"I had the same dream as you."
Although she was surprised to hear that someone else had the same dream, she calmly spoke up.
"How is that possible?"
Su Jin'er shook her head. "This forest gives me an indescribable feeling, it's strange. I always have this inexplicable sense of palpitations. Under normal circumstances, I shouldn't have been able to fall asleep, but I did, and I had such a strange dream."
Chu Feifan looked at her beautiful face and said, "We've been wandering around here all day; it's only natural to feel tired and fall asleep."
"I wonder if the others dreamed of anything," Su Jin'er said, leaning against a tree, feeling somewhat fatigued. The tension and terror from the dream still lingered in her mind.
"Let's not mention this dream to anyone else; after all, it concerns his life."
"I think so too."
By the time everyone woke up, the sky was no longer so dim, and the temperature around them seemed to have risen a bit.
After resting, everyone seemed even more listless. Each person silently packed their belongings, lost in their own thoughts. Even Xu Lingling, who had been in fear, furrowed her brows and followed Chu Feifan closely but no longer clung to him like before.
Perhaps because it was daylight, they quickly found their way back. Along the way, everyone was quiet, heads down as they followed Chu Feifan and Zuo Yi. When they reached the foot of the mountain, they happened to encounter their instructor and teacher who had come looking for them. Although they felt resentful about why the teacher hadn't searched for them last night and only came now, they merely cursed under their breath before returning to school.
Because of what happened to them, the school had to abandon plans for training in the mountains. It was already somewhat unreasonable; many students refused to participate, and with this incident, no one went at all.
Before they knew it, November arrived. The trees at school began shedding their leaves, and the pile of fallen leaves on the ground grew higher and higher. No matter how much the school staff cleaned up, it seemed never-ending.
Su Jin'er was walking to class with her Pathology textbook in hand. The early autumn morning air was filled with a light mist. Linyuan, being lazy, asked Su Jin'er to reserve a seat for her so she could sleep a few more minutes. This had become a common occurrence since they entered medical school. Every time, Su Jin'er would shake her head and smile wryly, but she would still save the seat. Su Jin'er just wanted to study hard and become an excellent doctor like her parents. She didn't want to be like Linyuan, rushing into class with breakfast and textbooks under everyone's gaze; she preferred not to draw attention.
Since the Military Training, they had become friends with Chu Feifan and Zuo Yi.
"Hi, good morning!"
"Morning!"
Su Jin'er greeted them with a smile. Chu Feifan and Zuo Yi were childhood friends, just like Su Jin'er and Linyuan.
"Linyuan is sleeping again!" Zuo Yi asked with a laugh.
At first, Su Jin'er thought Zuo Yi was like Chu Feifan, the cool and aloof type. However, as they got to know each other better, she realized he was actually quite lively and loved to laugh, giving off a sunny vibe. Naturally, the two of them became the princes charming in the eyes of the schoolgirls. But everyone was no longer in middle school; they wouldn't scream in excitement upon seeing handsome boys.
"Yeah!"
They flanked Su Jin'er on either side, which made her feel uncomfortable, but she didn't say anything and just kept her head down as they walked. Zuo Yi crossed his arms behind his head and whistled as he walked.
"Feifan!"
A clear voice rang out from behind them; everyone knew who it was without looking.
"Your pure little princess is here!"
Zuo Yi said as usual, clearly not fond of Xu Lingling.
Chu Feifan glanced at Su Jin'er and glared at Zuo Yi, saying, "Hey, don't say that carelessly."
"Hmph!"
Zuo Yi continued to whistle as he walked ahead.
Suddenly, Su Jin'er trembled, her face slightly pale.
"Jin'er, what's wrong? Are you cold?"
Zuo Yi noticed Su Jin'er's unusual behavior and asked with concern.
"It's not..." Su Jin'er struggled to say. It wasn't because she was cold, but because of fear; the sudden wave of terror made her tremble so much that she could hardly speak.
She turned her head and saw Xu Lingling rushing over, her brows tightly furrowed and her face filled with fear.
"Xu Mengguang... is dead."
Upon hearing Xu Lingling's words, Su Jin'er nearly fainted.
"How did he die?"
"I don't know. It seems like a suicide. It was very horrific; his hands were tightly gripping his own neck, and even after he died, it was difficult to pull his hands away."
"Where is he now?"
"In the old Old Laboratory."
Old Laboratory Building?
How could it be there? Isn't that place already sealed off for a long time? Ever since she came to the medical school, she had heard some rumors about the Old Laboratory Building, all of which were ghost stories. Su Jin'er did not believe in ghosts or souls, so she had always treated them as mere tales.
The old Old Laboratory was on the other side of the school. Now they were using the newly built teaching building, Old Laboratory, and dormitories, which meant there was a second campus. The Old Laboratory Building was in the first campus, and getting there required passing through an iron gate. The Old Laboratory Building was now used by graduate students and some teachers, while freshmen were not allowed to enter. She wondered how Xu Mengguang ended up there and how he lost his life.
As they got closer to the Old Laboratory, Su Jin'er suddenly felt a strong sense of palpitations, even stronger than when she was in the mountains during Military Training. Darkness enveloped her, and a suffocating feeling pressed down on her head.
“Jin'er, what's wrong?”
Chu Feifan asked with concern.
Slowly, her vision returned, but the intense palpitations remained. She shook her head with a pale face.
“If you’re not feeling well, don’t push yourself,” Chu Feifan said somewhat angrily. He didn’t like seeing her act strong as if she feared nothing; he actually wished she would be scared and hide in his arms.
“I’m really fine.”
She pushed away his arm that was supporting her and walked straight toward the Old Laboratory.
Watching this scene, Xu Lingling felt a flash of malice; she hated the woman in front of her.
Chu Feifan looked at her departing figure with a hint of disappointment. Although he knew it wasn't the right time for romance, he still couldn't resist her allure. Just a faint smile from her was enough to make him happy for several days.
“Hey, she's already gone. What are you still doing here?” Zuo Yi's voice suddenly rang in his ear.
He shot him an annoyed glance and stepped into the Old Laboratory. Zuo Yi shook his head and sighed behind him.
The Old Laboratory was unusually dim, with only a sliver of light spilling in from the open doorway, illuminating just a small area at the entrance. The wooden stairs creaked underfoot, not severely decayed but still making noise as the four of them carefully ascended.
"Why is it so quiet here? Didn't the police come after someone died?" Chu Feifan asked Xu Lingling, frowning.
"I was the first to find it. After seeing it, I didn't know what to do. I was too scared to call the police, so I could only think of telling you," Xu Lingling said, feigning innocence.
"Feifan isn't a police officer. What good does it do to tell him? Besides, if it's true, we should inform the school first!" Zuo Yi said impatiently, clearly disliking Xu Lingling.
"I was really scared at that time, so I..."
"You can't blame her; girls are naturally more frightened by these things," Su Jin'er interjected, her fear causing her to say hurtful things. "Where is his body?"
Perhaps encouraged by Su Jin'er's defense, Xu Lingling obediently replied, "On the third floor."
Under Xu Lingling's guidance, they arrived at a room on the third floor. The space was small and cluttered with numerous experimental tools, leaving little room to move around. They did not see the body of Xu Mengguang that Xu Lingling had mentioned.
"How is this possible? I clearly saw him lying here with his hands around his neck. Where could he be?" Xu Lingling exclaimed, staring at the empty floor that bore no signs of a body—only a thin layer of dust.
"Are you messing with us?"
Zuo Yi said irritably; this morning's class had been his favorite, and now it was ruined because of this woman. How could he not be angry?
"No, she isn't lying to us; something is definitely wrong here."
Chu Feifan pointed to a spot on the floor where there was a faint footprint that would be hard to notice without close inspection.
"There's a bloodstain here that hasn't dried," Su Jin'er said as she gently dipped her pale finger into it. A bright red appeared on her fingertip. She brought it to her nose and sniffed, saying, "It's not blood; it's ketchup."
She found it somewhat amusing that she had become paranoid. The feeling of anxiety in her heart had disappeared at some point, but she still felt uneasy in this Old Laboratory. She wanted to escape, yet there was something inexplicably drawing her here.
"Let's go! The air here makes me feel uncomfortable." The oppressive atmosphere was becoming increasingly unbearable for her.
Seeing her pale face, Chu Feifan said, "If you're not feeling well, go to the infirmary. Don't push yourself."
"I'm not pushing myself; the air here is stifling, and I can hardly breathe."
"Alright then, let's leave!"
Just as they were about to head down the stairs, a faint sound of footsteps came from the end of the corridor, clearly approaching them. Xu Lingling shrank closer to Chu Feifan in fear.
In the dim Old Laboratory, the footsteps sounded particularly eerie. They stood stiffly at the stairway, no one daring to turn around to see who or what was making the noise.
Su Jin'er didn't believe in ghosts, especially with Chu Feifan and the others around her, but she wasn't particularly brave either. At that moment, however, she felt a strong urge to look back.
Finally, she slowly turned her head, and just as she did, the footsteps stopped. Then she saw a familiar figure.
"Oh, it's you! You scared us." Zuo Yi also recognized the owner of the footsteps.
"Yeah, I was doing experiments in that lab and suddenly heard someone talking, so I thought I’d come out and take a look."
