"Maybe it was just the wind!" she said to comfort herself. 0

"But the wind shouldn't have a rhythm!" At that moment, Du Xiaonan also got off the bed. 0

Just then, footsteps could be heard coming from the stairs, sounding stealthy as if someone were trying not to be noticed. 0

"Who could that be?" 0

Although Su Jin'er claimed not to believe in demons, in such a quiet and empty night, anyone would feel scared by such an occurrence! 0

Despite her fear, she took a step forward and said, "Let me take a look!" 0

The slow footsteps reached the fourth floor. The three of them stood rigidly by the door, waiting for the owner of those footsteps to appear. 0

The person first stepped out with one foot, which was clad in white sneakers, as if testing something. However, after stepping out, they hesitated to bring out the other foot. Su Jin'er and the others were so tense that they nearly stopped breathing. 0

Finally, the owner of the feet appeared, and after seeing her face, the three of them slowly let out a sigh of relief. 0

"Hey! Li Yiqian, are you trying to scare us to death? Why did you knock on the door and then leave, only to come upstairs with those kinds of footsteps?" Linyuan exclaimed. 0

Li Yiqian looked at them in confusion and said, "I just came up now! Besides, you three blocked the door so tightly, how could I knock?" 0

The group entered the room one after another, each sitting on their own bed. Then Linyuan said, "So why did you stick out one foot and then just stop? It took you so long to come out that you scared us half to death!" 0

"I was actually going to come in! But then I suddenly saw some writing on the wall, so I stopped to take a look! Who knew you guys would happen to see my foot at the door!" 0

"Come on! We heard someone knock and thought it was you coming back, so we came to check. When we opened the door, there was no one outside. Were you playing a prank?" Linyuan shouted back. 0

"I already said I just got back." 0

"Did you see anyone else when you were coming upstairs?" Du Xiaonan asked with wide eyes. 0

"No! It was just me!" 0

Seeing the three of them fall silent one after another, Li Yiqian asked in confusion, "Did you really hear someone knocking on the door just now?" 0
