“Xuan, let’s go tell your parents this good news. They will definitely be very happy,” Li Ping said sincerely.
“I’m not going. He brought me into this world, and I owe him that, so I’m willing to donate blood to him and cover all his medical expenses,” Chen Haoxuan replied calmly.
“Xuan, why do you have to be so stubborn? No matter what, they are still your parents. Even though they treated you poorly before, you should at least give them a chance to make amends, right? If they don’t change, I promise I won’t persuade you anymore,” Li Ping urged, holding Chen Haoxuan's hand.
“Aunt, everyone has their own freedom. Since I’ve already made my decision, please don’t force me to see them. If you want to see them, go ahead! I’m going to find the doctor to draw blood,” Chen Haoxuan said lightly to Li Ping.
Watching Chen Haoxuan walk away with a hint of sorrow in his demeanor, Li Ping sighed, “Oh dear, poor child.”
Li Ping carried a bag of fruit and held Chen Haoxuan's blood test report as she headed to the hospital room where Chen Zhenghao was staying. Chen Zhenghao was heavily in debt, so he was in a regular ward with six other patients.
When Li Ping arrived, Li Xin stood up and smiled at her, saying, “Sister Ping, you’re here! Please sit.” Li Xin offered her chair to Li Ping. She had changed a lot; she now understood who the good people were and who the bad ones were. Those friends who used to be close to her had cut ties when they saw her downfall, while Li Ping, whom she had always considered an enemy, had helped her during her difficult times. Now she felt genuine gratitude towards Li Ping.
“Sister Ping, why do you always bring so much fruit every time? It’s such a waste!” Chen Zhenghao said from his bed.
“A big bag of fruit only costs a few dollars; it’s not expensive,” Li Ping replied with a smile.
Li Ping was not being polite; she sat by Chen Zhenghao's bedside and placed the fruit on the cabinet next to the bed. Then she pulled out a piece of paper and waved it in front of Chen Zhenghao with a mysterious smile. “Take a look at what this is.”
Chen Zhenghao took the paper from Li Ping. As he read its contents, despite having no strength even to sit up before, he suddenly felt a surge of mysterious energy that allowed him to sit up straight. His expression was one of surprise as he trembled and said, “He… he is my son.”
“Zhenghao, what do you mean son? Is Haorong back?” Li Xin exclaimed excitedly. Chen Haorong had always been the pillar of their family; if he returned, they wouldn’t have to worry about medical expenses anymore.
Hearing Li Xin mention Chen Haorong, Chen Zhenghao felt a surge of anger. If it weren't for Chen Haorong, he wouldn't be in this situation. She said angrily, "Don't bring up that ungrateful child again. Just hearing his name makes me furious. Look at this!" Chen Zhenghao handed the paper that Li Ping had just given him to Li Xin.
After reading the contents of the paper, Li Xin's eyes widened in surprise. She exclaimed, "Zhenghao, that little brat?? No, no, it's Haoxuan! Haoxuan is your biological son, not someone else's; he's yours."
"There are very few people with the same blood type as mine; it's like finding a needle in a haystack. But why doesn't he look like me?" Chen Zhenghao said, troubled. He had previously concluded that Chen Haoxuan was not his biological son based on his appearance.
Li Ping interjected, "Children don't necessarily look like their parents; they can resemble grandparents, uncles... anyone who has a blood relation to them."
Chen Zhenghao seemed to have an epiphany. He suddenly slapped his thigh, and the sudden movement caused him excruciating pain in his abdomen as if he had been stabbed. He was suffering from Acute Appendicitis, and any movement made it worse. "Li Xin, hurry back and get the photo album from my wooden box," he said to Li Xin through gritted teeth.
Li Ping and Li Xin took the bus back home. On the way, Li Ping informed Li Xin that Chen Haoxuan had already given blood for Chen Zhenghao's surgery preparations. After hearing this, Li Xin felt guilty. They had treated Chen Haoxuan so poorly and even considered harming him. While it was understandable for Chen Haoxuan to feel angry with them, he still saved them—not only covering all medical expenses but also donating his own blood for her husband. Li Xin felt so guilty that she wanted to kneel before Chen Haoxuan and apologize.
Since they sold their house, their belongings were temporarily stored at Li Ping's home. Upon arriving at Li Ping's house, she found the wooden box that Chen Zhenghao mentioned. She opened it and discovered a thick photo album inside. Out of curiosity, she began flipping through it. The first page contained black-and-white photos of several elderly people she didn't recognize. As she turned page after page, when she reached the last page, she gasped in surprise but was preempted by Li Ping behind her.
Li Ping exclaimed, "This person looks like Chen Haoxuan!"
Li Xin replied, "Yes! It's like they were carved from the same mold. I think this must be Zhenghao's relative."
Eager to share this good news with Chen Zhenghao quickly, Li Ping went to find Jiang Dong and asked him to send someone on a motorcycle to take them to the People's Hospital in Pingyuan County. As Chen Haoxuan's mother-in-law, Jiang Dong naturally obliged and sent two people to escort them to Pingyuan County.
Upon returning to the People's Hospital in Pingyuan County, Li Xin immediately opened the last page of the photo album and handed it to Chen Zhenghao. "Look at who this is!"
"She is my mother! So Haoxuan looks like my mother instead of us as a couple. Oh? We misunderstood him," Chen Zhenghao sighed in realization.
"That's no wonder Xuan is so handsome; he looks just like your mother," Li Ping said happily.
"I'm really useless; I can't even remember what my mom looks like. If I had remembered her face, if I had the decency to look at their photos from when they were alive, this wouldn't have happened. I owe Haoxuan an apology; it's my fault that he ended up alone and suffered since childhood..." Chen Zhenghao said as he couldn't help but cry, tears filled with guilt, shame, and regret.
"Do you still want to acknowledge him?" Li Ping asked.
"He's my son; of course, I want to acknowledge him! But after how I treated him before, he won't forgive me," Chen Zhenghao replied dejectedly.
"Whether he can forgive you depends on your sincerity. By the way, I forgot to tell you that Xuan is currently at the hospital donating blood for you. He has also paid all your medical expenses. If you want to acknowledge him, you should get better quickly and go find him in person!" Li Ping said.
