The galaxy stretched across the sky, its stars shining brightly, while below, the jungle was engulfed in darkness.
After traveling for nearly a hundred miles and approaching Hai Time, Li Hong stopped and glanced at the nearly unconscious Akateke in his arms. He gestured with one hand towards Ling Yi Zi, who was not far away.
They had arrived at their destination. Amidst the mountains, a large tower-like structure loomed high above the jungle. It had at least nine tiers, each very tall, displaying a flawless pyramid shape from the side. The top level featured a grand flat-roofed temple adorned with countless columns. All buildings in this Great City faced this magnificent temple. Under the dim starlight, four wide, pristine stone paths led from the east, west, south, and north towards the temple.
This layout proved that in the eyes of the Indigenous People, this temple was the center of the world.
Deep beneath the temple, there were strong fluctuations of Ethereal Energy, and it was not just that. Li Hong couldn't help but furrow his brow as he instinctively touched Little Fei, who was sleeping soundly in his arms.
Landing gently, he placed Akateke on the ground and lightly patted his back to infuse him with a gentle wave of Awareness. Akateke awoke from his stupor and immediately understood upon seeing Li Hong. He stretched his arms and quickly climbed up a nearby large tree, gazing into the distance.
Though the jungle was dark and the starlight dim, as a mortal, Akateke could still easily see the massive Great Deity temple several miles away.
The temple was brightly lit, with many people moving about inside and outside. Dozens of small white figures were continuously bowing at the entrance—these were the temple's priests. Groups of armed Indigenous People warriors patrolled everywhere, maintaining strict vigilance. Every so often, a bound Indigenous Person would be brought up the high steps and pushed deep into the temple.
Seeing this scene suddenly stirred Akateke. He jumped down to the ground, gesturing excitedly to Li Hong in hushed tones. When he noticed that Li Hong and Ling Yi Zi did not understand him, he scratched his head in frustration, squatted down, and began to draw haphazardly on the ground. Despite the darkness, Akateke relied solely on his instincts to sketch, but Li Hong and Ling Yi Zi still understood his meaning.
The priests of the Evil God Temple were performing sacrifices using living people; there might be his kin inside. They had to find a way to stop it and rescue them!
"Alright! We will go rescue them; you stay here!"
Li Hong and Ling Yi Zi flew towards the temple.
As they got closer and were about to fly out of the jungle, suddenly Ling Yi Zi came to an abrupt stop. Li Hong was taken aback when he heard Ling Yi Zi communicate telepathically: "Stop! Do you feel that? This place has Restrictions. If we fly directly in, we will definitely trigger them; we need to conceal our spiritual energy and blend in."
Li Hong quickly extended his Divine Consciousness to sense carefully. Indeed, Ling Yi Zi was right; the high walls surrounding the Great City appeared to be newly built, but beneath the walls were remnants of old, low walls. This circle of low walls clearly exhibited fluctuations of a force field.
As Divine Consciousness probed into the Great City, it discovered that all the buildings were relatively new, with the oldest not exceeding a hundred years. However, the ground throughout the Great City was filled with fluctuations of force fields, and there were many remnants of ancient stone piles and low walls. This indicated that the Indigenous People who worshipped the Evil God had rebuilt a new city on some ruins.
Moreover, the massive fluctuations of Ethereal Energy within the Yin Spirit Eye deep in the temple and that object below revealed the truth.
The Indigenous People here were quite clever; they were evidently utilizing the temple left by the Ancient God, or perhaps they originally worshipped the Ancient God who constructed this temple. Furthermore, the Ancient God had left behind a terrifying guardian.
This terrifying guardian was precisely the Evil God that these Indigenous People currently worshipped.
A fierce battle was inevitable. Li Hong was not afraid; instead, he felt a long-lost surge of excitement rising within him. Just as he intended to discuss a way to sneak in with Ling Yi Zi, he saw Ling Yi Zi start stripping without a word. In an instant, she was completely naked, turned her back, and began smearing mud from the ground all over herself.
Li Hong was taken aback. "What are you doing?"
Ling Yi Zi communicated through thought: "Disguising as Indigenous People; we’ll blend in first."
"This..." The method was indeed somewhat embarrassing, but Li Hong had to admit that it was truly the best way to avoid alarming the Indigenous People and that entity. Reluctantly, he followed Ling Yi Zi's example and stripped off all his clothes, smearing mud all over his bare body and face until he resembled a black mud figure. He then tied several large branches and leaves around his waist to cover his private parts.
The two exchanged glances, and Li Hong couldn't help but burst into laughter, almost revealing their identities.
However, Ling Yi Zi remained serious and said calmly, "Let's go."
In Evil God City, there were city gates on all four sides of the walls. It was nearly midnight, yet the gates remained wide open, with many winding torches leading into the jungle. Nearby, Indigenous People tribes were continuously escorting captives here.
Before long, Li Hong and Ling Yi Zi encountered a group of Indigenous People escorting captives. They created a bit of chaos. When the Indigenous People escorting the captives reorganized their group, they discovered not only were there many captives but there were actually two more than before!
The Indigenous People of the Prisoner Escort counted and recounted, puzzled and confused. The leader of the Indigenous People at the front grew impatient, muttering a few words. Soon, someone came over to bind the hands and feet of Li Hong and Ling Yi Zi, tying them together with all the other captives. The long line continued toward the city gate.
Upon passing through the city gate, the group did not head toward the temple but crossed the Street and entered a walled building to the southeast.
Under the light of torches, even Li Hong, who was usually bold, couldn't help but be startled.
The entire building was a prison. Tall walls surrounded it, with wooden Watchtowers on all sides. The central ground was completely excavated and filled with dirty water, creating a deep water prison sunk underground. Countless Indigenous People, abducted from various places, were crammed into the filthy water, which was covered with maggots and excrement. Many rotting corpses floated in the dirty water. The living Indigenous People had to stand on tiptoe just to keep their noses above the surface.
The firelight shone through the thick wooden bars covering the water prison onto the faces of the Indigenous People, each wearing an expression of numb despair. They were so exhausted that they would slip silently into the water and drown. Before long, another half-submerged corpse appeared in the filthy water.
The entire water prison was like Hell on Earth; the Indigenous People were treated like livestock, their lives controlled by their kind who were in power above them. Every little while, one person would be pulled from the water, tightly bound, and escorted to the temple.
One corner of the wooden bars covering the water prison was lifted. The captured Indigenous People were tied together with a long rope. Two guards stood on either side of the bars; for every captive they untied, they pushed another into the water prison. As they pushed half of them down, without warning, one of the Watchtowers suddenly tilted quickly. The sentinels above screamed in fright as they fell down like dumplings boiling in water.
The Indigenous People guards all rushed over to rescue them. No one noticed that at that moment, two captives at the end of the line had vanished.
In the next moment, two tall priests dressed in White Robes silently entered the brightly lit hall of the temple.
The hall was filled with priests—no fewer than three to five hundred—crawling on the ground and continuously bowing in worship while chanting a long Strange tune. A long Red Carpet led from the entrance to the center of the hall, where there was a square Stone-Walled Well about ten feet wide. Strange black gas rose from its opening, carrying a strong stench of decay and Blood Stench.
Every little while, a blindfolded captive would be brought before the well by fully armed Native Soldiers. Two priests would step forward to pour a strange-smelling black ointment over the captive's body while loudly singing that Strange tune before forcefully pushing them down.
The Indigenous People captive who fell into the well let out a long wail that faded as it went down until it abruptly stopped as if cut off at their throat. It seemed that misfortune had befallen them.
The priests among the Indigenous People sang even louder at this point, raising their hands and swaying their bodies excitedly. This situation continued until another captive was brought in.
It seems the main character is right at the well's mouth. Li Hong lifted the white hood that covered most of her face and looked at Ling Yi Zi beside her.
Ling Yi Zi pointed at the center of the well and made a downward gesture towards Li Hong.
The two of them acted simultaneously, leaping into the air and heading straight for the well in the center of the hall. With a wave of their hands, about ten priest warriors near the well fell into it, and then they both jumped in after them.
The surrounding priests suddenly felt the lights dim, and a strange wind swept across their faces. When they focused their eyes, they all shouted in unison; the high priests near the well had mysteriously vanished!
The ritual had to be halted, and the priests were all terrified. Someone immediately shouted and ran towards the palace.
********
Beneath the temple was the Bottomless Abyss.
The area above was only about ten feet square, but as they descended, the diameter widened. After reaching a hundred feet down, they found themselves in a massive cave. The cave was bottomless, with swirling black mist rising from below, accompanied by strange muffled roars and flickering red lights coming from an unknown source, making it not entirely dark.
A sense of extreme danger surged within Li Hong; her hair stood on end as she formed a sword gesture with her hands. Yue Que emerged from her forehead, and a brilliant golden light resembling a dragon spiraled around her.
At the same time, Ling Yi Zi summoned Ask the Way, with the divine weapon's bright blade reflecting on Ling Yi Zi, making her appear cold and solemn like snow.
"Be on guard!" Ling Yi Zi shouted.
Suddenly, a strong stench filled the air, suffocatingly foul. The screaming priests bizarrely vanished into a vortex of foul odor. In the darkness, something began to rise...
Li Hong suddenly shivered. Indeed, it was an ancient Primordial Giant.
In the abyss below, whose depth is unknown, a creature slowly raised its enormous head. Two giant red eyes emitted intermittent beams of red light. At their longest, the beams stretched for hundreds of feet, piercing through the dense black mist at the bottom of the abyss like lightning, illuminating everything in their path. The creature itself was so large that it was almost incomprehensible.
Its body was so vast that it seemed to fill the entire abyss. The long, twisted horns on its head resembled towering trees, reminding Li Hong of the great Fusang Immortal Wood in the sea of Temple City. Between the horns were clusters of tall, mountain-like black spikes, and beneath these "mountains," the creature's eerie red eyes flickered with electric light. Its gaping mouth was impossible to gauge in size, but with each breath it took, it created whirlwinds of air, suggesting that this mouth must be immense, capable of effortlessly swallowing Indigenous People whole.
This creature, coiled within the abyss, was a mountain in its own right.
It sensed the presence of an enemy approaching and began to rise higher from the depths. After a moment, it suddenly halted.
Li Hong immediately felt something pressing down on him with the weight of a mountain.
He couldn't tell what it was, but the gusts of air generated by its movement were suffocating. Helplessly, Li Hong was forcefully pushed downward, right into the gaping maw of the monster below.
